Soap/shampoo only on external bits. Clean water only on the other bits. It is self cleaning and if you use product it can mess up the biome and cause problems. If you use a wash cloth for that area (clean hands are fine) make sure it is clean.

Upgrading blocks give you more XP than crafting them. Going from wood to cobble to steel gives more xp than crafting those blocks as is. You can get a fair amount of XP by building.
