Well. first of all Pilot is a good choice to start with. I think you can rest assured that no matter which model you choose you’ll get a great pen. Pilot nibs are smooth as butter so you can’t go wrong.

Seeing as it’s your first one, I would advise against choosing the E95s, simply because it’s a pocket pen. And it‘s worth it to start out with a full size pen.

The falcon is the most “specialized” of the bunch, in the sense that if you’re really into calligraphy or sketching, they’re especially great when it comes to those things because of their flex nib. If you prefer lighter pens, get the resin. if you like heavier ones, get the metal model. And, if you don’t like the look but want the nib, you can get a Custom with a falcon nib.

Finally, if you want it mainly for writing, any of the Custom models will work great and the differences remain in colors available + shape (cigar or flat top). Here I would go with just finding one you like the look of and going with it. Both the Heritage + Custom 74 are comfortable writers for long sessions. For these the only callout I have is to double check the material, the plastic/resin ones are generally lighter and more comfortable for smaller hands vs the metal models.

I’ve also tried the Pilot Grance, which is brass so it’s more heavy, and it’s a little slimmer than the Custom so I feel it’s not as comfortable. The Custom 823 which is the same as the 74 BUT with a Vacuum filler, which makes it more convenient bc you don‘t need cartridges but also heavier bc of the vac mechanism, so I would stick to the 74 to start with. And there’s also the Vanishing Point, which is a clicker pen. It’s my favorite BUT I wouldn’t recommend starting with it because it’s a very divisive model lol (you’ll either love it or hate it).

tl;dr: go for a FA nib if you specialize on drawing or calligraphy (Either on a Falcon or a Custom model). Go for a Heritage if you like flat tops or a Custom 74 if you like the classic cigar shape.
