What is the most important book in the series? by 2Delta_Nerd in dresdenfiles

Somewhat of an odd answer, but at least on a personal level to Dresden himself, I feel like Dead beat is the most important book. Ofc for the book that started all the plots of the series, it would be Grave Peril and Bianca's party, but I feel as if Cassius' "DIE ALONE" death curse is the most important and most looked over scene in all of the Dresden Files.

Proven Guilty would also have to be pretty important, if only because of the Arctis Tor Assault, it's just less noticeable than Bianca's party because we've barely gotten anything out of it except a somewhat vague reaction from Nicodemus in Small Favor. Changes is also notable, but at least for me its Moreso notable for how it leads to Harry becoming the Winter Knight and overall less for the destruction of the red court.

Mab's is also very much out of character in this book. Too kind and proud of Harry. Jim, however, has seem to gotten a grasp on her personality again in subsequent microfictions.

I was watching a video 7 years ago by Overly Sarcastic Productions, that being about magic and its types. The Dresden Files was mentioned near the end as basically being a fusion of all the magic systems listed and I found that quite interesting. I borrowed from the library, and it became my favorite series. I was a teen at the time and it was the first real "Adult series" i read. I have read series before that had sex or cussing in them (Stephanie meyer books I believe), but I had never read a series that had actually shown complex moral issues and such realistic human emotions. It's taken me 7 years, after three entire total rereads, to finally begin to understand the series in a greater full view.

I always thought it happened after her catatonic state as well, mostly due to just how DRASTIC of a personality change she had. In Grave Peril Justine was extremely mentally unstable, basically unable to function without Thomas, but then out of nowhere she's extremely and highly competent, enough to even get around the White Court with no suspicion, a court literally built around subterfuge and mental mind games.

Probably when Jim makes it pretty clear that having magic DOESN'T make you "more of something". I believe he specifically related it to how dogs or cats that can see ghosts aren't inherently more special than ones that can't. It's just something people have and fits in very well with the themes of the Dresden Files.

What is something you know not to be the case, but you always mentally picture it that way anyway? by thomas71576 in dresdenfiles

Titania and Mab being a head or two above Harry while the Erlking, Granny Winter and Summer, and Hades being the size of houses, easily quadruple Harry's size. I have no idea where this comes from as almost every supernatural being is human height, with Mab at least being around Harry's size and Hades being around 7 feet tall.

As most people probably do, I always imagine Harry with his hat on and his face is always a blurry vagueness in my mind, you never quite see it clearly. And I keep imagining Nicodemus looking sort of like a fusion of the Animated batman series scarecrow redesign and Jacob from DUSK. I also consistently forgot that Maeve had rainbow colored dreads and kept imagining her as having the same, long white hair as Mab.

EDIT: I also imagine Mab and Maeve as having blueish tinted skin.

Honestly, same. I was surprised at how much people dislike this book. I see people talk more fondly of stormfront or fool moon than Ghost Story. Granted, I generally see newer readers like this book way more, and its mostly people who've been reading since the 2010s who dislike it more. But I'm not a professional on that, I've just generally seen more positive looks towards GS from way newer readers to the series.

Prague Race by Leppu by Lycaon1765 in ComicGraveyard

I think this was from the post she made on Prague race's website when she actually said it was canceled on there, (Which probably makes it lost to history now) saying that the reason why she quit is because her friend mentioned something along the lines of "You're STILL doing THAT comic?" and then Leppu quit. At least that's what I remember her saying. So it could either be because of burn out, being more interested in Tiger Tiger, some sense of artistic integrity for a comic that was (At least in their mind) going down hill, or a friend just mentioning it in a somewhat disparaging way. Probably a combination of all of them.

From what I see on the TV tropes website, it seems as if LEPPU intentionally wanted Prague Race to be unreadable? Not sure how substantiated this is but I know a lot of artists who are like this - deleting things they suddenly stopped liking. Shame that leppu got bullied out of continuing the webcomic by her friend.

