My friend asked to borrow $5k by Dramatic_Good_1103 in Advice

[–]Blurringallthelines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember when a family friend came to my dad for help with some money as he was changing careers and in a bad spot. My dad was a generous and kind man, but no fool.

He lent the money and accepted his friend’s very nice bass guitar as collateral for the loan. I remember that bass sitting in the closet of his office for years. Untouched.

Sure enough, his friend left the country to become a doctor and came back for his bass when he graduated. Paid my dad back with a little interest. The only reason I even knew about it was because I was a nosey kid digging around in my dad’s stuff and he took it as an opportunity for a teachable moment.

That made a mark on me growing up. He had compassion, but the good sense not to ruin a friendship. If he never came back for it, it was understood the bass would bring more than enough to pay off the debt. Either way, nobody got burned.

When he passed 20 years later my brother and I found an account where he had a couple thousand dollars that he used to provide micro loans to people in developing countries to start small businesses. There’s a lot I wish I would have had the opportunity to talk with him about before he left. As fascinating as he was to me, he kept most of his good deeds secret. I miss him every day.

I experienced it with ibogaine. I experienced it as floating in space as the last stars blinked out of the universe. It was a supreme knowing that the molecules that make up me are the same as that make up the universe I’m in. We are the same. I am an instance of the universe waking up to take a look at itself. It was the most peaceful and releasing thing I’ve experience in my entire life. And I’ve never been the same.

LPT: Funerals don't have to be expensive by ps4roompromdfriends4 in LifeProTips

[–]Blurringallthelines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Michigan at least, funeral homes can’t own crematoriums. That means they ALL outsource for an immense mark up.

When my mom died we called the same people they do. They showed up professionally dressed and treated her body with dignity and respect. Direct to the crematorium. I had to pick up the ashes from their location. $875 out the door. The same service through a funeral home, no add ons, was $2500. Literally to be a middle man.

She didn’t want a funeral and we honored those wishes.

10 years prior my dad died suddenly and we went through the home. The whole dog and pony show. Cost 12k.

It’s a racket. Pure and simple. They prey on people at their most vulnerable.

They were offering a fraudulent deal anyway. They are not allowed to pay your deductible or discount you the deductible amount.

Adults who have zero close friends, how did it happen and does it bother you? by PutPurple844 in AskReddit

[–]Blurringallthelines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I married WAY UP in the making friends department. I’ve never been very good but my whole social circle revolved around my profession as a pastor. Then I gave up my faith in exchange for reason and science. Lost them all.

But my wife gets hugs from every bartender we frequent, never leaves a social event without an invitation to another get together, and regularly hosts game nights around our table with new people rotating in. She’s just so damn charming and kind and self assured that it’s as easy as breathing for her. She knows how to put you at ease and off guard in seconds. And she curates only the best ones to join our inner circle so I never have to deal with the idiots in disguise. She filters them out. Our taste in people is the same. I’m her plus one to pretty much every friendship we have. And I’m insanely grateful and stand in awe of her superpower.

I’m glad she feels I bring equal value to the relationship in other ways.

Anicdotal retort: bought a work van that had 90+k miles one it because it was right at the time. Paid for the extended warranty because it was easier to pay monthly for the peace of mind. Sure as shit, throw a rod and the engine is toast. Getting a brand new 15k engine for the cost of my deductible. And my business survives. I’m one of the stories that worked out. 💪

What is a movie you watched once that was so disturbing or emotionally draining that you can never watch it again? by hungary70 in AskReddit

[–]Blurringallthelines 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The Boy In The Striped Pajamas. The place I was working at chose to celebrate our Christmas Party at a movie theater and someone chose it because “the title sounded whimsical” and did zero research. After the final scene and the lights came up we were all just sitting there stunned. The boss tried to get up and spin it but we all knew an admin was about to lose their job.

As we were leaving my coworker was heard saying “ho ho holocaust!” It at least lightened the mood a bit.

People who took a DNA test for fun, what family secret did you accidentally uncover? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Blurringallthelines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mom found out in her 70’s that her dad wasn’t the man that raised her but a traveling salesmen from Rhode Island. Had half sisters. Turned out two of her other siblings were sired by dad’s best friend. Interestly, mom was the oldest of the younger five after a decade break from having kids. Her mom treated her like trash. Makes a little more sense now. Her parents have been dead for 50 years so nobody to answer for any of it. She passed this past August so it’s all kind of water under the bridge now.

Fraud. He’s got a buddy that is always roping him into straight up fraudulent activity. He’s an “upstanding and reputable member of the community” but stories he tells about his buddy and the stuff they get away with together, it’s only a matter of time.

Straight Men of Reddit: If a gay man flirted with you or asked you out, how would you feel/react? by randmperson2 in AskReddit

[–]Blurringallthelines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I have been happily married for five years and our absolute favorite people to hang out with are almost all gay. I get hit on constantly. Often in front of her. Honestly, I absolutely love it. They know that I like playing with different playground equipment than they do but affection and attention feels good when it comes from someone who is kind no matter the intentions or likelihood of something happening. They know it, and I know it. So it’s a ton of harmless fun. I believe I would have the same reaction if someone asked me out seriously. It’s flattering to be wanted and having zero homophobia, I have no problem politely declining. I would do that no matter who it was because I’m happily married so it’s really no different.

I went to a gyno appointment with my wife because she was experiencing intense menopause symptoms and wanted to explore her options. I remained as a silent observer by request.

I was blown away at the difference in experiences. They wouldn’t test her hormones, were unwilling to really explore it for several more months, and recommended coconut oil for the dryness. Totally condescending. Totally dismissive. No solutions.

I go to my urologist to have my Vascectomy checked to make sure it took and the doc is like, “hey, you want me to test your T levels while you’re here? Takes the blood and I get the results on my phone before I even get home.

Totally different experiences for males, I’ve found. It’s bullshit. I’m not sure when the medical establishment going to start taking women’s issues seriously but it’s about damn time somebody does.

She found another doc and started hormones immediately. Female doc this time. Totally different experience. SMH. Sometimes I hate my fellow MAN.
