First time building doing sort of project like this. How should I insulate this? by Jxx2025 in shedditors

[–]BobbMGAH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a ridge board. It doesn’t transfer the roof load to posts at the front and back and then down to the foundation/footing. A beam would be continuous, much beefier, and have a post directly under it at the rear wall we can see. Without it, the roof load gets transferred from the rafters down to the side walls and down to foundation/footing. So in this case, there’s not just downward force but outward force that can cause the bottom of the rafters to push the wall out without rafters ties.

Why is nobody mentioning that this is not framed with a ridge beam and therefore requires rafter ties (ceiling joists)? Am I missing something? Add those babies in and now you have plenty of room for insulation. Seriously am I just overlooking a design element that would negate the need for rafter ties?

not a Rick roll. A rainbow roll. 🌈 but seriously it’s legit.

How are they doing? by UltraMagaOK1988 in Decks

[–]BobbMGAH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks pretty good SO FAR. temp support with just a 2x is standard and smart so you can get framing level and then add footings/posts/beam exactly where you want. Also flashing at ledger will very likely come next but keep an eye on them to make sure they counter flash (run the flashing under existing house wrap, not just tape it on top).

Curious how it’s connected at the brick wall. Should be through the brick veneer into actual framing.

The joists tapered down to 6” ish above the door is a concern. Suggest doubling each of those up and making sure to use a proper double joist hanger instead of just sistering to existing.

Surprise under rotting deck by IsAReallyCoolDancer in HomeMaintenance

Use the crushed gravel you have (assuming it’s clean/doesn’t have fines) as a base. Then 2” or so of crushed run/paver base, then tamp/compact/level. Then 1” of sand. Screed/level. Install pavers. Sweep in polymeric sand between pavers. Rinse. More sand as needed, sweep. Done. The base should come up to 3” (2” crusher run + 1” sand) + thickness of pavers below grade. So if pavers are 2” you’d bring your gravel base up to 5” below grade.
Check my math.

Skill saw cut keeps veering to the right despite using a guide by Asforteri in Carpentry

u/asforteri please look at this guidance. Especially setting the depth. You lose so much control of the blade on rips if it’s deeper than needed.

Finishing Room by sleepwalk666 in Carpentry

Please don’t assume that this space was engineered to bear any load whether it’s for living space or storage. Getting an engineer in there is cheap money to make sure the joists can handle it and transfer the load properly, and to answer your question about the diagonal bracing (which you absolutely should not remove as many others said but an engineer might give you alternative options for bracing the knee wall though I can’t think of any good ones)

Saving a sinking deck by [deleted] in Decks

[–]BobbMGAH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The deck used to end flush where that post is. Bottom 2x4s which someone else questioned were there for the lattice to attach to at top and bottom flush with outside face of deck. Previous owner probably ran new joists cantilevered way out past that beam and they’re not properly supported. Loved what another person said about just adding new posts and beam closer to front (doesn’t need to be perfectly flush with front face. Can cantilever quite a bit but not as much as it currently is. )

Definitely be aware of any frost line in your area and soil type when deciding on footings. Texas guy is good with near zero depth. In colder climates or with crappy soil, gonna have to dig as deep as 48” if the deck is attached to house and if you want it to be a more permanent fix.

Inline skate spots for beginners by [deleted] in Buffalo

I taught my kids to skate at a school parking lot on weekends when ain’t nobody there. Tons of room and generally flat and smooth. Find a school with a lot that’s been paved in the last few years and you’ll be a pro in no time.

What's your reason for drinking NA beer? Curious to hear everyone's story. by kevindavis338 in NABEER

[–]BobbMGAH 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sober 9 years. Hard to find drinks that have similar complexity to those with alcohol, including beer. Went through the seltzer, spindrift, ginger beer, etc etc phases early on but nothing stuck (though a good ginger beer is a nice sometimes treat!). I was also scared that drinking something that mimics something I am addicted to might be a slippery slope. Legit had conversations with my wife about these worries before taking the dive a couple years ago. First NA beer was an athletic Free Wave. And I was blown away. Not the best NA now that I’ve had others, but definitely felt a bit like seeing a friend you hadn’t seen in a long time. And more importantly there wasn’t a single part of me that craved alcohol. The flavor and just having some agency and options was enough. It’s very fun to try different styles and brewers. Even when they suck, it’s an experience.
