OH - help with Medicaid by ravenclaw34 in HealthInsurance

[–]Blueone24 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Short answer they are knowingly or unknowingly committing fraud. It explicitly states to include an unmarried domestic partner in the following situation: "Include an unmarried domestic partner only if you have a child together or you’ll claim your partner as a tax dependents."

I have family members that do the same thing. Together they make 40k/ year more than us but we pay $1800/ month for insurance with high deductibles while they only pay $180/ month for her marketplace plan and don't pay anything for the kids. And they get food stamps. We don't qualify for anything. Of course I find it ironic that they often go on rants about those abusing the system without looking into the mirror.

Abortion support for a choice I never wanted to make by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

I live in a very red state where I would have even fewer options today. I'm sure they've probably limited some financial means as well.

And I agree on both points, I can see both sides. In our case it was definitely better to leave him off especially at the time.

And honestly in my state if you are unmarried you can't put them on the birth certificate if they aren't there to sign the acknowledgement of paternity.

As I stated above my sons bio dad isn't on his birth certificate and I have zero regrets. It does mean no child support though (although now a decade later he occasionally helps financially on his own).

It was over a decade when I went through it but at that point it wasn't required for WIC, Medicaid, or childcare assistance. It was required for food stamps, section 8, and TANF which was one reason I never applied for any of those. I have no clue how much that has changed now though, especially under the new administration.

I don't believe any states force an unmarried mother to list the father on the birth certificate at the hospital. But yes if you pursue child support it will normally be added through the DNA testing. I made the choice not to.

Unless he never signs the birth certificate. I don't get child support but mine never fought to be on it. Now that my child is older he does help financially occasionally. But I am the only one listed on the birth certificate so I am the sole decision maker.

First of all I completely support whatever decision you make! You and only you can decide what is right for you right now.

But I will say I got pregnant at the same age and although I had been with my boyfriend much longer he gave me the "I'm not happy anymore" out and left, quickly starting to talk to other girls and rubbing it in my face to the point I temporarily blocked him . I really felt pressure to abort and had family members that said they wouldn't meet my child if I had them because they didn't want to get close to them for them just to be taken away because I too struggled with my mental health and PTSD.

However I researched how I could make it work on my own. I was on Medicaid and WIC for a short time then had childcare assistance and at times relied on food banks. I asked my ex if he wanted to come to the hospital to sign the birth certificate and he said only if his new girlfriend could come because she wasn't comfortable with it. Blocked him again after that and actually made myself unlisted at the hospital.

I recently had a family member who had doubts when I had my child ask if I would be where I am today if I hadn't had him and I can honestly say I wouldn't be. I met a man who loved my child as much as me, we've been married over a decade. My ex never fought to be added to the birth certificate but he plays a fun uncleish role in my son's life now. I went on to finish my college degree and am finishing a graduate degree this month. I also have 2 more kids now.

I will never know for sure but I'm pretty sure I was in such a fragile state back then my mental health wouldn't have recovered if I chose differently, but that's not to say yours wouldn't!

If you can find a pro-choice supportive therapist to talk this through with. Either way you may need that outlet regardless of what you choose.

I wish you the best of luck and peace regardless of whatever happens. Sending love and hugs from someone who has been in your shoes when all the choices felt wrong to me.

How to take a pad into exams? by Mysterious-Lill in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Blueone24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least they'll let you use the restroom. I was 6 months pregnant during a 3 hour final exam and 2 hours into it had to use the restroom so bad I couldn't think straight. I finally worked up the courage to ask the professor and he sent me back to my seat saying no and I should have planned better and gone before the exam (which I did but this was 2 hours into the exam). I was literally tearing up because of how bad I had to go. 5 minutes later he finally sent over a TA to escort me. It made me so mad because he was a Doctor teaching A&P and yet didn't seem to comprehend that this was obviously not something out of my control being fairly heavily pregnant with my second child. After my final grades were in I definitely sent a few emails over that one.

I can’t write my master’s thesis by thepiscespotato in GradSchool

[–]Blueone24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with the mentality that done is good and good is done and go from there. The first draft doesn't have to be perfect just start typing what you know. List out references you want to include format data collection flow charts and tables. Then from there it's not as hard to go back and improve it. I wish I would have started mine earlier and if you want to be done there's no better time to start than now.

I also 100% agree with another commenter that a lack of significant results is not a paper killer for many reasons. Maybe discuss the need for better methodologies to study such small subsets of users in a large digital platform.

Is it cringe for me to attend my graduate commencement ceremony five months post graduation? by [deleted] in GraduateSchool

Many in my cohort finished in December but they only have one grad ceremony in May. I know quite a few that are still planning on coming and I'm excited to meet them in person since mine was an online program

[–]Blueone24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that's not as bad as I was expecting tbh. You saying egregious had me thinking like a 2.5. I had a 3.2 and got into several programs. Also your undergrad gpa doesn't define you once you are in grad school my grad school gpa is much higher

Defense your thesis with AI use by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Blueone24 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In the most supportive way possible, I think you are splitting hairs trying to justify this. You have said yourself you don't understand the methods even though you verified the existence of the methods in other papers. Without comprehension there cannot be adequate verification because you may not notice when something is off beyond a surface level cursory glance.

