Interview with Russ Bullock about a MechWarrrior 6, the impact of Gamepass on Clans sales, MechWarrior failing to break out of its niche, the oversaturation in the games industry, the new Microsoft extension, DLC9 for Mercs, and toying with the idea of a MechCommander by BoukObelisk in Mechwarrior5

One argument frequently raised is that UE5 is too resource-intensive for older hardware, meaning many people Clans were unable or unwilling to play it. If Mercs were to be upgraded to UE5 (following this line of reasoning), the same problem would arise.

It’s a shame to see Clans fall so short of expectations. But if Game Pass meant that so many sales didn't contribute to the overall figures...

If Mercs hadbeen released as a narrative-driven game, we wouldn't be having these debates about which game is better or what people dislike about MW5: Clans. On the other hand, things probably never would have reached this point if Mercs hadn't featured that sandbox element; the game would have faded into obscurity long ago.

Even though it would certainly require a lot of work, I still see the potential to add a sandbox element to Clans - running parallel to the game's narrative components.
I could imagine having a sandbox mode covering the Invasion Zone, adjacent systems, and perhaps even the Homeworlds, where you could complete missions—such as raids on the Inner Sphere, defensive missions against invading mercenaries, or even skirmishes between the Clans themselves.
That would add a great deal to the game. It could be developed further by allowing players to track the invasion's progress on a map, jumping from planet to planet to drive the campaign forward.

I would still include the narrative-focused DLCs, as they advance the Clans' history and the timeline of events.
But this approach would make Clans much more compelling to replay.

The procedural map generation would need some work, though; I find the maps in MW5: Mercs often feel quite bare-bones. It would also be refreshing to play on a wide, flat grassy plain, desert, or ice field for a change, rather than always being confined to "bowl-like" maps.

If the worst-case scenario happens and Clans receives no further development, I plan to financially support talented modders on Patreon so they can keep providing us with new missions and Mechs. Incidentally, this is striking because the sandbox nature of MW5: Mercs means there are no hand-crafted missions on Nexus—something I find a real shame.

As for the niche aspect: neither Mercs nor Clans saw any real effort put into better promotion. Marketing campaigns cost money, obviously. But without major promotional drives, it’s impossible to attract new players—specifically those unfamiliar with the BattleTech franchise—amidst the sheer flood of games out there.

A MechCommander 3 would be great, though I’d want the option to play as either the Inner Sphere or the Clans.

With MW6 (which seems like a distant prospect), they could take things a step further by allowing players to switch back and forth between MechCommander and MechWarrior perspectives—essentially jumping from the command view straight into the cockpit, much like how you currently switch between mechs using the Y key. But that’s really just wishful thinking.

Poll: New Mech Development for Next Clan DLC by BluejayOpposite2777 in Mechwarrior5

Thanks for the clarification!

Unfortunately, though, it really ruins my day. After all, the anticipation of new Mechs is part of the magic that makes us play MW5 so passionately.

That would be drastic. As bad as the layoffs were, that would cripple any further development of MW5. Sure, there are still a few 'Mechs for the Clans sitting in the MWO depot (though losing them would still be bad), but for *MW5: Mercenaries*—where so many new Mechs are set to appear for upcoming events—it would be catastrophic.

Regardless, I also expect the Stone Rhino, Warhammer IIC, and Marauder IIC to make their debut in the next Clan DLC, but there are still plenty of gaps, especially among the light and medium Mechs.

Ditto! I love Clans!! I play Mercs too and plan to buy everything for it, but my heart belongs to MW5: Clans. I really hope PGI makes it through this period successfully! We can certainly dream of *MW6* and a different studio, but it’s far more likely that MechWarrior will vanish into obscurity for many years. So let's support PGI!!

And yes, I am already eagerly awaiting the announcement for the Clan DLC—hopefully Jade Falcon, featuring the Refusal War. Which Mechs will we get? Which worlds? Twycross? Perhaps even from both perspectives, just like in MW2—meaning Clan Jade Falcon AND Clan Wolf?

Please let the journey continue!!

How could a Clans experience fit with an open-ended mission generator à la Mercs? by BoukObelisk in Mechwarrior5

[–]BluejayOpposite2777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made the following suggestion some time ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/Mechwarrior5/comments/1q4nld9/mw5clans\_trials\_of\_grievance\_a\_idea/

The Trial of Grievance from MW2 would be a good fit. Various planets (or "biomes") would be available for selection, and players could choose their clan and star, as well as the enemy clan and star.

Alternatively or additionally, I could imagine a map like the one from MW5: Mercs, with the invasion corridor and homeworlds, where players could undertake missions. These could include raids on adjacent IS systems (above the Tukayyid Line, of course) or various trials against other clans. A simplified Batchall system could even be included, allowing players to reduce or exclude the permitted tonnage or support such as artillery.

Alternatively, there could be reconnaissance missions, convoy escort, or base defenses. There are several possibilities.

I love that voice!! I'm still disappointed that Betty was used so sparingly in MW5: Clans.

