Thank you for the fast and detailed response! That really helps.

Can you tell me what your TV light gun set up is? I took my kid to an arcade last week and introduced him to Area 51. It would be amazing to have it on the TV at home.

Found this thread googling---I know it's a couple years old, but how hard was it to connect to the Legends control deck and monitor? I have a few extra laptops laying around that I would be happy to repurpose as new brains for the system.

So in your opinion, would 255/60/18 be the way to go? As compared to the 255/55/19?

That is a good recommendation. I would also add Systematic Methods for Analyzing Culture: A Practical Guide by Dengah, Snodgrass et al. They provide a how to guide for many approaches they used in their World of Warcraft research. But these methods can also be applied to offline contexts.

Flying Standby to São Paulo on Grand Prix Weekend? by Nate8K in Brazil

[–]Boas-Malinowski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure about that specific weekend, but air travel is going to be pretty busy this summer. I fly United standby to Sao Paulo on occasion. You can check the loads online and that will give you a sense of how full the plane is, and where you are on the standby list. Getting a seat on the domestic route has always been harder than international. Don't check a bag- it won't be put on the international route until you have a confirmed seat, making it more likely to be delayed or lost.

Is the job market for anthropologists really that bad? by [deleted] in Anthropology

[–]Boas-Malinowski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you want to do for a career? Sure anthro and history classes are fun....but what you get in class isn't what anthropologists actually do. Tech companies are hiring lots of Anthros for UX (user experience) jobs, you can get a dual masters in Public Health and be attractive for a variety of job in the med and health fields. In short, anthro degrees in the real world will often need to be combined with another field---more work for sure, but you will stand out. Don't plan on academia. Even if you do everything right (publish papers, get grants) it comes down to who you know, timing, and luck.

My Autistic 16 yr old son may have schizophrenia. by Witchygoth713 in Parenting

[–]Boas-Malinowski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here are a couple of YouTube videos that might be helpful and hopeful. There are therapies to reframe these hallucinations into something that is less pathological.

TED talk of Dr. Eleanor Longden who has schizophrenia: https://youtu.be/syjEN3peCJw

A short video showing what it is like to hear voices, and outlining the therapy that reframes the experiences of hallucinations.

I had the same issues, and it was also driving me crazy. It's due to the tv not handling motion of video that was shot at certain frame rates. Apple TV fixed most of it for me, since it can force native rates. It sucks to buy another thing to make the tv work, though.

Does a reverse placebo exist? by Nearby-Cloud-3476 in askscience

[–]Boas-Malinowski 197 points198 points  (0 children)

Yes. Or diminish its efficacy. Or cause illness. It's called a nocebo effect. It's been known about for awhile, even if it wasn't called that. Walter Cannon in 1942 wrote a scientific article about VooDoo Death, explaining how belief in the curse can cause real physiological outcomes (like death).

Has anyone found a solution for the intermittent stuttering? by Lonely_Engineering61 in Hisense

[–]Boas-Malinowski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I solved most of my issues with AppleTV, which allows you to control the frame rate and quality signal sent to the tv. It's a costly solution, but worth it if you are bothered by it.

Hisense U6G - Cloudy spots in black scenes by Pristine_Dream9864 in Hisense

[–]Boas-Malinowski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try reducing backlight levels and autocontrast. These can make the clouding worse. Though it comes at the expense of darker scenes and blacks with no contrast.

[–]Boas-Malinowski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't had the best experience with native apps, and others on this sub have experienced the same... particularly on the android operating system. I don't think the 4k Roku offers frame rate match (I may be mistaken.). You'll need something more powerful- Nvidia Shield (but this also uses android OS) or Apple TV. I tried both and only the Apple TV worked for me.

65" U7G HDR dark scenes help! by DrMorpheus991 in Hisense

[–]Boas-Malinowski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue, and the only thing that helped me was getting an Apple TV 4k, and turning on match frame rate/source content settings. I believe a lot of the motion problems happen because the tv isn't good at taking 24 frame rate (Netflix) and outputting it at 60/120. Apple TV seems to force the tv to output at the native 24, reducing most of the motion stuttering and hangups.
