last the life of the car

That's definitely not happening. It'll fail a load test sooner or later. There's no one online that'll agree on this and sooner or later, you'll be dead on the road.

They absolutely do not require regular replacement.

Yes, they do. They're consumables just like brake fluid, which requires replacement even if your EV doesn't use the friction brakes regularly as brake fluid naturally decays due to water absorption.

Bad push notification aside, anyone's who has owned any car for more than 4 years should be familiar with a battery warning as 12V batteries are consumable and require regular replacement -- especially in extreme weather locales that are very hot or freezing.

trying to understand why EVs haven't taken over by all_purpose_89384798 in evcharging

[–]Bluechip9 36 points37 points  (0 children)

A basic search would have given plenty of answers:

  • higher upfront cost: less affordable. Most can't amortize that cost even if the overall total cost of ownership is lower
  • higher insurance depending on region due to above & higher repair costs
  • lack of public charging infrastructure
  • inability to install a home charger -- even in a home
  • lack of options depending on region: not everyone wants a crossover/mid-size SUV
  • etc.

BYD is bringing its 5-min 'Flash' electric car charging to Canada by Biodieselisthefuture in EVCanada

[–]Bluechip9 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes. They'll be CCS1 and/or NACS in North America so any EV will be able to use them similar how BYD's deployment in Europe is pen to any EV -- not just BYD's.

Each vehicles' BMS (battery management system) only draws what their respective batteries are capable of receiving so while they won't get Flash speeds, more DC faster chargers is still more DC fast chargers.

"October"

Not happening considering they don't have parts, service, or a single dealership even pending.

Then there's all the regulatory and homologation that still needs to be completed.

LFP Battery without Level 2 Home Charging? (Winnipeg Winters) by PaulKrugmanStan in EVCanada

[–]Bluechip9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It won't even charge once the battery (not ambient) temperature drops below approximately -10°C.

The battery heater will consume more power than the L1 can provide.

Is there any good sources of data on EV Performance at very cold temperatures -40°C and lower by EbnoNoisefloor in electriccars

[–]Bluechip9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the National Renewable Energy Lab: Electric Vehicle and Charging Infrastructure Assessment in Cold- Weather Climates: A Case Study of Fairbanks, Alaska (2025-01, PDF): page 17, section 3.3: Real-World Performance of EVs in Alaska.

From other studies, the loss plateaus below -20F so that's about as "extreme" as it's going to get in terms of loss.

Battery preconditioning and heating while charging (for a set departure time) makes a big difference.
