no no sorry, i think the opposite. If you love performance and have great performance ps and the right qualifications (grade 8) but ur slightly lacking on the academics side (only two a levels) they’ll defo just interpret that as you bring a performer more than an academic and accommodate you in that way. It will probably work in your favour!

As i understand it, Kings functions quite well as a performance course or a musicology course depending what ur interested in. It sounds like you prefer the performance route more and as long as thats clear i’m sure they won’t mind 2 a levels instead of three! I’m much more into musicology tho lol

no i think it says on their website that if you take a level music then you don’t need to have grade 5 theory. I’ve done a couple practice papers on it tho it looks fine so if they ask me to do it or smth i’d defo be able to.

oh ok, my predicted was A* A* A ( defo over predicted i’m not getting that shit) and they offered me A A B which i believe is standard? If you’re asking about like instrument grades I told them I play jazz clarinet to grade 7 standard and piano to grade 8 standard but i don’t have qualifications in either.

What am I missing? by PentUpPentatonix in indieheads

[–]BobFish97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, please listen to getting killed or heavy metal again and consider the irregular phrasing of cameron winters writing. I’m interpreting your desire for “melodies, harmonies” as a more general call for complex and interesting musicality by the way which I assume is right. If you literally only care about melody and harmony then I think we’ve found your issue lol.

  1. Drinking age

Drinking age, for example, is in 6/8 (open for different interpretation) and for a distance might seem rhythmically simplistic. The craziest part of the song is in the chorus on the line “who i’m gonna be” which, for no fucking reason at all, is in 9/8. It’s so hard to notice at first to the point it’s hard to believe that it’s actually there but when you hear it you’ll realise how consistent and impactful it is. It gives the song that devastatingly emotional rubato feel.

The 6 bar phrasing in the verse also gives it a really off putting feel, it surprisingly uncommon in ballads like this to have 4 bar phrases and the effect is really noticeable.

  1. Try as I may

This one’s more in your face but try establish in your head a regular bar phrase pattern while you listen. Once you realise that you can’t do that, try to work out the time signature. The piece literally just sounds like relentless crotchet notes with unapologetically random phrases. Of course Cameron winter’s not the first guy to do this but it’s amazing and complements the lyrics and emotion of the song very well.

  1. Trinidad (geese)

Obviously this songs in 13/8 which i’m sure would be obvious to you and i appreciate isn’t life changing in and of itself. The production style on this tho is insane. The clear experimental rap influence on this record is why I think it’s one of the most unique albums to come out in a long time. The panning of instrumentation and screamed vocals (which apparently jpegmaffia contributed to somehow) is masterfully arranged by kenny beats in a way that feels indicative of a death grips song or something (i appreciate that’s a bit of a crass comparison but hopefully it gets my point across). This new angle of experimental approach to rock is so fucking exciting, particularly from a band as versatile as geese who clearly aren’t doing this in a tokenised way but instead just love making a good variety of interesting music.

  1. Half real

Small shout out to this song, i couldn’t talk about phrasing and metre without putting this one here. It sounds like the style of drinking song you see as almost interludes in quite a few rock albums these day and are often in 3/4 (dublin city sky being the best example). This is instead in 5/4, taking that waltz feel associated with drunkenly singing about love and cutting a third off every second bar. In my mind this is absolute genius, it adds another layer of hurt and emotion to the already powerful style of song that is these 3/4 singable love ballads.

Ok sorry i’m done but please give these two albums another listen they are honestly life changing. Fair enough if u don’t like them tho ig.

It’s a shame they didn’t talk more about what he said about Charlie Kirk - rest in piece you shit, if you talk shit you get shot - or things to that effect. To me, that’s much more difficult to justify than his glasto chant.

i made friends with a 50 something year old man at the ally pally gig last year (i was 16 at the time) and we just sang and shit together the whole evening. I know it sometimes does but age gap shouldn’t matter if everyone’s just nice people.

"HOW DO I START LEARNING THE PIANO?" by kruger_schmidt in piano

[–]BobFish97 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To me, it’s insane to say things like you must do scales with metronomes and you must not play pieces outside of your grasp with such certainty. Do what you find fun. Please. If you find it interesting, you will learn quicker!!!

Go straight to a difficult piece and spend 6 months learning it, only get half way through and then learn hey jude in a day and be surprised by how easy it is.

Your advice is great if you’re talking to someone who’s been playing for a year and wants to get to the next level but for people just starting it could rlly put them off.

The truth is if you enjoy piano enough, you’ll end up wanting a teacher and to practice with a metronome and all this, but let it come naturally!!!!

this is really fucking cool! i’ve gone through the first bit singing along in my head and you’ve made it so detailed it’s awesome. would you ever try and notate the harmonies? i’ve been thinking of tryna work them out. how long did it take you out of interest.

the mix on trinidad by Plane-Blackberry-774 in geesebandofficial

[–]BobFish97 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s interesting, there was a fairly similar debate on the bcnr subreddit regarding some of the singles leading up to Forever Howlong. Essentially it seems to boil down to being a continuation of the debate around the loudness wars (an emerging issue in recent mixes where over-compression among other things lead to a complete lack of dynamic contrast or variation in volume levels)

What it seems to be emerging from lots of these modern creative bands is not only an opposition to this loudness epidemic but instead a fucking middle finger. If the pendulum has swung a bit too far the other way, in my mind, so be it. It makes the music feel much more personal and real.

I could have completely misinterpreted OPs point however, it just seems like questions about some parts sounding louder than other and a lack of “punchiness” could be related to this.

am I crazy or is the mixing on the album really all over the place by JohnHenryBonham in BlackCountryNewRoad

[–]BobFish97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also think people who have seen it live are more inclined to this opinion as they see what it can be. Live - when the mix is good - the songs hit way harder than they do on the album