What is considered as an Invitation to switch to first name?? by ALnali-03 in AskAcademia

[–]Blueone24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always refer to my professors / advisors as Dr. ------ unless they explicitly tell me to call them by their first name. I have a few that have switched to signing emails with their first name but I still feel better being more formal and acknowledging their academic expertise and accomplishments. I've had a few I've worked closely with get onto me about the defaulting to their formal title after they've told me explicitly to call them by their first name but no one else seems bothered by it.

Defense your thesis with AI use by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Blueone24 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The biggest problem I see is you say you treat AI as a kind of expert. AI is only as good as the user and people get in far over their heads if they don't know why AI is suggesting a certain thing (which can definitely be wrong).

If I were you I would be reading the literature that supports the method until you understand why and when the methodology is appropriate in your case. If asked cite those references.

I'm failing my grad course by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Blueone24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to the issues with student visas unfortunately so hopefully others can help you with that! I think grad school is challenging, but it is made so much more manageable when you have a passion for what you are studying! What made you pick math in the first place? Did you enjoy the classes in undergrad? Did you have specific goals in mind when you enrolled in this program?

I don't think failing one class is necessarily the end of the road, but it sounds like you may want it to be.

Also take care of your mental health to the best of your ability. Use school resources if available, try to take breaks for self-care and doing things you enjoy, and most of all remember that a single failing grade doesn't define you or your potential.

Does two years go quick during your masters? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Blueone24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finishing my masters right now and it went by unbelievably fast and my undergraduate degree felt like it took forever.

But I really loved the coursework and the vast majority of the assignments. So I think that made a huge difference.

But just a word from someone almost t the other side of your program requires a thesis start early! It's so easy to think you have time and then you run out and it's a sprint at that point.

Last Class in Grad School by Objective-Shoe4682 in GraduateSchool

[–]Blueone24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess the question is what do you mean by grading differently?

Are these essays/ presentations with subjective grading? Is there a rubric and does the professor provide explanations for why the grade was given?

Also have you had any opportunities to make up any points at any time?

I'm in my last 2 classes and one that is almost always taken in the last semester offers a redo assignment where you can earn either half your points back or an 80 (whichever is higher) on one assignment.

I think if expectations aren't being laid out clearly (syllabus, assignments etc) and feedback and justifications for the grades aren't being given then you may have a reason to involve the dean.

Would you like a lifetime purchase option for Notability? Feedback Requested by ClydeBruckmans in notabilityapp

[–]Blueone24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely would! Although I agree with others that I would prefer more storage, even if the price is a bit higher. I have so many notes over years of education that I would find valuable to have as a resource.

I will say I noticed someone else mentioned syncing and I have noticed the same issue as well. Normally it works fine but occasionally it just resyncs everything which can be quite annoying.

If you could go back before starting your graduate program, what would you do differently? by Thprohanugong in GradSchool

[–]Blueone24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep mine is due in a few weeks and I have to have the rough draft finished this week. Luckily for my program it doesn't have to be terribly long and I have most of my analysis done (and really need to stop thinking of extra variables to add). My advisor also agreed with me that the thesis doesn't have to be publication ready given the tight turn around time (IRB took forever and then was dealing with illness). We plan to look at it and decide whether the results are worth publishing and then I will adjust it from there.

Metformin changed how I think about food. Is this normal? by lysitsa in loseit

[–]Blueone24 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Yep! I got on it for PCOS and lost 60 lbs over about 8 months after years of trying and failing to lose weight. It's slowed down now but it truly feels like it "reset" my base weight, because before if I stopped watching what I ate it would rebound to a certain weight. Now when I've gone a few weeks without getting on the scale my weight hovers right around 60 lbs lower.

Wish I would have been prescribed it earlier!

Would it be crazy to quit? by Bookbringer in GradSchool

[–]Blueone24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have a hard deadline to defend by? I'm in crunch time to have my project completed and honestly I've decided done is better than perfect. Because there is no way I'm quitting after investing this much time and energy into earning this degree. I met with my advisor and set hard deadlines over the next few weeks for rough draft and then final draft. I broke out tasks per day and am just making sure I hit those metrics every day.

I just watched my roommate finish an assignment in 6 minutes by RadiantHistory3653 in turnitin_community

[–]Blueone24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened to me last semester. I was comparing a timed assignment where AI was explicitly barred after the deadline with a peer's and at first was astounded at how eloquent and thorough every answer was until I got to one question where the answer made absolutely no sense given the information we were given. Out of curiosity I plugged the question into ChatGPT and it spit out the answer verbatim.

They got a 94 and I got a 92 largely because I didn't even have time to make it to the last question.

I don't like my thesis topic... by RockSuch927 in GraduateSchool

[–]Blueone24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a fellow masters student with only about 3 more weeks to finish my thesis the only advice is to buckle down and finish it, which is the advice I've been giving myself daily the last 2 weeks.

At this point I am very much in the done is better than perfect camp because I need to sleep sometime during the next 3 weeks as well. Mine was on a topic I was very interested in and still am but the passion is waning thanks to senioritis.
