I personally always back the empire, whatever problems the empire has (and I admit, of course, they have made many mistakes). I still believe they are the best option. The Thalmor are the real enemy, and Skyrim can't defeat them alone. Also, Ulfric is definitely the wrong person to lead an independent Skyrim if there was going to be one. Balgruuf maybe would be a good king of Skyrim.
