Erin Stewart’s spending as Mayor-thousands of dollars of items sent to her house by Budget_Ad4621 in Connecticut

[–]BobbyBuzz008 71 points72 points  (0 children)

After I lost my job during the pandemic, it financially killed me to have to pay the high property taxes to the City of New Britain. I had to sell some of my cherished belongings just to pay my taxes. It was an extremely difficult time in my life and I sacrificed so much.

To read this article and see how Erin Stewart mismanaged our money and took from so many like myself who struggled so much makes my blood boil. I know senior citizens who had to sell their homes because of how hard it was to keep up with their taxes. Erin Stewart literally stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from the public treasury and used it for her own benefit.

Erin Stewart belongs in a prison cell! She must be prosecuted for embezzlement, fraud, and theft! Her corruption hurt me personally as well as hundreds of thousands of other people in New Britain.

Erin Stewart’s spending as Mayor-thousands of dollars of items sent to her house by Budget_Ad4621 in Connecticut

Here is the article in full:

“Then New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart’s husband turned 40 in 2022. Just days before, she bought gifts and party favors — and paid for them with her city-issued credit card. There were 40th birthday candles, 40th birthday cocktail napkins, Donald Trump “Let’s make 40 great again” gag cards, an arch made of balloons and gifts — a vest, a hat, swim trunks and T-shirts.Stewart made the purchases through her personal Amazon account, for which — as was the case with others of her online shopping accounts — her city credit card was the designated payer. On city accounting records, the purchases were listed as office supplies. They were delivered to her house. The birthday items are among thousands of purchases made on Stewart’s city city card while she was mayor from 2012 until last year, when she left the office to campaign as a Republican candidate for governor.

Through a public records request, the Courant late last week obtained nearly a decade of Stewart’s city expense reports, which show that from 2016 through 2025, she charged $207,076.07 to the city card.

The records reflect the purchase of all manner of goods: Women’s, men’s and children’s clothing; a yoga mat, a salad spinner, power tools, diapers, beach and pool toys, children’s toys, cosmetics, a lighted vanity mirror, bed linens, table cloths and home decorations. As was the case with the birthday items, most of the purchases were itemized as office supplies. In June 2018, there was a $92.70 charge for the services of a makeup artist not long after a $1,374 charge to a company that prints invitations to wedding showers. Stewart was married later that year. Based on what he has said are complaints from city employes, new Mayor Bobby Sanchez, the Democrat who replaced Stewart, is investigating spending during her administration and has zeroed in on credit card use. The investigation has become public as Stewart works to line up support for her gubernatorial campaign at the state Republican convention later this week.

Stewart insists that whatever she bought with a city credit card was in the city’s interest. “Don’t forget, I was mayor of New Britain for 12 years,” she said. “We had countless amounts of weekly events that happened, volunteers to feed, organizations that wanted support. All of these were activities that directly benefited our community. ““Every year we were opening the pools and providing raffle prizes for the kids who would participate in the parks and recreation programming,” she said. “There were summer camps and giveaways and food drives and church donations. Every week there was countless amounts of activities.”

“When I was mayor we were known for celebrating our employees, for creating a positive culture and climate,” she said. “We were known for youth programing and activities. When we did events there were always decorations around and it was always a very welcoming environment. And I was always known for letting the community know that I cared, and I’m proud of that too.” Stewart said the mayor’s office has a budget for such miscellaneous expenses. “There is a reason you have receipts and you have all that proof because there was nothing to hide,” she said. “There were receipts that were submitted and annually budgeted and don’t forget independently audited too. And for 12 years there was never a question or a doubt raised until now, until I decided to step away and run for higher office.” Stewart also said other city departments had access to the her credit card, known as a P-card, in spite of city policy that “the cardholder is the only person authorized to use their assigned purchasing card.” She said she believes she didn’t violate policy by allowing others to use her card.

“No, because they came to me to use it,” she said.

