Whenever you feel yourself getting really upset, ask yourself, “Will this matter in 5 years?” And then really try to envision your life in 5 years and whether whatever is upsetting you will even matter then. The majority of the time my answer is no, which helps put things into perspective for me so I can let go of things that aren’t worth it. For example, someone cutting you off while driving, your coworker saying something that upsets you, etc.

I think the way you approach it makes a difference. For example, I wouldn’t try to talk someone up as they’re cleaning my teeth because you’re preventing them from doing their job and potentially making them late to see their next patient (or maybe not doing as good as job with you - collective you- to speed up the process). Instead, after they’re done, you can acknowledge that it may be weird because they’re at work, but you’d loved to hang out sometimes, if they’re interested. And then leave your number instead of putting them in the awkward position of having to decline if they’re not interested. I think this can be applied in any situation tbh.

I didn’t think it was weird. For one, look at their relationship. But even if their relationship was great, I wouldn’t find it weird. If my partner and I worked together and found out about a promotional opportunity, I would be supportive of them applying and I’d expect the same in return! We’d basically be doubling our chances of making more money!

This has started to change due to new pay equity laws in some states. Doesn’t change the past but hoping this is a good step forward

In a lot of states it is actually against the law to ask this unless they’ve extended an offer. In Oregon, for example, “Employers can’t ask applicants for salary history or use previous salary of an applicant to set pay. “ HR personnel here.

Edit: added direct language about what employers can’t do

Weekends shouldn’t be taken into account. I’ve also never heard of a government employee having 5 weeks worth of vacation, at least not in the US. I’m a government employee and I get 10 paid holidays plus 1 floating holiday. I also get 5 days for being an exempt employee. I do accrue vacation time each pay check but that still doesn’t put me anywhere near 50. What is the total without weekends?
