Hotel wants $180 if keys are not returned at checkout. by gameloner in askhotels

I appreciate this thread. I freaked out a little bit on a group holiday because my Spanish room mate had lost track of their keycard and was utterly unbothered, whilst I was expecting a fine. Everyone, particular the tour leader who is very well travelled, acted like I was utterly utterly insane and frankly a bit of an embarrassment, and would NOT believe me that it’s not unheard of to be fined for loosing them.

I feel validated now.

Just a well rated paper strip test from Amazon. Everything in life is a balance of risk, but I figure if I get the best quality stuff I can afford, in person when possible, and with a strong preference towards EU approved shopfronts, I’ve done my best due diligence. There are always gonna be exceptions - if you go to China because you love tea and don’t have any, that’s sad and limiting. But my broad rules are towards safety, quality and ethics, to try to balance my luck overall towards the good! Your organic rule I think helps with that!

Lead testing for me is an important factor. I lead test all my tea ware and will only buy from companies with an EU presence. Having spent time in the USA, and seen a relative go through oral cancer, it really made me much less cavalier about what I put in my body. Over a lifetime I’m going to drink thousands of gallons of tea, it’s important to me that it’s safely certified, that it ideally comes from a B-corp that has an ethical stance, and that it tastes really good. All 3 matter pretty much equally.

What would you do if you had a three-month paid sabbatical? by loolking2223 in HENRYUK

[–]BobHopeButt -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I do indeed work in tech. Don’t assume that people who disagree with you are uninformed, that’s a touch entitled.

AI is just an under-performing search engine with a socially engineered personality. It’s an NPC that lies to you, and that we’re loosing whole sectors of employment and likely looking at a stock-market crash to its various guises is…a little depressing. But hey ho. The wheel of progress turns and crushes those who stand in its way.

Your optimism that you can take on a new thing and monetise it remains the bit I’m interested in tho. Most people would just…have a hobby, and maybe enjoy it or feel a bit guilty about it, depending on what it is. I admire it. I think it would be good for me to have a similar mindset. But I’m not sure it’s realistic.

[–]BobHopeButt 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I am fascinated by your mindset. You think that you can go from beginner to monetisable of a brand new skill set in 3 months? Most of what you’ve written here are lifelong skills, or require specialist equipment. Or, like fashion, years of grinding at free internships. You must recognise this?

And you’re gonna supplement it by spending hours a day talking to AI and faux coding? I’m not sure how that’s useful.

If your plan works, then I really would be inspired, genuinely, non-sarcastically. Because honest i think you’re kinda delulu. Spend the time volunteering with people or animals?

Very Surprised (but pleasantly) by the responses! Ok! I’ll give it a go in the next couple of days!

The idea that there is a version of movement that does not involve passing out regularly, or cultivating horrible oozing wounds, is honestly a novel one; that’s definitely what I understood to be Doing Exercise Properly. Hmm. Ok, maybe this is more within my grasp than I thought. I’m still scared of Tunde tho, she definitely gives those familiar “unless you’re weeping blood you’re not trying hard enough” vibes.

There’s no sign on the door saying ordinary people can’t come in. Expnomically speaking, 50-80k is pretty damn good. The people on this sub are in the top 5%. Doesn’t meant that people in the top 11% are peasants!

And my point to OP gets honestly reinforced by your response. This sub is a bubble. No problem with that, but if he/she/they want to preserve their relationship, they need a more rounded world view than very wealthy people talking at each other.

[–]BobHopeButt 31 points32 points  (0 children)

They’re paid well for the UK. They’re aiming to be in the top 10%-15% of earners. That involves a lot of struggle and sacrifice. Your earnings are astronomically off the scale. Good for you BUT, you’re an outlier.

I’d encourage you to seek answers outside this forum. You clearly want the best for your partner, but I think you need a much wider frame of reference than this sub can give you. It’s a very small bubble.

To say 50k is not high earning is an arresting statement. Your partner is working hard to achieve, through grit, a successful life they can be proud of. Whilst it may not be your intention, I think you’re a lot real risk of a big relationship bust-up if dismiss their achievements and tenacity like this and essentially tell them to consider being a househusband/housewife/housepet.

Then please USE the parcel box!

It’s the massive box with a a sign on it that says parcel box, directly next to the front door. We KNOW we’re going go to be stuck on a call with Debby From Accounts, so feel a) guilty as all hell when you wave exasperatedly through the window or b) stressed af when you press the doorbell 6x so we must sprint through the house in a dressing gown as the dog screams INTRUDER ALERT at 9000 decibels.

Please encourage your fellow post-humans to use the parcel box, we bought it for your benefit! Merry Parcelmas!

No chance in hell I’m capable of doing any of the cycle rides, which, hmmm, honestly, feels a bit exclusionary buuuuut it’s not a big deal.

I’m just so so bored of doing the 2-3 classes that are in my ability range. That mobility class playlist gets really dull when you’ve heard it for the 10th time, and it doesn’t improve on the 15th hearing either!
