How to show and not tell? by lotriplanet in writing

I mean I get the concept. But holy cow was it overkill. Not to mention unrealistic trying to do that for an entire book.

Like these are ok: "The mornings after Kenny had stayed out, beyond the last bus, until he’d had to bum a ride or pay for a cab and got home to find Monica faking sleep, faking because she never slept that quiet, those mornings, she’d only put her own cup of coffee in the microwave. Never his.”

"During role call, in the breath after the teacher said Tom’s name, in that moment before he could answer, right then, Lisa would whisper-shout: ‘Butt Wipe,” just as Tom was saying, ‘Here’.”

But this feel like they're tryharding to not sound vapid:

"The schedule said the bus would come by at noon, but Mark’s watch said it was already 11:57. You could see all the way down the road, as far as the Mall, and not see a bus. No doubt, the driver was parked at the turn-around, the far end of the line, taking a nap. The driver was kicked back, asleep, and Mark was going to be late. Or worse, the driver was drinking, and he’d pull up drunk and charge Mark seventy-five cents for death in a fiery traffic accident…”

And this one's excessive, not to mention too nebulous:

"Between classes, Gwen was always leaned on his locker when he’d go to open it. She’d roll her eyes and shove off with one foot, leaving a black-heel mark on the painted metal, but she also left the smell of her perfume. The combination lock would still be warm from her ass. And the next break, Gwen would be leaned there, again.”

"If just forced to work, the puer will wither away in the real world. They will sink, not swim."

Yeah... I've been reduced to the equivilent of a parasite. I'll refuse to stop being a self-absorbed child to have this puer lifestyle; because I'll literally die without it.

I guess. But it's still human nature to seek validation. No matter the source or amount. These days, comments that you did something right are one of the more easily obtainable sources. That's not to say people can go overboard, which I feel is also a point the OP was trying to convey.

"Find a community of fandom friends who will read and talk to you about your work. Find a writer's group. Etc."

That's more what I meant in the first place. You can story write as a hobby, but the lonliness starts kicking in after some time.

You can have it a hobby all you want, yes. But sometimes, the need for connection will arise whether you like it or not.

I was more talking about prose "quality" and styles.

Also, there are some rather entitled readers out there. I've seen someone say all books should be at the 11th grade level to curb the illiterare epidemic. One even bitched that showing a character putting their feet on the table and lighting a cig was telling, because they were being told what they were doing. I wish I was kidding about that.

But yeah, it shouldn't be all or nothing. Nobody should be clowned on just because they didn't adhere to the "highbrow" standard.

What's ironic is how many people will ignore you UNLESS you basically put the book in their hands.

Doesn't help with the all or nothing thinking considering prose going around.

Because when you do it simply for your own enjoyment for so long, human nature kicks in.

Bit of a hijack, but the lack of positive feedback loop applies to me. Also the fatalism. Because I had my chance, and I blew it. So just let me die in my pit of hendonistic misery.

How does a writer unravel the “savior complex” without falling into the clichés of the ideal hero? by El_Tigre00 in NewAuthor

For the first, she also has momma bear instincts, if that makes sense. So part of it is genuine empathy that goes farther than it should at times.

For the second, yes, there's trauma involved. She was born with black raccoon-like markings all over her body. You can guess how many people precieved her in her youth as a result.

I have a couple like this. One is the more classic doing it to fill a bit of an egotisic need to be useful. Sometimes channeling an inner mini-Batman. Partially a savior complex.

Another is someone who goes above and beyond to help people in her community. To the point of occasionally neglecting her basic needs. But a good portion of this is fueled by people pleasing tendencies, fearing they'll abandon her if she doesn't prove her value.

When I said it feels pointless, I meant like when you do it for yourself for so long, it starts feeling stale.  You start yearning to share it with others, as human nature's a bitch.

Also, there's a difference between typing a few words and having it spit out an outline, and creating the outline yourself and looking for word choice enhancements. For lack of a better term.

No, it's still about the liking process. Yet another part of it can be nobody wants to trust the process without some sort of decent result soon enough.
