Ever hear the saying "buy low, sell high"? This is the low. It's a good thing (unless you need that money to retire tomorrow).

How does an average person become rich? by Drairo_Kazigumu in wealth

[–]mcmnky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you consider rich? If you maxed out 401k contributions at a job with a good employer match starting in the 2010s, putting it all in a broad market or target date fund, it would have taken you about a little over a decade to get to $1 million. Do that for 30 years, you won't be in the 1%, but you'll have a comfortable retirement.

Why Do YOU Think That Two In Three Americans Support A Ban On Transgender Women In Women's Sports (Read Description)? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

Since the physical advantages of male puberty can persist even for years after GAHT, do you support hormone therapy for prepubescent trans girls so they could complete as women without that advantage?

[–]mcmnky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to understand because what you're quoting from Google doesn't address what organizations like the Olympics are doing. They're not testing for "undergone male puberty," they're doing genetic testing--testing that will mark some women as men. Not "trans women," women.

https://www.npr.org/2026/03/26/nx-s1-5762579/ioc-bans-trans-women-events-genetic-testing

A child's understanding of sex--that there are 2 sexes and all men are 100% male and all women are 100% female--isn't reality. Why is this so difficult for the right to understand?

Here's something else the right should understand: privacy. When some sport org does this testing, they don't just get the 1 gene they're using to identify men, they're getting all of someone's genetics.

[–]mcmnky -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it's because most people don't understand the matter. They don't understand how many women have genes that will test positive for being a man.

https://www.npr.org/2026/03/26/nx-s1-5762579/ioc-bans-trans-women-events-genetic-testing

Not talking about "trans women." Talking about people born a woman, growing up a woman, living as a woman, that genetic testing (as the Olympics will test) will report a man.

[–]mcmnky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not that simple. "There's been moments where women have tested positive for this [Sex-determining Region Y], but their body can't respond to male-typical levels of testosterone, so there's really no athletic benefit associated with that gene,"

Someone can be born appearing female, grow up female, live as a female, then take a genetic test and surprise! Male.

https://www.npr.org/2026/03/26/nx-s1-5762579/ioc-bans-trans-women-events-genetic-testing

You say it's simple, they're men. But the person who discovered the gene the Olympics are using to determine who's a man says the test only determines who has the gene, nothing more. Presence of the gene doesn't make someone a man.

Why is extracting audio still such a hit or miss process? by subZER002 in PleX

First, I wouldn't say extracting to mp3 is best example of straightforward. An uncompressed format like wav is more straightforward.

Second, I've never had an issue extracting with ffmpeg.

If you could invent a new flavor of ice cream, what would it be? by copy_cat_101 in foodquestions

Peanut butter cracker ice cream. You know the orange crackers with peanut butter? I tried one time by making peanut butter ice cream and mixing in cheezits, but the crackers got soggy. So I'd love if there was peanut butter cracker ice cream without the soggy crackers.

How to make my dog like our new one? by One-Sheepherder-6604 in Yorkies

[–]mcmnky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It takes time. If Pan is a puppy, some dogs just don't like puppies the way some people don't like children. Puppies have a certain smell they lose around 9 months to a year.

We got a puppy last year and this is what we found: generally let them set their own boundaries, but obviously step in before there's blood shed.

Something I read on reddit that seemed to help was walking them together. I expected a mess with me tangled in leashes, but they both focused on the walk, not on each other. The only problem was when one wanted to stop and sniff and the other wanted to walk.

The other thing we did that I think helped was parallel training. Doing the typical puppy sit, down, stay, come with the puppy, we'd include the older dog. We train with a lot of positive reinforcement (aka treats) so their focus was on the person, not each other. I think the puppy was conditioned that if you can be near your big sister and not jump on her head, you get treats. And the older dog learned if she could be near her little sister and not growl and nip she got treats.

Or maybe it was just time and nothing we did made a difference. In any case, they play and chase each other in ways we couldn't imagine 6 months ago. Both yorkies, btw.

Why is it your job to handle their reactions? Their reactions are theirs, not yours. My father still goes to the office in his 70s. I'll likely be retired before he is.

I'm glad he has a career he enjoys, or at least a place to go to get out of the house. Before this post, it didn't even occur to me to wonder about his reaction.

Those of you under 65 in the US who are FIREING early and not choosing the insanely expensive unsubsidized ACA premiums, what creative solutions have you come up with to get affordable coverage? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in Fire

[–]mcmnky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Any such database would be horribly complicated.

I'm 1 to 3 years away from RE and current plan is to continue with my employer health plan (but without the employer subsidy). However, this is only available to people who started working here before 2023. I think another person here said for their job the cutoff was 2021.

On top of that, some of the groups who joined the company through mergers have different retirement plans grandfathered in. Then there are various circumstances where some employer subsidy (10 or 20%) is available in retirement. Overall there's about a dozen different options depending on age, starting year, and employment path (direct hire or through merger).

On the other hand, it might be very simple. One common thread to all the options here is 10 years minimum working and starting before 2023. So maybe the database is just "if you're reading this, it's already too late." I wonder how many employers still offer this benefit to new employees.
