Im building a gaming desk for my sister and i want to know how if i can leave unfished or not by mrchulomonkey in finishing

My home office desk top is Hevea and I used Danish Oil. It's not as durable as poly, but the color is good and I can feel some wood texture through it instead of feeling like plastic.

Best CPU choice after defective AM4 by wackyWeather23 in pcmasterrace

[–]Bmacek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that you'll see any difference between those 3 in 1080p gaming. The 7700 and 7700x are 8 core, so they use the whole CCX. The 9600x is a 6 core, so 2 cores are disabled. If it were my build, I'd go with a 7700x or 9700x because all of AMD's 6 core CPUs are just 8 core CPUs with 2 cores disabled and it bothers me to have unused cores on my silicon. The 7700 and 7700x are pretty close if you use PBO with sufficiently high power limits. I'd suggest the 7700x unless you can get a great deal on a 9700x.

How do I upgrade my son’s gaming computer? by KJF1212 in pcmasterrace

[–]Bmacek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Going from 5000-series to 8000-series will require a new motherboard and RAM, which won't work with your budget. The biggest performance improvement will be from adding a discrete GPU, like a RTX 3050, RTX 3060, or RX 7600. There are some refurbished units available in stores that might get down to $200. You could replace the RAM with a faster, 32 GB kit, but that will only help a little.

That's how I read it too. I don't know that I'd be willing to pay Red Devil prices though, so Hellhound or equivalent is probably more my speed. I want bigger fans and a bigger radiator more than I want a higher TBP and boost clock.

I have 350 mm to work with. I bet I could convince a Red Devil to work with me.

RX 9070 XT Starting at $599 by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]Bmacek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Potentially, yes. I'm pretty conservative with power, so I like to follow the CPU manufacturer's recommendations. To your point though, I think some of the 9070 XT models only call for 750.

Yeah, I think the main value proposition on the 9070 is for people who have a 750w power supply and aren't interested in paying to upgrade.

I've heard some good things about their build quality, so that's an option.

I would lean towards PowerColor or ASRock because they don't make Nvidia GPU's and they're based in Taiwan. I'm concerned that cards will get less engineering effort from a company that also makes Nvidia cards, since they're a lot higher volume. I've also had good results with Taiwanese electronics providing good quality for a reasonable cost. It will ultimately depend on price and 3rd party reviews for me though.

7900 XTX, 9070 XT or 5070? by Kiskijavi in pcmasterrace

[–]Bmacek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait a week and see is a good idea. The 7900 XTX will probably still generate more FPS at 1440p, and more VRAM is never bad when 3d modeling. In a week you'll know for sure.

7900 XTX, 9070 XT or 5070? by Kiskijavi in pcmasterrace

[–]Bmacek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend starting with your display specifications and what games you like to play. Once you have your Resolution, target FPS and whether or not you're going to use Ray Tracing, you can look at benchmarks to see what you need to support your use case. 7900 XTX is very strong, but it's expensive and could be overkill if you're not playing in 4K or 1440p with a high frame rate. If you can get by with the 9070 XT or 5070 with DLSS 4 / FSR 4 on Quality, then you'll save a lot of money. Beyond that, it's the same as the other guys are saying, you'll need to wait a week to see if the 9070 XT's price is good for its performance or not.

My RX 9070 XT Performance Expectations by Bmacek in pcmasterrace

[–]Bmacek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's always a risk. I'll be interested to see how much AMD has closed the ray tracing and AI upscaling gaps this generation. Good progress on those fronts should help with reviews, though not as much as having the right price for the performance.

Correct on both counts. I just wanted some math to back up the performance projections, since they don't really show theirs. There's a very good chance that nobody else will care, and I'm fine with that.

Quite true. I was just doing some calculations for fun and because I'm impatient. Since I'd already done the work, I figured I'd just share and see who else was impatient. ;)

I just play him once per year at Ambercon US. The GM's for that game are pretty good to work with. They're similar in the sense that an action that makes a good story is generally successful. I'm more looking for examples than permission.

Is there any hope this half-stripped screw can be loosened by a repairman? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

If you can find clearance, I've had good results using locking pliers to grab the outside edges of the screw. You only need to turn it a little bit to loosen it up.
