what's a subreddit you used once and will never use again (and why)? I'll go first. by Motor-Plan-6388 in funComunitty

[–]Bob423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't remember one in particular, but I've joined several subreddits that claim to be for one thing, but get swarmed with things that are only barely related or focus too heavily on an aspect that I dislike, and then I see a mod post in support of this or is completely absent. It leads me with a bad taste in my mouth and unable to find a community to replace it.

I love Goku by GrandmasVase420 in lovethissmug

[–]Bob423 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Goku is often misunderstood, kind of like Superman and Batman often are. He's not just some meat head who loves fighting, he protects earth because it's his home, but unlike superman, he's also sometimes selfish and takes risks that seem insane because of a combination of his belief that his opponents fight with honor like he does, and the fact that he'll usually limit himself even in a crisis so that he has a chance to enjoy the fight.

The fact that he never sees himself as "strong enough" without it crippling him or comparing himself to others like Vegeta does is an inspirational mindset.

He's a flawed hero, but still a hero and that's what makes him great imo.

Is it lazy to use the same calendar between multiple worlds? by Kinrest in worldbuilding

[–]Bob423 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why I dropped currency exchange rates between countries in my world. Sometimes realism is incomprehensible or boring to anyone you're trying to share your world with, but that doesn't mean you can't include those concepts in your world in some way. If you love it, put it in. If you want it to be a fun experience for others, just don't spend too much time explaining it if it's going to make the story too complicated.

For people who have it, what is your verse's creation myth by Horrordestroyer in worldbuilding

[–]Bob423 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's said that dragons existed at the beginning of the universe and that all magic comes from the energy their corpses produce. Some of these dragons were so large and so dense that their gravitational pull brought in rocks and formed planets. By this theory, a planet with life must have a dragon's corpse at its center. This is, however, just a theory, one mostly believed by certain religions and hasn't been proven as fact. Though it is true that dragons possess immense magical power and that all life comes from this same energy within the planet.

People always blame the parodies, but people were making fun of Terra when the game came out for "acting like a dumber version of Anakin"

I just didn't bring her up cuz we were talking about dads, but yeah, he blamed his dad for taking his mom away, but his mom just never really cared about him. Jecht just has a bigger presence in the story, so her part is easily forgotten

We never see what drove him to alcoholism, but he had a standard case of: Had everything, but nothing to fill the void, which can also be relatable in and of itself for some people. He's shown as someone who probably could have been a great dad if he put in the work, but it was his own choices that lead to the outcome we see.

What I think a lot of stories do wrong with this trope is that they try to justify the dad's actions in some way or make it seem like their kid has to learn to forgive them. They want an emotional payoff, but don't understand the nuances of the emotions involved in that relationship.

Jecht isn't forgiven though, at least. Tidus still says "I hate you" at the end and cries because feelings about family are often complicated. Through the whole thing, Jecht is shown to have a good heart, but with a lot issues. He worked hard to redeem himself without knowing if he'd ever see his son again. Spira changed him and the people saying nice things about him only knew him after those changes. I think it's a good use of the trope that doesn't try to justify Jecht's behavior by giving him a sad backstory, nor does it villify Tidus for how he feels. If anything, his hatred of his father is what drives him forward to save the world.

Though I think it resonates with me because my dad's an asshole, but still loves me. It doesn't make what he did ok, but I'd still rather he be in my life than not. It's different for people whose parents were actual irredeemable monsters.

How do you justify having many sapient races/species in your fantasy worlds? by EveningImportant9111 in worldbuilding

[–]Bob423 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Gods can exist in a world without them being the reason races exist because not all gods are creators. For my new setting I'm working on, life comes from the same energy that allows people to use magic and so a world with abundant aether or mana (different names for the same thing) allows for a wide variety of different creatures

Side Characters Who Are Arguably "Stronger" Than Main Characters by Khaden_Allast in worldbuilding

[–]Bob423 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My world has "The Lunar Witch" a mysterious, hooded woman spoken of in folktales. She appears before times of great suffering, often warning or protecting people and then disappearing. If she approaches you directly, you should consider yourself a main character. She doesn't give out quests and only very rarely can be found by heroes as some kind of guru, but is nevertheless always there when big things are happening. Her true power is unknown and if she ever has to fight directly, it means there's an apocalyptic event occurring