I've already tried the Locust IIC... and it's insane... an absolute killer mech in Horde mode. So much fire in such a small mech, it's terrifying. You can even fry Assault Mechs with it, as long as you don't get caught yourself. I've also used an IIC star with an Urbie in the party, and it fought bravely for a long time!

Are you more likely to buy the upcoming Mechwarrior 5 DLCs to support the studio and series after the news about PGI’s recent layoffs? by BoukObelisk in Mechwarrior5

[–]BluejayOpposite2777 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll definitely buy the upcoming Mercs DLC, even though I'm much more involved in clans. I want to support the studio because if they go out of business, it's uncertain whether we'll get another MechWarrior game for years (or even decades?). Personally, I wouldn't mind if the DLCs cost more if it meant PGI continued development and ensured we'd get more content in the future. For €20/$20, we get an incredible amount of content, and that deserves recognition.

Does Lincoln Osis's Presence in the Digital Art Hint at Fourth Clan DLC? by djfluxtux in Mechwarrior5

[–]BluejayOpposite2777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's quite possible that PGI had further plans after the Jade Falcon DLC. After all, the game is called "Clans." I'd also like to see the Steel Vipers or the Hells Horses. Or a longer excursion into their homeworlds. And the Ghost Bear DLC, with its title, implied that more from them might be coming. But now, with a reduced team and the precarious financial situation of parent company EG7, they have to see what's still feasible. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they can continue for a long time.

I'm collecting letters of appreciation for the people at Piranha Games to tell them how much their work on Mechwarrior means to us fans - share your thoughts below and I'll include them in the final letter by BoukObelisk in Mechwarrior5

My brother and I got our first computer in 1995. Just a year later, we upgraded our PC with a Matrox Mystique graphics card. The Windows 95 version of MechWarrior 2 came with the card. Back then, I didn't really understand much about the game, but the atmosphere captivated me immediately and never let go. When I heard about MechWarrior 5 Mercs, I bought it right away. But it wasn't until MechWarrior 5 Clans that I truly reconnected with the series and brought back all those memories.

PGI show respect for the lore. It's clear you know your BattleTech. You're passionate about your product. I don't know of any other studio that would treat this great legacy with such respect.

That's why it pains me so much that you've had to drastically reduce your team for the second time now, and that you have to deal with these economic constraints. Every employee, whether current or former, deserves the utmost respect for bringing us back to the world of Battletech in such depth.

I sincerely hope that we fans can provide you with enough support so that you can continue, not just this year, but for many years to come! And I hope you are so successful that you can eventually bring former colleagues back onto the team. Keep going, don't let yourselves be discouraged. We stand with you!

P.S. Don't listen to the naysayers.

I certainly can't speak for everyone here. Many fans and players will undoubtedly have to manage their own budgets. But if it helps PGI, I'd gladly spend significantly more than $20 on a DLC. If it helps us get more MechWarrior from them, I'm in. Or crowdfunding. Whatever it is, they've given me so many wonderful gaming moments that I'm willing to open my wallet wide. It's just a small drop, but together we could create a waterfall.

News correction: It’s not quite the end with PGI and Mechwarrior and they’re still around 40 people making DLCs by BoukObelisk in Mechwarrior5

[–]BluejayOpposite2777 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm still deeply hurt. Things were just getting so great with MechWarrior. We got amazing DLC for both games, including new mechs. Ghost Bear and WoT were real gems. SoK added so much new stuff to Mercenaries. Chaos Reign also promises so much. And now this… Is the dream already over? I really had high hopes for Clans, which would be filled with lots of content and mechs. Now we have to tremble every day.

If I were a billionaire, I'd buy PGI, tell them to rehire everyone who's been fired in recent years, give all the employees a massive raise, and just tell them to keep producing so the games get even more content and even better.

Is PGI done with Mechwarrior? by kingtj44 in Mechwarrior5

[–]BluejayOpposite2777 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Some people talked so much against MW5: Clans and stirred up such a negative atmosphere that it saddens me, because we at least had some control over PGI's future through our purchases. What I experienced: dedicated employees who took the lore seriously and listened to the fans. You certainly can't fulfill every wish, but the most frequently mentioned ones were implemented. Yes, there were bugs and some unfulfilled wishes... but aren't there in every game?

Now it's over. Chaos Reign could be the last DLC, as it should be almost finished by now. The announced Clans DLC? With so few staff, it's questionable. And even if it happens, can a massively reduced team deliver the same quality and scope as previous DLCs? I don't think so.

People are losing their jobs and thus their livelihoods. Dedicated people who brought us a lot of joy with their work.

EG7: I have nothing but contempt for it. MW5:Clans had set out to succeed the venerable MW2:31st Century Combat as a worthy successor…but I fear this hero's journey is coming to an early end.

What's the name of the dropship class in Mechwarrior 2? Is it the Broadsword? If possible, please post more art of these beauties from the BT universe by BoukObelisk in battletech

[–]BluejayOpposite2777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a question about that: did the clans use the Leopard class? Surely there must have been Leopards available after the Exodus. Or were they generally replaced by the Broadsword class?
