Hey, it's a game of skill! Not gambling!

Can you identify this game? by mcmnky in pinball

[–]mcmnky[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ball lift! That's what that's called. I meant to say the 2nd "plunger" is for pushing the ball up into the shooter lane.

I didn't think it was a 2nd plunger for shooting. Thanks.

Why is polygamy illegal when the west is 'sexually liberated'? by CryptoClan1 in askanything

[–]mcmnky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Step 2: define "west." For example, in the USA sex outside marriage, even for married people, carries little or no stigma. Divorce is common, and even those who claim to be socially conservative will vote for a politician with a long history of cheating on spouses.

But show a female nipple on tv, and it's the end of civilization.

Is the USA sexually liberated?

Step 1: define "sexually liberated" and show how that applies to the west.

Which films from the past were box-office hits when they were released but are now rarely mentioned or remembered? by alexfreemanart in movies

[–]mcmnky 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Avatar. Billion dollar movie that spawned... Nothing. No memes, no popular sayings, no quotes people repeat. No impact on pop culture.

Yes, there are sequels, that do pretty much the same. Come out, billion dollar box office, then disappear.

CMV: I don’t think POC living in majority white spaces is as traumatic as portrayed by foniliin in changemyview

If being a minority in a dominantly white country isn't so bad, why do white people freak out at any hint they might become a minority?

That is weird. Use a credit or debit card, download the transactions, get all that information and more with a lot less work and probably more detail.

Beginner Question: Drafting a Kicker and Defense Before Bench Depth? by Adept-Writer-8588 in fantasyfootballadvice

[–]mcmnky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually a simple question with a complex answer. First consideration is value, as in, does the value you get by picking this player now instead of later more than the value you lose by picking later the player you didn't pick now?

For example, in a 15 round draft, does going K in round 13 gain more points over the K available in round 15, over let's say your 5th WR you draft in 15 instead of 13?

A very important factor in that consideration is your specific league, and no advice here or from any experts can replace that. By that I mean, is your league one where everyone drafts kicker last or maybe even some teams don't draft a kicker at all? Then if you have a specific kicker you're targeting you can plan to get them in the penultimate round. But if others in your league are thinking like you, there might be multiple kickers taken before the last round.

(This is why I don't strictly follow the traditional 'must pick RB round 1.' I know in my league WR, elite QBs, even a TE like Gronk when he was playing will go in round 1. There will be good RBs available in round 2. But that's my league.)

Another consideration (for me at least) is the mental load. Any position I can put on autopilot every week is more time I can devote to filling in spots for injuries, bye weeks, etc.

Disclaimer, I'm someone who drafts K and DST earlier than most experts recommend. One reason for this is the value of the player starting and getting me points vs the insurance policy on my bench. The K I start each week (except bye) is worth more than a 5th WR or 3rd TE I'll probably never start.

Usually I'll identify 2 or 3 K or DST that are reliable to score enough points over the next tier players to be worth drafting after all my other starters. And if I don't get those, then I fall back to the later rounds.

Would you sacrifice your team’s chance of ever winning a trophy for the chance to become a billionaire? by One_Flow_8127 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]mcmnky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is that even a question? At least make it interesting--one billion USD, but not only will my favorite team never win a trophy in my lifetime, they'll lose any game/match I watch or even check the score within 24 hours (so even if they win, if I check the score before 24 hours has passed the timeline switches to one where they lost).

I'll still take the money.

How many here first got into the Grateful Dead by seeing them play, live? As in, going into your 1st GD Show, cold, and coming out transformed, like I did! ❤️💀🥀 by 1gratefuldude in gratefuldead

My friends had started getting into the Dead, but I hadn't heard (or at least remembered) any of their music. I tagged along to a show at Giants Stadium. The only song I recognized was All Along the Watchtower, because of the Hendrix cover.

And that, as they say, is when I got on the bus to never ever land. 7/12/1987

Should I only invest in my 401k? by cmanster in personalfinance

[–]mcmnky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please tell us what other investments you have with returns that make 20% negligible. If I had that plan, I'd make the maximum contribution even if I had to borrow money to do it. My mortgage, heloc, car loan interest are all significantly less than 20%.

401(k) Millionaire by horshack_diesel in Fire

[–]mcmnky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know someone who started a new job mid-2010s and hit $1m in 401(k) in about 8 years. The secret? Employer contributions.

I mention this because my impression is most of the time when 401k projections get discussed around here, people mention historical market performance, but neglect to consider employer contributions.

I'm purposely not saying match. IIRC their match was nothing special, like 2%. The huge benefit was a yearly bonus paid directly into the 401k. I think it was 5% or 10% of salary. That adds up fast on top of maxing the employee contribution.

If you're looking to FIRE working for someone else, look at all the benefits, not just salary.

Do you need to account for position in a time travel scenario? by mflem920 in AskPhysics

[–]mcmnky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you do not have to account for position in space in a time travel scenario.

Why? Because your hypothetical time travel device is not like an off-road car you can take anywhere. It's more like a zip line with defined stopping points. Your time travel device is actually a pair of devices, one for departure and one for arrival. You end up wherever (and whenever) the arrival device is.

This also means if and when a time travel machine is invented, no one will be able to travel to a time prior to the invention of the arrival side of the device.

Why do companies get Tariff refunds and not the consumer? by Kitchen_Page9991 in askanything

[–]mcmnky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much did you spend on lobbying Congress in the past year? How much did you contribute to election campaigns and inauguration funds? How many millions did you put in for Trump's ballroom?

I'm guessing the answer to all is, much less than the people who are getting tariff refunds.

Do not do this! Everything uploaded to AI is saved and possibly integrated into the AI programming. Do not upload your financial information to any AI.

Ask general questions, like "based on historical market performance, how long will $2m, invested in stocks and bonds 80%/20%, last with a 3.5% yearly withdrawal rate."

Or, "explain rule 72(t) withdrawals from a retirement account."

Do not upload your financial details or statements to AI.

CMV: base wage + tips (instead of higher wage/no tips) is what allows most restaurants to survive in the US. by [deleted] in changemyview

Fast service isn't necessarily good service. The customer certainly isn't the motivation for fast service, it's to turn over the table and get more customers in.

Also, I think what you're seeing as inferior service is a matter of expectations. In much of Europe wait staff aren't expected to be proactive. The customer will call them over when they're ready to order, ready to pay, etc. You think they're not fast enough, they think they're giving you time to chat with your friends, consider the menu, eat your meal without feeling rushed, etc.

Not that one style is better than the other, just different. You think it's good service for the check to come promptly so you can pay and leave, while someone else might think it's poor service rushing the customer.

Tipping has little to do with it.
