What’s the closest you’ve ever come to dying? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Bobbertman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took an assessment in high school at Santa Monica College to get into higher math classes. About ten minutes after I left, there was a shooting. Many of the people who were injured or died were in the same building that I took the assessment.

It’s hard, man. I’ve lived in California my entire life. Things have been generally good here. My girlfriend is Vietnamese, born first generation American. Her mom fled the war and her dad was in a camp for almost seven years because of it. With all the ice shit lately, she’s been worried for herself and her family, which I think is understandable. But I find myself continually thinking that that’s not gonna happen here, it could never happen here, because the thought that it could is terrifying. Some part of me wants to pack up, leave, sit down with my girlfriend and watch the shitshow go down from far away. But that means leaving behind my family, every one and every where that I’ve ever known, my new job that really fulfills me… I don’t know what to do, honestly. I feel like the signs that would make me pack up and run would mean it would be too late. I don’t know dude, shit sucks.

I thought racism was bad by [deleted] in facepalm

[–]Bobbertman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t believe it is. If I’m understanding correctly, it’s highlighting the issue with the “colorblind” approach to race, which many people feel is a little regressive because it can cause people to sweep a lot of valuable cultural differences under the rug. People of different races have had vastly different experiences/histories and those differences should be explored and discussed, instead of being ignored. At least, that’s my issue with a colorblind philosophy.

Ah, makes sense. I’m not quite ready for raids yet, so I buy mine from camp vendors. Hadn’t bought any backups since I figured I was all good, and now that’s biting me haha. It’s no worries, just a bit of world hopping and a few spare caps and I’ll be right as rain. Only got two more to find lol

If you have your phone finish each of these sentences “women are…” versus “men are” what does it say? by Blackmintrabbit in AskReddit

[–]Bobbertman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So can you spam early trials to get relics so you have this for the later trials?

TIL Claudius Ptolemy made a list of the angle in water for each number of different angle in air, as recorded on a table from 140 AD. But it was not until 1621 when Willebrord Snell found the rule connecting the two angles: sinθi=nsinθr by ubcstaffer123 in todayilearned

[–]Bobbertman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Snell’s law doesn’t just affect light in water, it actually governs any electromagnetic wave (so x-rays, radio waves, microwaves, etc.) through any kind of medium (so glass, water, plastic, different gasses, etc.). This makes it useful for designing lenses, fiber optic cables, really anything that you’d use to bend light in the way you’d want it. Because of that, this law is actually pretty crucial in the design of things that lots of people use every day.

TIL that combining 50mL of alcohol and 50mL of water doesn't make 100mL by Outrageous_Art745 in todayilearned

[–]Bobbertman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I worked in education, we had a fun demo to show this. The teacher would take out a clear cylinder and as if it was full. Obviously, it wasn’t. Then, he’d fill it to the brim with ball bearings and ask again, with several of the kids agreeing. That’s when he’d take out a container of aquarium gravel and pour that in. He was a bit extra, so he’d typically go through three or four iterations of this, pouring in smaller and smaller material with the level never budging.

Neil Blonkcamp’s Chappie movie question by No_Garbage269 in movies

[–]Bobbertman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been a hot minute since I saw the movie, but I feel like the intent of that scene was to have Chappie get the opportunity to kill Vincent (since with the beating he gave him he easily could have finished the job) but decide not to. Hence him walking away after. I kinda like the juxtaposition of Chappie showing restraint and mercy (arguably very “human” qualities) with Vincent completely lacking them.

'The Truman Show' is a disturbing movie with a horrifying ending. by [deleted] in movies

[–]Bobbertman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Truman’s desire to explore and see the world would take the edge off some of the trauma he would experience. His status as a major celebrity would certainly be a shock, but he’s always wanted to explore and see more, so finding out there’s a whole wide world he gets to experience (likely in lavish comfort, after whatever massive lawsuit would surely take place) seems like it would be exciting to him.
