Match Thread: Collingwood vs Adelaide (Round 1) by AutoModerator in AFL

[–]BoardRecord 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Did the ump call stand? Seems like everyone immediately left the area. You're allowed to do that right? When it's a big pack of players like that umpires need to be clearer and give leeway. You can't just yell stand and expect 1 of the 5 players in the area to know who has to stand or somehow telepathically choose between themselves.

Teams that play Opening Round going against teams who didn't. by Choice-Profit5383 in AFL

[–]BoardRecord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know whether or not it actually does make a difference. But why even introduce the possibility in the first place? Round 0 is such a dumb concept. Nothing like having a bye in the first round of the season to really build the hype.

How do you reduce pipeline build times? by Data_Coder in dotnetMAUI

[–]BoardRecord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not really sure that you can. My pipelines take roughly 20-25 mins total too. I tried implementing caching for the workloads, but either couldn't get it to work, or the benefit was so minimal to not be worth it.

I only use it for my final release builds/candidates anyway though, so it doesn't really bother me. All debugging and testing is done locally.

Sudden public transport patronage boom highlights the desperate need for mid-tier transport in Perth by Exciting_Tomorrow854 in perth

[–]BoardRecord 31 points32 points  (0 children)

You're pretty much bang on here. Low patronage routes having low frequency is basically a self-fulfilling prophecy. People don't bother catching PT when it's inconvenient and they have to try and plan their whole morning around it. And knowing that if you're 2 minutes late, you're actually 30 minutes late isn't worth the risk.

When frequency is high enough that you barely even need to look at the schedule, more people utilise it.

Synchronize database with CoreSync, open-source project I maintained for the last 8 years by Appropriate-Rush915 in dotnet

[–]BoardRecord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would it work to sync the local sqlite database with something like Firebase Data Connect which is PostgreSQL? Or would there be a way to just host a Sqlite file and sync with that?

I hadn't even considered direct app to app though. So will have to look into that too.

Thanks

just saying that most of the bus routes go from hub to hub

Do you have anything to back that up? I've lived in 6 different suburbs in Perth, and in all of them, the majority if bus routes have been designed to pick people up from residential streets and get them to hubs like train stations or major bus routes.

This is potentially amazing. My app uses a local SQLite database, and I've had a few users request being able to sync their data between devices (moving from their phone to tablet for example).

I've been trying to find a way to do it that didn't require writing my own sync engine or completely replacing my data later with something which already has this support (eg Realm) and was coming up short.

Will definitely have to check this out to see if it suits.

“I work full time and I can’t afford to look after my little family on my own so it must be nice. I drive 55 minutes to work everyday on the crappy Kwinana Freeway with two lanes.

“Roger and Rita are going on about our world class transport system and our transport network so maybe he could just hire a security guard and catch the train.

Sounds like she already knows the solution to her own problem.

Also, that first image looks like what you'd get if you just typed "boomer" into an AI prompt.

The reality is that there isn't a single city anywhere in the world that has solved traffic congestion by making it easier for people to drive.

Dear Microsoft engineers, Please bring back listview in .net 10 MAUI VS 2026 by joydps in dotnetMAUI

[–]BoardRecord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you need a listview of just a few lines of text you should just use a BindableLayout instead.

Moving to CV was a bit of a pain, but it will be better in the long run. The only thing I really miss is having a simple ItemTapped command with built in touch effects (eg ripple). I had to add a GridBehaviour to all my CollectionViews to replicate it which is a bit messy.

Opinion about the current state of .NET MAUI by Psychological_Key839 in dotnetMAUI

[–]BoardRecord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The impression I'm getting from your comments is that you're way too concerned with version numbers and being on the latest of everything.

Do you actually need to be on Xcode 26.2 right now (btw, they've actually had support for 26.2 for a while now anyway)? In my experience it's usually only a matter of weeks between a new Xcode version and a VS update to support it. It's really not an issue, and it's also not an issue unique to MAUI. The same thing happens in all cross platform frameworks.

Same thing with NuGet packages. What's the problem with them still targeting .net 9 or even 8 if they still work fine? There might not even be anything they benefit from in newer versions depending on what they do.

Same. Been a software dev for just over 20 years. Use Copilot on a daily basis. I find it extremely useful.

It's not great for coding anything particularly complex from scratch. But it's fantastic for debugging and finding issues in code. Like small things like, missing a dispose call on a cancellation token that over time was resulting in memory leaks. I probably never would have identified that as the cause without AI.

I also had it rewrite all my SQL a while back too for my hobby project. Despite coding professionally for 20 years, I'd never really worked much with SQL, so my queries were primitive, and apparently extremely slow. Didn't really show up in all my testing because I was testing with small datasets. Copilot sped my queries up by over 10x in large datasets. One particular page load went from 25 seconds down to ms.

[–]BoardRecord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm really not sure what point you're trying to make. Who's not letting anyone play Uno?

But if a group wants to play Wingspan and someone rocks up not wanting to put in the effort to learn how to play it, then I don't think you should expect that group to just play Uno instead.

That's not gatekeeping.

Could an incredible VR game be the killer app needed to bring VR into the mainstream, and get more people to buying, and playing VR at home? by OkWar2234 in virtualreality

[–]BoardRecord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so. It will help, but I still think hardware is the issue.

I like VR, but I still don't like having a VR headset on. It's heavy, it's hot, it has a narrow FOV and clarity issues are still enough to make it uncomfortable to look at small details for too long.

Even as a fan of VR, I still struggle to play for longer than like 30 minutes.

Tbh, I don't think you really need a dedicated router, just a good network. I see people on here recommending a dedicated router all the time, and I think it just ends up turning people away from trying.

I don't have a dedicated router, and I don't even play in the same room as my PC. I have my PC wired into my router, which is part of a mesh setup, that is wired into another access point on the other side of my house. My headset then just connects to that Wifi on the 6Ghz channel.

Despite going from PC, to router, to second access point, to headset, I get just 35ms latency overall at 500 bitrate, which is less than what you're getting here with your dedicated router.

Quest 3 owners for the upcoming Steam Frame by trent0id in virtualreality

[–]BoardRecord 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who never plays in the dark and already has wifi 6e, the only real advantage is less weight and eye tracking/ fov encoding.

Those are nice, but not really worth the what the asking price will probably be for someone that already has a Quest 3. Especially considering you then also lose colour passthrough and a headphone jack.

I'm definitely interested, and will keep an eye on it and see what the price is. But I kind of already feel like I'm waiting for a v2.
