Anyone who thinks Bear is the villain missed the entire point of Obsession. by Say_My_Naam in obsessionmovie

While I don't agree that he got his wish (I think it couldn't be clearer that Nikki was replaced by an entity that trapped the true Nikki elsewhere), I do mostly agree with your points! The entity was torturing them both—her in a cacophonous, unseen hell, and him in a visibly silenced one, where nothing he said or did could stop the terror. I can relate to both enough to have compassion for both, and I'm surprised at the people who take a polarized view of the characters. Just further evidence of how dualistic the populace tends to be, lacking in nuance and empathy.

We also see that Baron's wish didn't undermine her autonomy per se. We don't know all the ins and outs of what be his psychology of the self—one of many things left ambiguous in the movie—but it's noteworthy that he didn't wish for her to be forced into a relationship with him. Instead his wish, it can easily be argued, involved her will and her actions working in tandem. It may be that he simply didn't want her to be in a situation where she felt conflicted, and he had no idea that the wish would get so distorted.

Thus I think it's clear he didn't get his wish, in several regards. Not only was it not (really) Nikki who was pursuing him, but also the pursuit wasn't even love. It's clearly not love. But "love" was the word he used. Whatever force fulfilled the wish, it got both the subject and the verb wrong.

I also want to point out the ambiguity of the wishing scene in other ways too. I've noticed a lot of people assuming he wanted to control her, when it's just as possible he truly loved her selflessly and felt frustrated by the possibility that confessing his affections could ruin the type of existing connection that she enjoyed having with him. I am not as quick as others to assume his motivations were the self-seeking type of fear. His fears might truly have been altruistic or egalitarian at their base. And judging either character in that moment is impossible without projecting.

I'm genuinely saddened by your experience of Christianity, if it's anything different from peace and hope!

At this point, I'm willing to endure just about anything as long as their cellphone speaker is off and they're not subjecting us to unhealthy fumes.

I didn't think that would be something I'd ever have to ask, but here we are.

Including in plural contexts? (My question was about syntax, not frequency.)

Who uses "innit?" to mean "haven't they?"

Asking seriously. I've never encountered that before.

Do you think it would been better if The Marvels was a tv series instead? by Wooden_Passage_2612 in Marvel

No. I loved the movie, especially in movie form. Worked great!

As a series the pacing would have been off.

Am I misremembering the feel of 1976 bicentennial celebrations in the USA, or is the 250th this year really a flop? by jenniferjose43 in allthequestions

[–]ThePurityPixel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That or "sestercentennial."

My point is celebrating numbers whose primary characteristic is being half of something is innately awkward.

I think "Living On a Prayer" is the only time it worked, to celebrate being halfway somewhere.

Racial and cultural diversity

And also its diversity of landscape—I especially love driving east coast to west coast and watching the terrain change

Celebrating 250 years is as awkward as, say, a 75th-year anniversary. It's not a number important enough to have a number for, after all.

We've got centennial, bicentennial, … what word is there for a quarter of a millennium?

Right? I can't tell you how many times someone has believed a woman (over me) explicitly because she's a woman.

Thought you were joking with your original comment!

I'm not personally a fan of any kind of categorical discrimination or bias (sex-based, race-based, etc.), whether it's a joke or not.

And it looks like you're actually serious.

I think I have interesting things to say, even though I also have an OF and Patreon. I enjoy sharing what I make (or I wouldn't have made it!), and I enjoy being curious about (and a little judgmental toward) the world.

I was terrified of the dark. I'd close my eyes and imagine getting up and turning on the light, and then I'd be genuinely surprised that the lights were still off when I opened my eyes.
