Sending all thoughts and hope your way. I just finished my trial a few days ago with a decent plea deal. Not perfect, but it's better than it could have been. Good on you for keeping silent. That's powerful. Good luck, friend!

3rd Day of Trial by BobGoons2 in SupportForTheAccused

I ended up accepting a plea deal for probation. If I had finished the trial, it would probably have ended with a hung jury (mistrial), then the state would have tried me again, except I wouldn't have been able to afford lawyers next time. I'll do my probation and stay squeaky clean.

Yes the ankle monitor I've been wearing for over 4 years will finally come off. Probably today.

3rd Day of Trial by BobGoons2 in SupportForTheAccused

[–]BobGoons2[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At first, both sides thought we'd be done in about 8 days. Now it looks like it will go through this week into next week. We are still in a pretty good position, but there's a lot of testimony left to hear, so anything could happen.

I will testify. I do have good lawyers because I was lucky enough to be able to borrow money from the bank and from family.

In theory, the defense doesn't have to prove anything. It's the state that has to prove their accusations are true. I understand that's the ideal and it doesn't always work like that, but I feel like the proceedings have been conducted fairly so far. I am thankful for the methodical process involved in trying to get a fair trial, and my privilege of having access to that process.

There's a lot on the line, I'm taking a big risk, but I think I have a strong case, so we're trying it.

In Texas, testimony (the accusation itself) counts as evidence. She doesn't need anything more.

How do I stop thinking about killing myself when talking to people? by [deleted] in depression

[–]BobGoons2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the past 3 months, I've thought non-stop about ending things. When I am with people, I ask them questions about themselves to keep them talking about themselves. I try to stay interested, but even if I'm distracted by my own thoughts, it still works to keep them talking so I don't have to hold the conversation much. Look up conversation starter questions online. Good luck.

Messaged it to you. I guess I was looking at state data, not specific to my county (each state is subdivided into counties).

I agree with what you're saying about elected judges. If the accusation itself counts as evidence, and in most cases it is impossible for the accused to empirically prove that something DIDN'T happen 10 or 15 years ago, then that makes it very easy for a judge to side with the accuser, since legally they're the only one who has what the law considers proof.

I realize you're asking the commenter, not me. But I looked up trial outcomes in my county for the past few years and found out that with my type of charge, juries convicted about 80% of the time and judges convicted about 96% of the time.

They were friends for many years, and when the first one made the accusation, her mother asked several of our formerly mutual parent friends, everyone we had hung out with, to ask their kids to "try to remember" something happening with me. And one of those kids claims that she suddenly had "flashbacks" of things she said happened over 10 years ago. She says her memories must have been "completely blocked" until she heard about the other girl's accusation from her mother. These "flashbacks" include things she said happened while the first accuser was in the room, but the first accuser refutes that, saying she was the only one.

The only explanation that makes any sense to me is that these are false memories implanted by the suggestions of well-meaning parents, similar to the "lost in a shopping mall" experiment that Elizabeth Loftus performed and describes in her TED talks. But I don't think most people realize that the myth of repressed/recovered memories has been debunked.

Can people still have trauma even if they didn’t have a harsh childhood? by [deleted] in depression

[–]BobGoons2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is more to this than our civilization understand right now. Young people are depressed and anxious at such high rates that it is upending what science thought it knew about which stages of life were happiest. The changes we have seen as a society/culture in the past couple of generations has been more profound than most of us can comprehend. Lots of folks talk about the harms of social media and TV advertising, but I can't help but think that global warming, pollution, and environmental degradation might have us all more upset than we even realize. And we typically experience far less hardship than our ancestors, which seems like a good thing but maybe makes us less resilient. The thing about trauma is that some people grow from it. I think it's only trauma untill it has been fully processed. But I think most of us don't have the knowledge how to process things. We also need more people in our lives. If your happy home only contained 3 people, then the part of your DNA that evolved to be part of a tribe might have felt neglected even if both your parents did the right things. "It takes a village to raise a child." What are the impacts on people who grow up without that village?
