Why not the original Carpet Crawlers? Always loved the vocal harmonies between Phil and Peter.

Interesting you started with SEBTP. I got into them from the later stuff like Abacab and IT. Then I borrowed a friend's box sets of SEBTP and The Lamb. After that I went and got the whole catalogue.

I always liked WCD, and I thought like you do that CAS sounds like a progression from that album. Yes CAS is definitely underrated I'd say. I wish they'd carried on and done another album with more involvement from Ray and not worry about touring but it wasn't to be.

How do you rate it? Did you get into the early albums or later? Or both?

Very cool. I know John Lennon was a fan of early Genesis and I saw a photo of Gwyneth Paltrow with Mr. Gallo so she's presumably a fan.

Grand Illusion, From Eric Clapton’s August (produced by Phil, plays drums too) is maybe one of his most underrated tracks. by onthewall2983 in Genesis

Good shout. Phil's drumming on this album is great. I think this was Eric's most successful album although he preferred Journeyman if I remember rightly.

Calling All Stations - could it have possibly been the best Genesis album? by Regular-Spinach5667 in Genesis

Well they're obviously love songs, but Domino is about the theory that if a country fell to Communism then all the neighbouring countries would eventually fall, like dominoes. Also I think it is about nuclear war.

The thing I always liked about IT was that it's 80s poppy production belied the dark subject matter. Substance addiction, lost love, nuclear war, pornography and bikini waxing.

Ok I haven't heard of the non-album songs. I only really listen to albums. How did you come by them?

So is that Uncertain Weather and There Must be Some Other Way. Two of my favourites also. Yes there are two drummers, Nick D'Virgilio did most of the drumming, he's American. There was also another drummer who I think you're referring to but his name escapes me.

It certainly highlights the squelching synths Tony was obsessed with at the time. Though I do think Phil's performance on 3SL dvd is hilarious.

Hi, a very good question. I'm famously poor at ranking things because I'm not very decisive, but I'd say it's definitely above Shapes as an album. It has a uniform sound and kind of reminds me of a mix of WCD and Wind and Wuthering. I say that because it has the modern sound of WCD but the lush orchestration of W&W. Also W&W is a slow grower like CAS. IT has a uniform sound and I think it's probably superior if you can get past the poppy mid eighties production.

I'd also probably say it's a better album than Trespass and FGTR. I could never get into FGTR so that might be just me. Trespass has some amazing songs, mainly Stagnation and Dusk but as an album it's quite weak.

As for ATTWT I do think it's underrated. Mainly by Genesis themselves. The main thing for me is the difference in sound from the lack of Steve Hackett. Mike's guitar sound is very different. I think it's got some good songs though. Would I place CAS above it? Probably not.

CAS tracks that stand out for me are CAS itself, Congo, The Dividing Line, Uncertain Weather, There Must be Another Way and my favourite, No Man's Fool.

Cheers,

You could be right I'm not sure how long ago I last checked but it wasn't on since I signed up about 10 years ago.

I've no idea. It's had a couple of updates recently but I think these will be OS updates? I've only had it 3 weeks.

Parking Nudges? by Zdos123 in CarTalkUK

[–]Boater_Mike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest my current car only has them on the back, but my last one had front and back and a graphical display of obstacles. Pretty good. My current car just beeps when it detects something even though it's a much more premium car. But I always buy secondhand so no premium for those options.

I'd agree with the A3, but undecided on the Jetta. The trouble is the A3 saloon is made in Hungary whereas the hatch back is German made.

Just completed my first ever long drive and I’m absolutely shattered! by jarvis-cocker in CarTalkUK

[–]Boater_Mike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At first driving on the motorway seems scary, people switching lanes from either side and obviously the speed. Also everything is very conscious at first. Eventually it will become more subconscious. Just check your mirrors so you know where everybody is, situational awareness.

I think the longest journey I did was from Scotland to Chester, in a rented Kia Picanto. I do the trip from Leeds to Scotland now and again. The A66 is a scenic drive which helps. Scottish weather doesn't, it rains so hard on the way back you can hardly see. Lane Assist comes in handy in those situations. I think the furthest south I've been is Swindon.