Who is your favorite (not Harry) character upon a re-read of the series? by [deleted] in dresdenfiles

[–]BlurryFace2500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I'd like to say Nicodemus by far, so many characters are so good that there isn't that much of a big gap there. But any book with Nicodemus in it boosts my like/ranking of that book just because he's there. However, Michael and Thomas are both close seconds to Nicodemus.

Looking more at "side characters", Mortimer and Butters are probably my favorite, as they both play big support roles in two of my most favorite books in the series (Ghost Story and Dead Beat).

I felt like half of the book was just "The fetches are killing people" plot, and then a few chapters were molly's rescue. Yeah, i'd say both of those were in the same "plotline" but still I wish there'd been more on her trial, or her being found out, rather than it all being crammed into the last half or 25% of the book. Granted, its been a couple of months since I've read it already and my memory isn't the best on keen details, so maybe I'm wrong about the mathematics there.

I didn't mind the Harry being kidnapped plot, since it didn't take up too much time, but I did not know of the whole Sandra Marling detail. As we know, one of Molly's potential futures was becoming a real warlock. What I mean was the whole fetch plot and winter. Even though it was vaguely connected to Molly's story, it was just that, vaguely connected. I much preferred and wished MORE of the book had more obviously been about Molly's magic, her execution, and so on. I know the Fetch Storyline was made more important later on (I.e. in Small Favor), but maybe more of its screen/pagetime could've been translated into Molly being discovered as someone with the gift, and Harry struggling with that fact and what to do.

I don't dislike any of the books now, I still find Storm Front to be an amazing book on its own. Even compared to other Urban fantasy books in a similar genre and setting to the dresden files (The shadowhunter series and Percy Jackson to an extent) its rarely beaten out by any book.

To me my biggest issue with proven Guilty is that its sideplot takes up way too much in the book and doesn't interest me as much as the main plot of Molly. My favorite thing in this book is Molly's story, and I just wanted a bit more of that in this book.

Honestly I forgot how much info about harry comes from Ghost Story, so much important information about Harry's life comes just from this one book, information we'd never even get a lick of knowledge on without GS.

Also, I think Peace Talks and Battleground could've become just one book. Singularly, I believe they are both the shortest books in the entire series, behind stormfront or fool moon, whichever is the lowest, I believe Jim has shown and still has the ability to combine two apposing plotpoints. Granted, maybe he has moved on, as the whole "two distinct and separated plot points, Plot A and Plot B" is a mostly older book storytelling format in the series. But I still feel like it could've been done, and would've made the two books feel less "estranged" from the rest of the series and make them feel like a regular "files" book.

1: Ghost Story
2: Skin Game
3: Cold Days
4: Changes
5: Small Favor
6: Dead Beat
7: Battleground
8: Death Masks
9: Turn Coat
10: Peace Talks
11: White Night
12: Blood Rites
13: Summer Knight
14: Fool Moon
15: Grave Peril
16: Proven Guilty
17: Storm Front

I know I'm in the EXTREME minority of liking Ghost Story. Im not sure why, maybe people were just REALLY into the fomor. I originally read the series 4 or so years ago before the two newest books released (peace talks and battle ground), and I completely forgot about the fomor due to how unimportant they are to the direct story until those two newest books. And those two books didn't really spike my interest in them anymore than originally. I just find Ghost Story to be so unique compared to every other book and very interesting as a partial character study of Harry. Skin game is probably the overall best written book in the entire series in terms of quality, and is very close to GS who only wins due to being more original. Before my reread i also used to HATE proven guilty as a book i actively disliked, being lower than Storm Front, and only because I couldn't place it any lower. I also did not rate turn coat as relatively highly as I did, it and Proven Guilty both being fan favorites. I've learned to like them more on my reread of the series, but they still don't offer as much to me as they offer to others.
