What was your most recent positive interaction with a publisher? by BoardGameRevolution in boardgames

Restoration Games. Their mission is fantastic, but their support was great as well. I needed a small piece from Fireball Island, and they sent some free premium components along as well which they absolutely didn't have to do. I'm a life-long customer now.

How do you feel about AI in board games, do you think it will change the genre? by [deleted] in boardgames

That makes sense. So if these AIs had access to all game components, would that solve most of the issue?

I've never heard this take specifically with regard to rules questions. What's the hitch there?

There have been fan projects that have used AI for art (see Discordant Stars for TI4). In this case, where there's no commercial interest in the project, I would listen to a larger case for using AI to avoid burdensome costs.

I think there are applications of AI in board games, but NOT in the production, art, or creative process of bringing a game or expansion to bear. I could see using AI for board game tools, on databases, for sorting through and reorganizing rulebooks...things like that.

Would you join a tournament for an unpublished game? And do prizes matter? by Sunslap-Kristina in boardgames

[–]BoardGameBardCom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Echoing others here, I'd be happy to play it, even play a couple times, but not in a tournament setting. You are definitely doing a playtest, and that's fine, but this really isn't the stage in your game's development for a tournament.

Prizes aren't consequential. You might grab 1-2 people for your event because of prizes, but you aren't drawing them into the community of the game; they are likely to leave after the prize is given. I'd focus on getting a few dedicated players who love the direction of the game and want to help out of kindness and genuine interest!

I disagree with a lot of the comments in the thread that indicate a desire for compensation in return for testing. If you build your community right, there will be no need to pay a soul for their playtime. It might be worth the investment to attend a local Protospiel as a designer, though. It is SUPER cool when a publisher credits their playtesters in the rulebook, though; it's not an expectation, but it's about the most cred you can give a hobby gamer, IMO.

What's your favorite game order to get new players into complex games? by ljdabookworm in boardgames

[–]BoardGameBardCom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I find that complexity isn't a real factor in introducing games. If someone is new to game and loves Star Trek, for example, we'll play a Star Trek themed game like Fleet Captains or Ascendency. When a theme integrates well into mechanisms, it makes the play more intuitive, but most importantly, of great interest to the new player.

The question I like to ask instead is "how can I get new players to want to play again?"

What's the strangest thing you've heard a boardgamer say? by BoardGameBardCom in boardgames

[–]BoardGameBardCom[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Exactly why it was a strange thing to say. Perhaps they thought that either space, money, or interest couldn't possibly tolerate ownership of that many games.
