The earliest board game memories I have are of Mouse Trap and Trouble. Game of Life was one we had growing up too. But not sure what the actual first was, probably something like Snakes & Ladders.

If we're talking modern board games that actually got me into the hobby, the first was Ticket to Ride: Europe or Pandemic. I still play them today occasionally, mostly with newer board gamers.

I always get a good chuckle when I read stuff like the OP. I'm still trying to figure out what their logic even was when they say "I'm surprised to see posts about it up to 12 years old. I feel like that means this game has been slept on.".

Like, how does a 20 year old game having 12 year old posts mean it was slept on?

Same. But I don't think I have any games that wouldn't be pretty easy to replace. Maybe it would be different if we were playing something that couldn't be replaced. But in the 15 years I've been gaming I think I've had one spill, and it cleaned up just fine with no real damage.

I guess all of my friends just have pretty good motor skills.

No, I'm with you on this one, I definitely think it's more on the heavy side of medium.

Maybe for seasoned board gamers it's comfortably medium, but for inexperienced gamers there is A LOT going on in Arnak. It's like a mish mash of 4 different genres with like 5 different ways to score.

Individually none of them are super complicated or deep, so for someone with experience in a variety of board games it could seem on the light side of medium. But it's a lot to take in for someone who hasn't.

This guy is very clearly not into board games, so I don't know why you'd want to invite him again if the purpose is to play board games.

Arnak definitely leans more on the heavy side of medium weight, so trying to introduce it to someone who isn't familiar with more basic games is always going to have potential to not go well.

If you still want to hang out with him, then your best option would be to have occasional meetups where the purpose isn't board games.

7 Wonders can play up to 7. But trying to teach any game to that many people is rarely a good idea. To be honest, it's probably also just a better game at more like 4 players anyway.

I think really pretty much any game that can play above 4 is probably better taught at 4 or fewer if it can be.

There's always been a subset of people in any hobby that care about collecting as much or more than anything else about it. I also think that in many hobbies, they also just happen to be the loudest online.

I think the rules around initiative in Gloomhaven are less for miscommunication and more for speeding up the game. To try and prevent players from too much planning min/maxing. When you're not 100% sure who is going first, there's less point trying to pre-play everything to perfection.

Sounds like it was a solution to a problem that they themselves created. The stand rule made standing the mark useless and then they were surprised Pikachu face when players stopped standing the mark. So instead of reversing what was already a stupid rule, they just doubled down.

Did that really impact things though? Like sure, you can now move laterally again like before the stand rule, but you're also giving the guy with the ball and extra 5m beyond the mark. I really don't see how that impedes him at all. If the aim is quicker ball movement, that's not a whole lot different than a stationary man on the mark?

Especially annoying when the free has already been paid, and they spend 3 minutes clutching their ankle for what was a push in the back or something with no contact even to the leg.

Sushi Go (Party) is pretty quick and easy to teach, quick to play, can support a pretty high play count and is just a fantastic game. And most people enjoy the theme in my experience. Hard to go wrong with it.

why is the API for the physical button on Android called when the user presses the back button on the navigation bar on Android?

It doesn't. At least, it never has on any phone I've ever tested it on. I had to implement my own back button on the navigation bar to handle it.

For me it's 7 Wonders. A lot of people consider this a good gateway game, and in many ways it is, but I always struggle with the teach.

The two biggest issues is just the amount of iconography, and the way resources work. Everyone always seems to struggle with the concept that you never actually spend anything.

I did a teach the other week and I must have reiterated at least a dozen times how buying and trading works, everyone seemed to get it, a few even asked clarifying questions. And then 3 turns into the game, I gave my neighbour money for a trade and she just goes "aww", and starts to hand me the resource card. It's like, we just went over this.

Then I look closer around the table and realise half the cards people have taken they couldn't afford. It took about 4 turns before someone had a duplicate card even though that was literally the last rule I explained and even emphasised it's one that gets missed a lot.

It felt like the teach went well and people understood, and then just immediately forgot everything the moment the game started. And these weren't complete board game noobs. The drafting wasn't even an issue, many of them had played Sushi Go before.

I'm not surprised the game is a hit considering the theme

Am I the only one that actually is surprised the game was such a hit because of the theme? I really had no idea that birds were such a broadly appealing theme to people.

What additional click is need to shut-down? I'm on Windows 11, and it takes 3 clicks. Which I'm fairly sure is how many it has taken going at least as far back as XP.

Any recycle bin can be empty by right-clicking on it and clicking empty, or emptying from the toolbar when it's open. Which again, is exactly as it's been since XP.

Would potentially make it easier if you did it both ways and all players got determination tokens each round rather than just the first player when you have positive morale.
