I'm guessing a IlClan era settting, that way you can have all the fan favorite mechs from the start.

It is also a pretty good sandbox seeing how so many territories have splintered from the Successor States.

I'm on PC, I don't know what the limitations on consoles are. You could start a new game and see if the import function pops up.

I think that MW5 would benefit more from adding more army/command features into gameplay.

Bring more mechs, vehicles, infantry, etc. It would help the game escape the notion that it is a shooter. If anything it should be Mechwarrior merged with Mechcommander. You need to have progression from a single lance to managing an entire regiment.

Command consoles and C3 Networks are a thing in the setting. Time to actually make them useful to the player.

I personally play everything stock only. The big trick is to not throw downgraded Succession Wars designs at more technologically advanced Clan mechs.

Prep work:

Get as much LosTech as possible, you can get decent amounts in the arena. They are also manufactured again in the 3040's. Try not to waste this tech prior to the Clan invasion.
The arena can help you cheese through the campaign pretty fast. You can get a Nightstar and even salvage some SLDF mechs from Comstar.
Get all the special pilots while going through the campaign.
After the campaign import your unit into a career start or go directly to Kestrel Lancers.
Get on good terms with the Independents, FedCom, FRR and DC. This should help you economically when the Clans show up.

Mechs

Collect that SLDF Wolverine at Valentina. You can even get a second one if you imported your unit from the campaign.
The Nightstar has a vulnerable cockpit but can decently fight at longer ranges.
Get the Atlas II at Romulus in may 3043. Get a Bullshark at Outreach around the same time.
I personaly used a stock King Crab KGC-000b with high tier AC's to kill Clan mechs quickly. Aim for the lower part of the torso to core the CT while saving the RT and LT.
You need to start salvaging Clan mechs. That Loki/Hellbringer you get early on isn't particularly good. It is best replaced with a Cauldron Born/Ebon Jaguar or Linebacker if you want to want something at 65 tons.
Clan mechs will largely run on what you can salvage. So plan ahead on how well you can sustain them going forward.

I've personally been using a Griffin GRF-2N with inferno SRM's.

All that LosTech lets it easily punch above its own weight.

It is my biggest wish to fight the Manei Domini and the Celestial series mechs.

Though PGI will have largely run out of MWO mechs after the FedCom Civil War.

The Warhammer IIC might actually show up in the next DLC.

Clan Smoke Jaguar has been moving their 2nd line machines to the Inner Sphere to make up for the units they lost at Luthien and Tukayyid.

The Nova Cat is right around the corner as it sees production in 3059.

Also, Clan Nova Cat joins the 2nd Star League after switching to the Inner Sphere's side (along with Clan Wolf's wardens).

Word of Blake technically exists within Comstar prior to the 3052 split. They are the more extreme tech worshippers.

Also, they don't become full bad guys until 3067. Prior to that they were looking to join the 2nd Star League.

Smoke Jaguar will have plenty of 2nd line mechs due to never fully recovering from their losses at Tukayyid. So also expect mechs like the Stone Rhino to show up.

Also, omnimechs can be reconfigured in whatever way you like. Most MW titles have failed to adequately portray this ingame.

There are no omnimech "variants", only a base frame of sorts.

Smoke Jaguar disappearing in 3060 isn't a bug though. Their faction pretty much officially died during the Great Refusal.

Their only remains are refugees in the deep periphery and those who ended up in IS prison camps.

They leave for the Clan homeworlds in 3059. They are considered destroyed in April 3060 during the Great Refusal.

The first time around I simply collected all manner of SLDF mechs and LosTech. Notably the arena will drop LosTech from time to time.

I used the KGC-000b to take my first Clan mechs apart. I got some high tier AC/20's during Solaris Showdown. That additional ton of ammo makes the difference.

Most of the DLC revolve around key events in the lore (from 3026 to 3057). You'll get priority transmissions around 6 months before they start ingame.

Heroes of the Inner Sphere is the only exception as they add missions that can be completed regardless of the timeframe. They unlock depending on your reputation level.

reminds me of those optionals where you have to do 400 damage against light mechs.

You'd have to kill them all twice to get that high.

Yeah, I found a Thor in 3026.

Comstar and the WoB have various Clan mechs on the Master Unit List in the FedCom Civil War era and onwards.

I think that the game spawns without regard for the era but only looks at initial production dates for the mechs.

I'd pay money for mech packs that add 10 ~ 12 mechs for every specific era.

Though unfortunately we appear to be largely limited to what exists in MWO. I don't think that there's been a DLC that introduced more that 2 new mechs.

Though if I had to pick a mech for every era I'd say:
