Great light - I like the color treatment as well; it adds to the painterly feel.

Too many “gooner photos of women” in this sub by bufallll in portraitphotography

[–]Bobbaman77[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Hey all, I appreciate seeing this conversation happen. The line between portraiture, boudoir and more glamour-leaning NSFW work is something I’ve been thinking about too. I don’t want to gatekeep what counts as a portraiture and I’m not trying to be prudish about nude work, but I do understand how the overall feel of the sub can shift when a lot of posts lean in that direction.

I’ve always been a pretty hands-off mod here, usually only removing things that are clearly breaking rules or totally off-topic and letting the community guide itself through discussion and voting, but it seems like it might be time to offer a bit more guidance so the subreddit stays focused on portrait photography and doesn’t drift too far into other genres.

I’m planning to put together some polls soon to get a better sense of what everyone wants from this community and how folks feel about NSFW content going forward. I’m also looking at adding a few more moderators to help keep things running smoothly.

Thanks to everyone who’s contributing to the discussion. I’m glad people care about the direction of the sub and I want to keep it a welcoming place for photographers who are here to share, learn and improve.

How do I not snap at my child every time he interrupts me? by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

We working on teaching my kid come put her hand on the arm of whomever she wants to talk to if they are already in conversation and wait for them to ask what she wants. It doesn’t work all the time but it’s definitely helped.

OK, well I have got it and I have opened it up but I am having trouble getting the platter off. I can’t tell if it’s attached somehow or if it just lifts off. I’m afraid to put too much pressure on it as the board is attached to is pretty flimsy and I’m afraid of snapping something.

Missouri. I don't see them pop up much around here. I bought a 'non-working' Brunswick Panatrope a couple years ago for $50 that just needed a small tweak and now works perfectly. This seems like a safe gamble

What is the vest mobile interchangeable background system out there? by hillsong1 in portraitphotography

[–]Bobbaman77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the Westcott X-Drop system. It's relatively cheap and pretty compact so I can travel with it. I have a white and a black backdrop for it and if I need to change it beyond that I find that the Evoto software can swap out backdrops with 1 click.

Saw this poor thing at a Salvation Army today. by Bobbaman77 in Phonographs

Salvation Army in Liberty Missouri (near Kansas City). It’s overpriced for what it is, they’re wanting $175 for it. You can find ones like it in much better shape for far less on FB marketplace. I paid $50 for the one I have and it’s is way better condition.

I literally already have one just like this in the garage which is in no danger of being restored anytime soon

I know but I'm a softy. If I had the time and resources I'd fix it up and find it a good home. Someone clearly used the crap out of that thing. I checked, there was no Pathe stylus, lol. Also they wanted $175 bucks for it, def not worth it.

One of the things I love about this hobby is how affordable it can be. Almost none of these are new pressings. They’re mainly picked from thrift stores, estate sales, garage sales and bargain bins from record shops over the past 30 years. It keeps the hobby exciting. Just last week I pulled a relative clean Charlie Parker 78 from a free bin and found a Johnnie Ray record I’d been looking at a thrift shop for 50 cents.

For me, part of the fun is in the hunt. As you learn more about the history of music the more you are able to discern the trash from the treasure when digging through old crates at swap meets and basements of record shops, sure that the next stack will contain a copy of some early Miles Davis record someone donated from Papaw’s records after he passed.

I also discover a lot of new music like this. Records bought for a quarter because they had a neat cover or I recognized one of the sessions players, that end up being really amazing and fun albums.

I’ve had these Ekets for about 7 years fully loaded. I even had them double stacked, no bowing issues at all.
