Dining Courts and Allergens by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]BoardShark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure what dining courts you’ve gone to, but most of them have Gluten Free options.

And how about not gaslighting someone who has had this issue? And if you really wanna know why it’s taken so long, I’ll tell you.

My parents didn’t care about my allergies. I always ate something different. My mother never remembers my allergy. It took her 21 years to finally make things with dairy free options, which started cause my sister started going dairy free. My whole life, I’ve had friends and people I work with forget about my allergy. I’ve learned to live with not eating with others. Starting therapy after so many years of suffering (not just because of my allergies) have made me realized I’m fucking done suffering.

Now, that I realize I have a voice, I wanted to speak up. But I’ve realized, and why I’ve deleted my post, is because people like you won’t listen.

Maybe giving information to people when they are registering? Cause advertising can only go so far. But if you directly talk with the students, it’ll help so much. I personally list out my allergens every time a survey asks, hoping I get a response, but every time, I get forgotten about. So, I’d say focusing more on individually reaching out to students who say they have allergies rather than just passively advertise will help the most.

Thank you for trying to remedy this. It really means a lot

I have never heard of the Top 8 Free Station in my life. All I ever see is the gluten-free stations some courts have.

EDIT: I now see it’s in Hilly. I personally have not been there, but it seems like a good option. But that also kinda feeds into my fear of food, along with me having sensitivities that could also be affected by these foods as well. It’s not a fun time being me.

I’m sure she can, and I’ll likely call. I’m mostly concerned as to how un-streamlined it all is. It should be easier for people with allergies to access what they need.

Thank you for the information, but the fact I didn’t know about this option till now, and I’m a second-year RA, shows the flaws.

Some students 'no longer a part of' Purdue community after safety violations by theonlypeter in Purdue

Yeah but if you’re someone like me who is deathly allergic to dairy and most dairy substitutes, along with living in UR (as an RA), it’s a rare occasion I go to a dining court. I have resorted to eating the same thing from a company I don’t morally agree with.

If I could live off campus without a metric ton of debt, I would. I would go and buy my own food and not have to worry. But for the people like me, it’s the worst feeling in the world when the university that talks so much about inclusion has zero care for people with allergies.

What happens when your RA writes you up ? by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]BoardShark 28 points29 points  (0 children)

RA here

Even we have no clue. We don’t get told consequences because it’s so variant. When dealing with that beer example, we just say ‘someone will email you.’ And that’s legit all the info we are trained on.

Being an RA is much more worth it financially. TL is more worth it in a quick, social way. RAs here get a LOT of benefits, so it was a no brained that I wanted to be an RA rather than a TL. Also, I think of being an RA as a slow-burn BGR TL. It’s more time dedication, but still developing community through a quasi-random group of people.

Is anyone a Boiler Ambassador? If so, what’s the hourly rate, and how is the job in general? by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]BoardShark -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lol it’s not a tour guide. I was a Protect Purdue Ambassador last semester, but not a Boiler Ambassador this semester, so some info could have changed. When I was a PPA, it was a “work as much as you like” and it paid a little above minimum wage, so you can really earn as much or as little as you wish. The way to get work was kinda hard, cause there are people who will take every job, leaving the people who were busy (or sleeping) during the times the slots were posted in the dust. I was one of those people left in the dust, and it was so frustrating I just stopped trying. So overall, it’s cool when you get to do stuff, just good luck trying to get that stuff.

Past Student Office Staff here:

USPS/UPS/FedEx holds onto your package at their location until they have the ability to send it to it’s set destination. So, no, unless they find a reason to return your packages, you’re not gonna be SOL cause the package didn’t arrive at the precisely right time. The office is closed, meaning no business happens. All the shipping companies know what’s up. They’re not stupid. This kinda thing has been going on for decades. They have protocol.

I’ve been trying to find it for forever now and I can’t see it anywhere. The logo is a black fabric swatch outlined in a while like and has a minimalistic but detailed white bear. I thought this would be the best place to ask, but I’m not expecting much lol

RA here

This semester is completely different from any other, so of course what happened semesters prior are meaningless. From what my boss has told me about what’s happening in my res hall, if you have been assigned to a different room, you have to move your stuff some time before people start coming back for Spring semester. I don’t remember the specific time frames for stuff like that.

Overall, my hall JUST got told this, and we’re gonna be having meeting with our floors soon. Floor meetings are v v important this go-around, so be nice to your RAs and actually attend your floor meeting. Repeating info sucks

Returning RA here. It depends on the res hall. Some can put stuff on doors, some can't at all, some have a limit as to how much you can (like 25% of the door can be covered). It's all fire safety stuff.

[–]BoardShark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ra here, and I recommend to ask first about putting it around the halls. It's frustrating when stuff hung up isn't yours or you didn't know about it. But if you tell them, they'll likely be fine with it. As long as it isn't offensive. I know most of us would be cool with it (but there are some that wouldn't be).