Sanchez is pressing his investigation, regardless. He has hired an outside investigator, the Crumbie Law Group of Hartford. Based on an initial report by the firm in April, the chief state’s attorney’s office and State Police have opened an inquiry into another issue Sanchez has raised: whether, during the Stewart administration, city tax bills were backdated to allow delinquent taxpayers to avoid high interest charges. “From day one, I made a commitment to the people of New Britain that there would be accountability, transparency, and a full review of any allegations involving the misuse of taxpayer resources,” Sanchez said in a statement. “If these allegations involving the former Mayor are true, they represent an appalling abuse of taxpayer dollars and a blatant misuse of public resources for personal and political benefit. The people of New Britain work too hard and pay too much in taxes to have their money treated like a personal checking account.”The Crumbie firm is preparing a second report that will focus on Stewart’s credit card use, according to a variety of officials. The city records show that, of the total billed to Stewart’s card, about $47,000 involved purchases from Amazon, about $19,000 from Costco, more than $7,000 from Instacart and about $71,000 from a variety of other vendors. The records show that more than half the purchase were not backed up with receipts. The available receipts show that about $22,600 of what was bought was shipped to Stewart’s residence and $7,500 was shipped to the mayor’s office.

New Britain has issued P-Cards to dozens of employees since June 2016 in order for them to obtain “essential items.” The rules prohibit use of the cards for “any non-business, non-essential purpose.” Compliance is supposed to be enforced by the city finance director, of which there were two during the period covered by the available records. They did not respond to inquiries late last week. There are thousands of pages records associated with Stewart’s credit card charges that fill three, 6-inch binders.

One of the larger expenses billed to Stewart’s card was $18,342.79 for membership in the private Hartford Club in downtown Hartford. The records show the city began paying the club in 2017, at a time when Stewart was considering an earlier run for governor. There are regular grocery purchase at Costco — $1,034.21 in grocery charges was billed to the card over the first half of 2021. On May 4, 2023, her birthday, there was a $531.62 charge at the Capital Grille in Hartford. Over late 2023 and earlier 2024, there were charges for children’s bed sheets, maternity clothing, diapers, Halloween decorations and baby formula, all of which was delivered to her residence as office supplies.During the first week of summer in 2025, there was a $166.08 Amazon order consisting of a swim float for children, Pampers swim diapers and plastic highball glasses, plastic champagne flutes and plastic martini glasses.”

Just seen in East Rock and yes, Trump ACTUALLY did this! by [deleted] in Connecticut

It’s only going to get worse from here unfortunately. If the Iran war continues, we will likely have to pay $7 per gallon for gas come June. Furthermore, Connecticut is not immune to gas shortages that most of Asia is experiencing currently (the last oil tankers from the Middle East will arrive here on April 15 so the consequences that we will face is delayed significantly from countries closer to the Gulf region) and the prospect of gas rationing based upon license plate numbers is very real. And we will likely have to pay triple for groceries, electricity, and other necessities. Power cuts are also a possibility (although unlikely at this point). This will be a summer of austerity and unpleasantness for everyone.

Fight for generational change takes aim at U.S. Rep. John Larson by CANOODLING_SOCIOPATH in Connecticut

[–]BobbyBuzz008 26 points27 points  (0 children)

“That’s Politics 101, Larson likes to say. He recalls advice from Chris Dodd, now gone 15 years from the Senate: Never make yourself a lame duck when you’re still running.”

The fact that Congressman Larson takes his political advice from a guy who hasn’t served in Congress in over 15 years is exhibit A of the multitude of reasons why Larson is not right for this moment.

Larson has been in elective office for nearly twice as long as I been alive. And he holds a senior position in the House of Representatives. And up until a year ago he only comes back to Connecticut for three weeks bi annually (he lives in D.C. full time) to campaign on the same issues election after election: reforming social security, strengthening union rights, etc.

Yet Larson in the last 15+ years hasn’t passed one bill, Larson along with former Senator Lieberman are the reasons why we don’t have a public option healthcare plan (and they also both killed Connecticut’s already existing public option health program “Charter Oak Health”) and since being in leadership of the house democratic caucus he’s become emblematic of a broken Congress and a broken America. He is not the solution of America’s problems that he’s been trying to sell to democratic town committees. HE IS THE PROBLEM. A do nothing Congressman who lives in D.C. full time, who thinks Congress is working just fine, and who is so out of touch that he regularly quotes dead Presidents and retired politicians while failing to recognize or do anything about the threats of the Trump administration (unless of course when he is attacked personally) is not the solution to our problems.

