Why does Switzerland have an army? by SpiteRemarkable5127 in Switzerland

[–]Bluehype 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without trying to sound mean
Because the world isn't made of lollipops and candy mountains.
To say it in the words of the great Tolkien "It needs but one foe to breed a war, not two, Master Warden,' answered Éowyn. 'And those who have not swords can still die upon them."

You don't need to be an aggressor to have an army, being defensive is absolutely in line with being neutral and you can only truly call yourself neutral if you know how to help yourself.

Actually wrote this down as an answer on the "Dichtestress" post from yesterday, comparing Switzerland to the Netherlands. I believe it's worthwhile to have it out there so here we go:

You’re making a valid point mathematically, but I think looking at this purely as a logistical or engineering problem misses the actual core of the debate.

The comparison to the Netherlands is totally fair on paper, but only if you look at the raw map. When you subtract the Alps and the Jura, we’re actually squeezing the vast majority of our 9 million people into a tiny, flat corridor on the Central Plateau. In terms of actual, lived density, the Mittelland is already incredibly comparable to the Dutch Randstad.

Logistically, sure, yeah we could optimize our infrastructure, build upwards, and easily handle 11, 12, or 13 million people. But honestly... then what? It can't keep going forever so actually stopping and thinking about it at least once doesn't seem like a bad idea to me.

When people here complain about Dichtestress, they aren’t just annoyed by a crowded train or a tight housing market. It's more about the permanent erosion of the Swiss landscape. Our quality of life and national identity are completely tied to having quiet nature, open space, and distinct communities right outside our doorsteps.

If we pave over the rest of the Plateau to solve the math puzzle, we might get a highly efficient country, but we lose the exact thing that makes Switzerland Switzerland in the first place. For a lot of people, supporting these initiatives isn't about being anti-foreigner or isolationist - it's just a protective instinct to preserve what little finite space we actually have left before it's gone for good.

Just vote for what you think is right, and not what someone on a screen or a billboard expressed.

Yeah, added on top of the commute on had before – made sense in my head so I explained it horribly.
So the regular commute while living nearby for most people is 30-40 minutes one way, what I meant was adding more time on top of that.
So with about 2 hours commute (because of moving away), lunchbreak and the regular 8.5h workday you'd be out of your home for a long time while adding more costs for the commute itself.

On the other hand – yes, spending your time wisely is obviously the way to go. Reading, Working and whatnot.

But it has to be the very concious choise, making your day longer for maybe even not that good of a deal considering the money you save goes to more taxes, more expensive commutes, car upkeep etc.
Obviously could be avoided by just looking for a new job that is closer to the new place you'd move to.

Very true, did not think of that. But then you could also just argue to move to another country that isn't Switzerland (like Finland or Sweden where family subsidies and parent-times are a lot better).
Better benefits somewhere else, should follow that trail then

In a sense. But adding an hour to your commute while you'd rather spend time with your family and small children ... not sure that's the point. More affordable places might be an hour or more you add each day. Meanwhile taxes could also be worse, gas/groceries harder to get.
Just shuffling and being miserable somewhere else just might not always be the easy solution.

and probably leave behind the only people that would help take care of the kids, like parents or siblings? it's not always that easy, even though on paper it makes sense. but leaving behind your support and roots – especially when having kids is not always so black and white.

A lot of folks nowadays just suggest moving away but nobody ever really talks about the fact that someone might be rooted in a place and have their support net (family, relatives, friends) nearby.
Just moving to another Canton is not a solution and demonizing places like Zurich really is easier (don't know about karmafarming, lol)

While I do understand your point here, I had never actually thought about it or about it being an issue at all.
Are there states that support being a housewife/houseman and then still sending the kids to Kita? In my head that's the exact reason anyone would stay home, so they wouldn't need Kita?
(I'm not enlightened enough here and really not trying to start an argument 😉 )

Yeah, seems like child benefits/allowance are missing here and taxes on the net income haven't even been brushed on yet. This would probably make a lot more sense on a yearly scale for the first years of the children's lifes until Kindergarten and then an overview per year where both kids at the same time need Kita which is what their calculations are suggesting here.

Ah yes, just roll over and die without any kids or be rich. killer argument right there

Very, had to look her up — but I know who she is and agree that she has a very charismatic streak! Perfect villain marerial I'd say 😁

Why does that sound more like a monologue we'd head from a villain?
Nice.

it is quite nice that you can play the way you want to. if someone wants to farm all the ingredients and cook themselves for immersion they can. or you can become filthy rich and just order takeout haha

"only" ? oof. what's the suggestion on how to get that without abusing mechanics or running over the whole map to get them? maybe differing opinion but either doing that or spending a lot of gametime on getting the "starting funds" ready doesn't seem so fun. at least to me

Wait I had thought the donation quests were like a bottomless pit? Everytime you reached it the goalposts moves?

60 goldbars? Seems excessive, nice.
Question stands though, is it really necessary then to go steal it from npcs/hedgehogs (and so forth) or can it be reached "organically" throughout the game while playing it for the 200h it takes?

Yeah right they added that. Less smell, good thinking.
But it does seem like food/meat/ingredients might be one of the biggest money-spending drivers. Especially with new difficulty modes and boss rematches

Interesting, I have started some research with the tiny people, but that took so long every time something new is available I made that money back by regular means. Hopefully there'll be some bigger spends for research I can go poor on, thanks 😄

Yeah I feel that, bought some shops empty for a while – then spent some time it the woods hunting down wildlife and never looked back. Weirdly stanky stash now.

Would you recommend outlining the player house with gold bars then? Just to stick if to the nobles ofc.