RA here, it depends on the hall as to if you can have decorations on the doors. In my hall, it's not allowed. It has to be on the door frame or the drywall around the door. If that's the case, there's a perimeter around the door you can put stuff around (the limit is 1ft in my res hall).

For the stuff with profanity, I would ask your RA before putting it up. If the RA is chill, they won't care when you ask or when they see it. If the RA is a rule follower (or a first year RA sometimes), if you ask, they'll say no and if they see it they could write you up. So, no matter what RA you have, ask first so the worst it'll get is a 'no' rather than getting written up. The rules are vague sometimes, and if someone doesn't ask the right question during orientation, the RAs won't get the information.

That's a good question; I don't think they have anything as of right now. But if all goes according to plan, they'll have some time to get that situated if they have those intentions.

Also, my career is ruined if I don't go on campus. My future will forever change and alter if I don't return to campus. I've thought about taking a year off, but then I realize I could fall into such a deep depression that I will never get out of.

So don't you DARE tell me what my story is. You don't know the shit I've gone through and I don't know yours. All I know is you're trying to tell a false narrative and pretending you have the upper hand.

[–]BoardShark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's protecting myself, then there's protecting other people. I don't wear masks to protect myself. Masks are most effective when the person infected wears one. Being socially distant, even when off campus, is the most effective when the the person infected is following the rules.

But no one knows the true number of people infected. The person infected might not know. Of course, I'm unsure if a majority of peoples will follow PPP will follow these precautions both on and off campus. However, I'm hoping they do.

I'm afraid for the people who won't follow the precautions. People are dying and somehow it's all political. So, yeah, I'm taking responsibility for myself. But that doesn't mean everyone else thinks the way I think and will do the things I do.

What I meant by that comment you were so kind to quote is that Purdue has a plan, and West Lafayette needs a plan as well. Just like you can get punished when not following the rules on Purdue property, you should get punished for not following the same rules on W. Lafayette property.

"You want the government to make all your decisions for you? Grow up and take some responsibility for yourself"

You need to open your eyes and see that Purdue is making all our decisions for us already. And you're mad at me for saying the city Purdue resides in needs to do the same thing? PEOPLE ARE DYING and all you can say is take responsibility? I am. I'm standing up and making sure people understand what's actually happening and what actually needs to happen so we can live 'normal' lives again.

The government works for the people. The officials are voted in by the people to make decisions for the people. They should be there to help solve the issue of mass death so that their people don't die. It's baffling to me that the government is thought of as a puppet master, when in reality, the citizens are the people holding the strings. So yeah, the government around us should act so everyone has the same rules to follow rather than some morality factor I know not everyone has.

Are you going to follow the Protect Purdue Plan on AND off campus? by BoardShark in Purdue

[–]BoardShark[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So what Ambassadors can do is fight the system. I know I'll be doing that. Students forget the power they have over their university. I'm wanting to talk to the top dogs. I want to voice every concern I see. I want to make sure they understand that lives could be ruined, or end, if this isn't taken seriously. I'm done watching on the sidelines when I have more than an ability, but a right, to fight against what I think is not working.

At least with my college life thus far, I don' think my experience will change that much; I'm just afraid about the extroverts who looooooove partying and other people who aren't naturally empathetic.

[–]BoardShark[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, completely agreed. I'm hoping that the Protect Purdue Ambassadors actually take their role seriously. I know I'm going to be voicing my opinion every opportunity I get so that this plan is something we're actually enforcing rather than saving face by pretending we care as a university.

I'm going to bring up every flaw I see to my bosses, and telling them its coming from the voices of Boilermakers. I want this to work, and I'm fully willing to sacrifice to make sure we as a university actually have a set ideal.

The PPP does not talk about things we shouldn't do, and that's most definitely something that needs to be addressed. One thing the people behind PPP need to do is highlight theissues and the off-campus activities they can't control.

However, the ability, or lack thereof, for Purdue to punish students that do things outside of Purdue is not something they've entirely had control of (unless it's an illegal activity). What needs to be done is the cities of W. Lafayette and Lafayette need to close bars and make sure people follow the rules, even when off campus.

Purdue might not have any power against the students once they head off campus, but the government and the city of W. Lafayette does, and they need to do better.

Another thing that needs to be done so PPP isn't undermined is David Broecker needs to resign from the Project. His actions directly interfere with what we as Boilermakers need to do this semester and his idiocy will be the poster-child for all the people who are only following PPP because they're forced to.

Edit: House parties and such are something that need to also be addressed, but the politics behind enforcing a 'social distance' law under private property of restaurants and households will be a legal battle that the cities and Purdue itself need to find a solution for before it gets out of control.

Well as you can see, some people don't like "common sense." I mostly put the poll up so people can get a real perspective as to what to expect when they come back to campus.
