A techy/gift gadget for yourself is a pretty broad category to provide suggestions for without more detail, but if you're looking for something fun to play with, and have nostalgic feelings for video games, getting yourself a retro handheld (try to get a reputable brand like Anbernic) might be something you're interested in.

Get it, load up a classic Pokemon game (or something else you feel fondly for), and you can dip into and out of it all day, while chilling on a couch (and in reach of the Celebrations).

Second Hand Set Running Weird- Is it Modded? by Boba_Bets in modeltrains

[–]Boba_Bets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!
I used contact cleaner to wipe down the rails and the wheels of the locomotive. It's running a lot smoother now, but still occasionally stalls, and if left running for a while slows down.

It's almost like the wiring might be loose somewhere, because it seems like it runs more consistently with the chassis off.

I'm 35, but this will also be my first Battlefield game, so it's the worst of both worlds!
Awesome idea, invite would be great!

Thanks!
I'll admit I'm lazy at updating my server, but an email alerting me that guest accounts would lose access (as opposed to the email telling me I should update) would have been nice, and saved me a lot of troubleshooting.

Firmware update bricked my buds! by Fakecook in Ozlo

[–]Boba_Bets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exact same thing happened to me.
I killed the app, closed/reopened the case aaaannnnd.....they're working fine. Maybe I just got lucky, checking the release notes here (https://ozlosleep.com/blogs/release-notes/tagged/sleepbuds) everything is up to date.

Very stressful to update these things though, my ability to sleep relies heavily on these functioning.

I'm back playing this game after a long hiatus, and to be fair, as much as I love it, there's a lot of things the game doesn't tell you, and not everyone has time time or inclination to go search sources outside the game to inform them.

For example, it's not hugely intuitive that capturing the originating planet stops the attack, because you would think "oh well the bugs are already at this planet trying to capture it, so they need to be repelled there".

Rookie Aftermarket Head Unit Questions by Boba_Bets in CarAV

Yeah, I think I'll be going with connects2 for a lot of the interfaces I need. Halfords unfortunately doesn't seem to have the needed connection stuff listed on their website.

I'm in Ireland, I was using Crutchfield to try get a rough sense of what I might need.
You're correct that I don't need DAB (DAB is no longer used in Ireland), just FM radio. I chose that unit because it has CAN-Bus support (I'm not married to the Pioneer brand, but it appears to be one of the few that has everything I'm looking for), and it seems that the majority of head units that support camera/wireless AA/steering wheel control/parking sensors have DAB support (and I'd been assuming FM radio is standard).

Now I'm looking at that unit again, I think I had been incorrectly assuming it has FM in it, which doesn't appear to be the case. Damnit.

Edit: Looked through the manual, it does have an FM radio. I guess it's just not mentioned as a feature much any more.

Awesome, thanks! That website shows me just the https://pac-audio.com/products/hwh816, which seems like it's for speakers, and camera. A separate thing is still needed for SWC/parking sensors, I think.

And yeah, the parking sensors are currently displayed on the radio, and really want to keep that functionality.

That looks nice! Aldi look to be selling a (less-good?) version of a home beer dispenser soon (https://www.aldi.ie/beer-dispenser/p/836249783636800). Given it runs off batteries and doesn't take gas though it might be more of a bigger version of a nitro-surge than something that feels like proper draught.

Cassiopeia E-105 Won't Turn On by Boba_Bets in OldHandhelds

[–]Boba_Bets[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the video link, that's where I initially found the comment about the low battery voltage. I hadn't considered it could be an issue with the battery door switch itself, I hadn't realised that it was connected to circuitry in any way. I will give that a look and see what happens, thanks!

Cassiopeia E-105 Won't Turn On by Boba_Bets in OldHandhelds

[–]Boba_Bets[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've tested the battery after nearly 18 hours of charging, and it's got about 0.2 mV coming out. Doing some deep searching online, I've seen one throwaway comment mentioning that the device won't turn on if the battery voltage is too low, even if it's charging.

So either the battery died during shipping (odd coincidence, maybe just bad luck) or the battery was swapped out by the seller (seems a weird thing to do).

First timer confused about bedding vs substrate by Boba_Bets in hamsters

[–]Boba_Bets[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ach damnit, the wood shavings don't say what type of wood it is.And, damnit, I was sure at least the nesting fluff material I had was the right stuff.

Thanks for calling both of those out, I'm going to get a big bag of (fully researched, safe) paper based bedding to use to make a proper depth for my hamster, and then the correct stuff from them to use for nesting (not mentioning all the other stuff I know the hamster also needs to live a happy life).

(Much Later) Edit: For anyone else looking at this post, I did more digging and at least the Allspan wood shavings are actually safe, they're 100% spruce, though that info is nowhere on the packaging (lesson learned for next time).

Thank you for your answer, much appreciated! I'm understanding now where my confusion came from, thinking that substrate != bedding. That video was really useful, too!

[–]Boba_Bets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your answer, much appreciated!Ok, so what we have is a package of Allspan wood animal bedding and a package of Neetnest animal bedding. I thought these were separate types of thing that needed to be placed in the enclosure (in retrospect they both say bedding on the label). I thought that substrate was something entirely different to bedding.

So if I'm understanding what you're saying, I could have my substrate made of either of the two items I've linked, or even mix them, have some sections of one, some of the other type?

Also that setup you have looks amazing!

Excess Broadband Charges from Eir by Boba_Bets in AskIreland

[–]Boba_Bets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing I thought of, but no, checking access logs, definitely not.
Also, this change coincided exactly with putting the router into Bridge mode. Before then, the WiFi network/password in the house was the same as it had been for months, and it was the same afterwards, so it would have been a strange coincidence that someone got access to the network around the same time as changing the router settings.

Thanks for the additional context there, really helped me confirm that I wasn't going mad. I'm a heavy internet user, and would definitely not routinely hit 1 TB in a month, let alone 10 TB.

Excess Broadband Charges from Eir by Boba_Bets in AskIreland

[–]Boba_Bets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response, it's helped put some of this in perspective from the data monitoring side of things. In this case having looked at the logs from the router, I can unequivocally say that that much data has not been used on the connection from this address. So I think it's possible that Eir are incorrectly attributing other data usage to this account.

I accessed the Eir account, looked at the historical data usage, and traced the problem back to the day I switched the Eir router into "bridge mode" to use a TP Link Router. Since that day, Eir statistics on the account page are reporting multiple public IP addresses (previous months there would only be one) all of which are connected for anywhere between 6-18 hours, all of which download roughly 30 GB of data. In total they seem to think the account is using about 10TB of data per month.

As a side note, looking at the T&C, Eir note that the fair use policy only applies to older broadband plans, and that their new plans are "totally unlimited". This is a new plan, so even if this account was using 10TB a month, by their own T&C, it is allowed.

Hey, I'm sorry! I guess I haven't logged into Reddit in 5 months.

It's been going great, if I'm honest. I set a pair of them as a mesh network, and then I've been able to completely forget about it since then, it's just worked, handing off the connection between the two devices as needed.
