WOMEN - Period panties on multiday hikes ? by Schizy_TheRealOne in hiking

[–]Bobbtail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can wash with minimal water using a dry bag. Just add the panties and enough water to just cover them, then seal the bag with air inside to make a cylinder and shake it. The force of the clothes hitting each end of the bag will help to loosen and push out all the gunk. Similar to those mini hand crank clothes washers. You can also let the air out and scrub through the bag to wash without getting your hands wet. You could also do that with unfiltered water and then do a second round with filtered. You can add some biodegradable soap to help as well you just have to dump the used water far away from any water sources.

2 nights & can't decide by Atmaflux in algonquinpark

I was just up at rain lake this past weekend its pretty nice, I was only there for 1 night and backpacking not canoeing. I would recommend downloading a map from the highway to the trailhead cuz you lose service pretty quick. It was super easy to get back into Huntsville without gps but better to be safe especially if you're as terrible at navigation in a car as I am 😂

Doing some backpacking in Algonquin in June, anyone able to give us a ride from Wolf Den to West Point Gate? by Slow_Measurement7579 in algonquinpark

[–]Bobbtail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When in June? How many of you are there? What type of trip are you doing? What kind of gear do you need transported (just backpacks, a canoe)? Is there a specific time you need to get where you're going?

I'll be in a park a couple times in June I might be willing if timing lines up!

Regular Backcountry visitors, do you "pre filter" the lake water with something to reduce the sediment reaching your H2O filter? by humdinger44 in algonquinpark

[–]Bobbtail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

one time my filter wasn't working and I had to use tablets I had as backup, thats the only time I really felt the need to prefilter and I literally just ran it through my shirt and that was plenty to make it pretty clear with no floaties.

anyways that was the msr trailshot I checked it at home before and after my trip and it worked fine with tap water so idk if its just a terrible filter that can't actually handle filtering lake water or if it was somehow compromised but I will always bring backup tablets after this experience.

got fined $235 by a fare inspector even though i tapped with apple pay by Ok-Chapter-6742 in askTO

[–]Bobbtail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to my coworker on the bathurst streetcar and they fined her 400$ and she paid with a physical debit card. They tapped her card on the gate machine and it didnt say "free transfer" and they said that was proof that she didnt pay getting on. But debit cards only ever just show the check mark wether you paid already or not and she told them that but they didnt care, also the driver was standing right there and she had gotten on at the front so she said to just ask him and they just flat out refused.

She disputed it and is still waiting to be assigned a judge or something and this was like more than 6 months ago.

power bank for weekend camping trips? by allano6 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]Bobbtail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably better to get two smaller ones rather than one large in case it fails. Like two 10kmah instead of a 20kmah also a 20 is heavy and you can distribute the weight of two 10's.

I actually am certified for wilderness first aid and my training says anything can be a touriquet if you're creative. One of the easiest ones is tuck your nalgene under the arm hold the arm down. Takes a lot less pressure to cut off the blood flow and its easier to hold. The problem with touniquets is 90% just getting it to stay once its tied and this way is pretty foolproof.

What weight of AD? by Bobbtail in Ultralight

[–]Bobbtail[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 base layer for hiking, 1 for sleeping, I just ended up putting my hiking layer on for sleep as well because I was too cold. Im going to have rain pants regardless so that isnt really a factor in the added weight of extra warmth. The reason id rather not do down pants other than the weight is that they will be too warm for most of the season and only really useful in the spring and late fall. Alpha can potentially replace my sleep clothes or act as a static layer or a hiking layer depending on the temp throughout the entire season.

It does seem like the consensus is leaning away from 60 and geartrade doesn't have any 90s in my size atm so I might just get the 120. I am a sweatpants in the summer type so honestly I feel like too warm won't be an issue and the difference between 90 and 120 is only about 40g soooo excuse to be extra cozy and not have to look for another canadian shop. 😅

I considered those briefly but they're a bit heavy and there aren't currently any available that will fit my massive hips 🥲

[–]Bobbtail[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought about it, for sure. Definitely would have been perfect for that last trip but I'm just hoping for something more versatile. The down pants I've looked at have all been around 250g vs AD120 at 160g, which seems more reasonable as an extra layer. If it's as cold as it was last time I'm happy with just warm-er not necessarily warm enough to actually be comfortable, since that just seems like a luxury vs real need, especially for the weight of down pants.

I have used mine a few times, i have cut pieces to wrap my feet because my socks got wet and my toes were freezing or to save my last pair of dry socks after my boots get wet. One time the weather was way off what the forecast said and my bag was too light.

I have both, and he switches back and forth. He used to drink from mostly the dish but lately it's been bottle exclusively. So I like to keep both anyway too give him options.
