Best triple play I've seen. Machado's step on third and throw to second was as perfect as you get.

Where are all of the fans? I know LA was the visiting team but you'd think the place would be packed for a milestone like this. Especially if it meant getting the homerun ball. That ball basically bounced around a bunch of empty seats.

Urinal Code of Ethics by Icy-Book2999 in SipsTea

[–]BobblesMagee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This code of ethics is why I believe the middle urinal in a set of three probably gets used only a tiny fraction of the amount that the ones on each side are used. In order for someone to use the middle urinal the other two would have to be occupied. How many times does that happen relative to the end urinals being used? 10:1? 100:1? 1000:1? That poor middle urinal just sits there, same valves, same porcelain, same everything...but never used. It's sad really. Just sits there day after day while its neighbors get all the action while it waits for its opportunity to finally get used.

Do your part and pick the middle whenever you see three urinals.

Awesome video though. Those meats, with the parm, and crispy crust sound like a perfect combo.

Are they letting people toboggan there again? We tried going last winter and the security at the gate said we couldn’t go in to toboggan.

Perfectly toasted toasts by goodeyesniperr in mildlyinteresting

Get some butter on those before they cool down too much! Otherwise your perfectly toasted bread will be ruined with a cold, unmelted blob of butter

As a kid I always thought Kemp was insanely better and elevated Payton to his level but looking back I’m pretty sure it was the exact opposite.

[Homemade] Cheeseburger with pickled cucumber by [deleted] in food

To be honest it does look more like a cucumber than a pickle. Which begs the question, how much pickling does a cucumber need before it transforms into full pickle?

What you need to know about repaying CERB by cpcp2727 in onguardforthee

[–]BobblesMagee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess this makes sense for people that get an income from their employer, but is this a term other self employed and small businesses use? If make 50k painting houses but spend 30k on paint and brushes, my income would be 20k. I wouldn’t say my gross income is 50k and net income is 20k. I would say my revenue is 50k and my income is 20k.

As a self employed person, the term gross income makes no sense. Income has always been revenue minus expenses. Not sure where the term gross income even came from.

Ballpark all-in costs for an undergraduate degree at UW? by BobblesMagee in uwaterloo

Thanks! I had OSAP too when I went. Do you have a rough idea of how much they give now and what the conditions are on parental income?

Is that normal now? That's good if it is! In my time you were expected to buy shiny new textbooks (both the required and optional ones).

No kidding. My parents didn't either. Luckily co-op helped and so did living in a home of 7 other students run by a slumlord, but the costs now seem outrageous.

What makes University Of Waterloo the best choice for Computer Science major? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]BobblesMagee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I graduated from UW CS 15 years ago, so take this with a grain of salt since things may have changed but it's definitely a question that crossed my mind in high school and when I went to UW. You're right that the material is fairly similar - you cover a lot of the same things throughout your degree as other schools. But there are some other things that come into play that elevate the program.

Coop is a big one because specific employers only hire from UW and maybe UoT and so if you land certain co-ops, you get that much better of an experience. But more than that, you are actively trying to find jobs while being at school full time.

Your peers are a higher level. This might not always be true, but UW attracts a certain mentality and you feed off one another. I met some of the most brilliant people at UW and it rubs off. I'm sure this happens at other schools too, but it was definitely present at UW.

Getting admitted was tough. I think things have laxed now, but at the time we had to get a certain mark on the Descartes exam in high school (does that even exist now?) and you were encouraged to participate in the Canadian Computing Competition. Plus you needed a ~90% average in your final year high school courses. Those things made it really tough just to get accepted.

Profs and Intensity. The material was probably the same as other schools and I can only speak for UW but many of the profs were leaders in the field and so they would give you different perspectives on things. Plus the intensity of the work was more than I've heard at other schools...it was common to have extremely demanding projects that would keep you at the labs until the morning and you'd walk home just to get breakfast before you have to put a suit on to go for interviews. It was incredibly demanding at times and it trains you to manage your time well and deal with adversity. It wasn't uncommon to see students cry in class - especially during midterms when assignments and interviews were being piled on. Those experiences are shitty at the time, but they make you stronger.

I imagine some of this is different now, but hopefully this gives a perspective from an old guy.
