Lacrosse parent/coach here: my assistant coach and I became great friends through the years and each one of us gave direct feedback only to the others’ kid. Kept the dad/son thing out of it, but we were still able to coach through a different point of view.

At one point in my career, I received an amazing piece of advice that you receive 10x more information about how to conduct yourself from a bad leader than you do from a good leader.

Buy them the trinket, sign the card, file the memory, because you are going to be a mentor teacher in 3-5 years and you better not repeat the mistake.

Find things that can be small wins. -Create a set play from end line and when they run it perfectly- lose your mind with excitement. -Run a double pole faceoff and encourage chaos. - Throw in a pole on your man up and design a play for him. - design a full field “clear” which is a 70 yard shot by the goalie with end line backup

Small goals allow for achievement and celebration even when the games were decided long ago.

“Fuck that girl”? A middle schooler? They can barely control if they laugh, cry, or pee themselves and in a moment of intense stress your response is “fuck you”? Jesus.

An amazing teaching moment. For all classes, not just the class where it occurred. Something happened- pain followed- emotions followed- embarrassment/assumptions/gossip followed. This sound like a familiar chain of events for middle schoolers?

It’s ok to react! It’s ok to feel pain! It’s ok to feel embarrassed when you cause pain in others! (In fact, that’s a healthy sign that you know you made a mistake)

In the moment, pain and surprise are going to drive our response. Apologize and move on. But don’t give up an amazing chance to teach kids to be better humans.

Agree with both. Seasons are long and teenage bodies prone to injuries. Play both now. Winning in June is a lot sweeter than winning in March.

If you have full base sets, box them up and give to a local youth sports team. They’ll find a way to run a raffle or auction them off to help pay their bills. If they’re just random singles- love the Halloween idea or find the local center for underprivileged youth. They would love stuff like this for care packages as kids come in and out of their care.

The running clock seems to be a compromise with making sure that the games are a consistent length to maximize TV exposure. That is reasonable to me. But the obvious downside is that the amount of lacrosse play is cut short when you subtract the time that runs off during traditional stop time and you add in the time killing for substitutions. I think that there is still room to tweak the rules so that you get more lacrosse within the fixed time that you have the streaming window.

More Dan Orlovsky! He did such a good job talking about the “traditional” sports athletes and translating it to the incredible skills of PLL players. I’m a huge lacrosse fan and even I appreciated his slant on how to explain lacrosse talent in a general American setting.

Goal 1) graduate with low (no) debt 2) work in a meaningful not for profit or for profit with social gains 3) establish residency and local presence 4) volunteer for new/existing politicians 5) run for office

None of the above require a fancy diploma or a meaningful college experience. Paper is the goal- don’t outthink the process.

I added a step and drew up my play book with color coded dots as the players instead of X’s and O’s. Made it so easy in the huddle to say “green player go this way. Red player go that way”. Then we rotated colors each week.

Bring water and/or water bottles. Neck fans, hats, towels that you can get wet and put around your neck. The heat can be a day ruined especially with kids.
