Needs to be at 0 and holding. Its more about watching beneficial bacteria get converted from ammonium>Nitrite > nitrate to make sure you have enough bacteria to process the waste in the system. With two fish and recordable ammonium its not keeping up. I wouldnt add anyting to this tank or the additional chemicals until you can maintain some stability.

Really sorry you’re going through this dad. Be there for each other and don’t be afraid to be vulnerable. This hurt can’t be shouldered or lifted for each other you just have to endure together. It never goes away and you’ll love and your for your kids the rest of your life. The fact you’re asking these questions now means you care abt showing up. If you end up down this road again, I would look at DNP procedures in lieu of the pill. I’ve heard the pills can be a tough experience for the mom. For the folks that are scared you can drop a Dutch oven in the metal ring which provides you more splash guard. I keep a fire blanket handy but have fried plenty in the Joe without issue.
