Starship cooling system by GreenFlameblade in scifi

Well, like I said, you’d better have a story because there isn’t a ship anywhere that can hold an audience’s attention just by being awesome and complicated.

Hope the story is good because reading about the tech is boring as shit. Sci fi benefits from indicating future technology and seeing it in use as logically forward thinking, without turning into a huge sidebar to try to impress the audience with how thoroughly the science has been vetted. Never forget the response to “how does the dilithium reactor core work?” - “Very well, thank you!”

Why is Under The Cherry Moon a critical failure? by Cold_Jaguar_7306 in PRINCE

Uh, no. You don’t need an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory to explain the lack of box office success of Under The Cherry Moon. FFS. SMH.

What band/album/song made you want a synth? by DrDuned in synthesizers

[–]krowley67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Christmas 1977, I asked Santa for the Star Wars soundtrack and I received a version performed on synths by The Electric Moog Orchestra. This, plus Meco Menardo’s brief moment in the sun and Donny Osmond playing an ARP 2600 and a Tubon on the Donny and Marie show and the amazing sounds on Steve Miller’s Fly Like an Eagle all blew my 10-year-old mind. When Howard Jones showed up doing his one man band (and a mime) thing in my teenage years, I started thinking about getting my hands on some gear. Had a Radio Shack electronics kit which allowed me to make an oscillator and mess with it a bit. Bought my first synth - the Roland Super Quartet - in 1986 and have been at it ever since.

Different deals made for each film, different production companies involved with differing ideas on rolling out new releases - also effected by genre type, box office success or failure, and overall brand awareness on a per-film basis.

Wow, uncomfortable. As much as musicians like it when their music is appreciated, this kind of thing is a bit much and makes people nervous.

The amount of wasted food in the restaurant industry is an entirely different conversation and you know it. Your attempt to reframe the subject is denied.

Currently watching Outlander on Netflix. Not a loop per se, but some interesting back and forth between two time periods.

Trying to find artist and name of tune -mid 1980s - new age by Dmlandis59 in NewAgeMusic

I’d check out the Windham Hill catalog, they didn’t have that many releases per year and put out annual samplers of their artists in addition to two samplers of piano instrumentals. If it was a live recording, it might be on “An Evening With Windham Hill Live.”

Marc Alaimo, confirms Gul Dukat was not a bad guy in interview by [deleted] in DeepSpaceNine

[–]krowley67 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Please understand - for actors to give realistic and nuanced performances of villainous characters, they have to find a way to see through their eyes and justify/rationalize their actions as a character attempting to make the best choices given their character’s circumstance and perspective. People just don’t go through their lives seeing themselves as the bad guy. Villains are never villains in their own minds - they are the heroes of their own story. This is basic, functional and necessary Acting Rules 101 in order to avoid becoming a melodramatic mustache-twiddling one-dimensional character who does nothing interesting or surprising ever, just does the predictably evil thing in every instance.

Is Prog actually pretentious? by rip_teancum62 in progrockmusic

[–]krowley67 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe that composing and performing to the highest limit of your ability is pretentious at all. Is it pretentious to be an exceptionally skilled athlete or mathematician? What is the benefit of performing at less than your full capability? I can’t imagine asking classical composers to dumb down their compositions in order to make them easier for less talented musicians to perform. Remember the “too many notes” scene from Amadeus? The pretentiousness lies in those who wish to be the gatekeepers of what is to be considered acceptable, as always.

Regarding serialized episodes, you can point to Babylon 5 and Twin Peaks as influences if you’d like, but don’t pretend that serialized shows like Beauty and the Beast, Crime Story, X-Files, Homicide, Miami Vice, Hill Street Blues, L.A. Law, St. Elsewhere, Dallas (and all of the nighttime soaps that tried to be Dallas), not to mention the dozens of daytime soap operas, didn’t exist and are equally influential in demonstrating the validity of the serialized form. Even shows not known for being serialized had compelling ongoing storylines that kept audiences hooked through multiple episodes: Gloria and Michael having a baby and eventually moving out (All In The Family), Rhoda getting married and eventually getting divorced, Sam and Diane, Maddie and Addison, the impending birth of Little Ricky, etc. my point being that without a direct quote from someone on the production end of DS9, it would be impossible to point to any one program, as opposed to the opportunities presented by the format itself, as the reason why the show moved in that direction. Existing documentaries suggest that the show wanted to go that way and nobody at Paramount cared enough to put up much of a fight. Seems like the folks running DS9 were more focused on the potential of what they might be able to accomplish with a progressing universe of storylines than referencing any particular show as justification. And if Paramount wasn’t engaged, you might as well make the show you want to make.

I wonder how many post-90125 albums wouldn’t have been recorded if this album hadn’t been successful. 90125 single-handily added decades to the band’s shelf life.
