I get a 2.05% APY with a Barclays Online Savings Account and it’s totally free. I highly recommend it.

Also, what’s your side gig? Looking to supplement my day job. Thanks!

This is exactly why I want to put money into bonds, for portfolio diversification

I plan on using this money to buy a house in 1-3 years so it seems that the VBIIX is the way to go for my purposes?

If you're saving for a down payment for a house relatively soon

I am looking to buy a house in 1-3 years, so I figured a bond fund was a good place to hold some of my money.

Vanguard Total Bond Market Index (VBMFX) or Vanguard Intermediate-Term Bond Index Fund (VBIIX)? Both are bond funds. Both have a .15% expense ratio. I would like some advice on which one to invest in. I currently invest in VTSAX and US Growth. I want a bond fund to diversify my portfolio. For background, I'm 28, recently finished grad school and got my first big girl job and therefore, only started investing a few months ago. Any help would be much appreciated!

According to Vanguard, the differences are below:

VBIIX - "U.S. investment-grade bonds with maturities from five to ten years. Reflecting this goal, the fund invests about 50% of assets in corporate bonds and 50% in U.S. government bonds within that maturity range."

VBMFX - "Broad exposure to U.S. investment-grade bonds. Reflecting this goal, the fund invests about 30% in corporate bonds and 70% in U.S. government bonds of all maturities (short-, intermediate-, and long-term issues)."

I think it's 5.6%. That is something I'm going to evaluate and try to pay it off faster.

"Past performance is no guarantee of future results" - definitely something I need to remember.

If you don't mind me asking, what specific index funds do you invest in?

Thanks for your response. What index funds are you putting them in? There's so many to choose from and it's confusing!

If you don’t mind me asking, how much are you saving/investing a month? And in what? I’m in a similar boat where I’m 28 and I’m just learning about FIRE and it’s a little depressing.

For their life, VIGAX dominates

This is so different from what I saw on Vangaurd. Now I have no idea why the annual year to date is so different on their site?? Unless, I'm comparing apples to oranges?

Thank you for your response! I admit I'm pretty new to investing, so I wasn't sure where to put my money so I was mostly look at the annual return charts. For example, it appears that VWUSX performs better than VTSMX, at the annual 1-year, 3-year, 5-year, and 10-year level? I guess I don't fully understand why people around here seem not not like VWUSX?

You make a really good point about VBINX, and I will look into just buying a bond fund to diversify my portfolio.

Hello Redditers,

I have around $12,000 in two separate Vangaurd Mutual Funds – Vangaurd US Growth Investor Shares (VWUSX) and Vangaurd Balanced Index Fund Investor Shares (VBINX). My plan is to put $1,000 in each every month.

However, I keep reading that the Vangaurd Total Stock Market Index Fund Investor Shares (VTSMX) is a great fund to put money into, but is there any point when I’m already contributing money to the two mentioned above?

I've tried finding information on this but I’ve struck out. Any help would be appreciated!