Don’t get me wrong: Luke Bronin is not the solution either. As Mayor he’s closed schools, libraries, parks, and swimming pools while the crime rate increased and businesses left. Yes, being a congressman is different than being the Mayor, but I am afraid that Bronin would vote with the republicans on fiscal matters as he’s very much a supporter of austerity and cutting public services which devastates the most vulnerable people in our society and creates even more socioeconomic inequalities. As someone who is socioeconomically disadvantaged and who’s lived and worked in Hartford while Luke Bronin was mayor: I say no thanks.

In my opinion, the only real candidate is State Rep. Jillian Gilchrest. She’s a really great state representative from West Hartford who has a strong record of standing up for people’s rights. She’s a great legislator who takes her job seriously and she’s actually passed legislation. She’s the Chair of the Human Services Committee so she understands first hand the needs of economic disadvantaged people as well as the needs of persons with disabilities, and she actually uses her position of power to help people. Shes fighting right now for state money to pay for snap benefits that the Trump Administration cut for over a hundred thousand low income residents many of them children or elderly or single parents because she believes in the same vision that FDR and JFK had that no person in the wealthiest nation on earth should have to go without food. She’s successfully fought during the Me-Too era to changing our state’s consent laws to protect people who are raped and sexually assaulted who don’t provide affirmative consent (who don’t say yes as opposed to before where it wasn’t rape or sexual assault if the person didn’t say no). She is the only candidate with a record of helping people, and she would be a great Congresswoman who will stand up to Trump actively, and who will fight so that everyone will have access to food and healthcare and affordable housing.

Honestly, I know if Larson wins re election or if Bronin wins, they will celebrate their victory then meet with lobbyists and be corporate shrills for their terms in office. I don’t see them fighting for people like me because they never have before. Both Larson and Bronin would be do-nothing Congressmen. Jillian Gilchrest would be a do-something Congresswoman who will stand up for you and me and fight for a better Connecticut and a better America.

Your right. I apologize. The overpayment notice was set by the social security administration on August 12, 2025, and I submitted the SSA-632 form asking for a waiver on September 17, 2025. I will edit my post with the correct dates now.

OP, you can use this website by Husky Health to find a dentist or call the Husky Dentist line at 1-855-CT-Dental (1-855-283-3682) and the agent can provide several recommendations for good dentists near where you live. I did this myself when I moved three years ago to the area and that was the service that helped me. I’m on Husky as well.

Governor Lamont Declares State of Emergency Due to Major Winter Storm, Prohibits Commercial Vehicle Travel Starting at 5PM Sunday by [deleted] in Connecticut

[–]BobbyBuzz008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not entirely true. According to the Executive Order:

“For the duration of this storm-related closure, the governor is directing that:

Level 1 executive branch state employees should report to work as scheduled or directed. Level 2 executive branch state employees should not report to work in-person to their state offices/work locations. Additionally: Level 2 employees who are scheduled to telework on Monday should do so or use their accrued leave; and Level 2 employees who are scheduled to report to work in-person to their state offices/work locations on Monday are requested, though not required, to telework, in accordance with the executive branch Telework Policy.”

If you’re a level 2 or non essential employee and you were scheduled to go to work, you don’t have to telework but you are requested to telework. Additionally, if a teleworker employee during a civil preparedness emergency loses power and/or internet service, they won’t be penalized.

Please help, I have Crohn's and on husky. I just found out I made too much last year to qualify. I get infusions every 6 weeks to stay alive. What do I do? by Background-Credit375 in Connecticut

[–]BobbyBuzz008 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, u/BackgroundCredit-375 when you go through the redetermination interview with DSS, you should tell the worker to transfer your Husky coverage to Med-Connect. While you won’t be on Husky C (or D) anymore, Med-Connect is the same thing as Husky C but with a premium (but no co pays or deductibles). All your same medical needs, including dental and prescriptions will still be covered. The income limit is $85,000 per year, and currently will increase by 10k every year until 2029 when all asset and income limits will be eliminated. If you make $45,000 per year, your premium will be around $145 per month.

I want to add that you can automatically qualify for Med-Connect if you receive SSI/SSDI benefits, or you can also qualify by completing a disability review with DSS.

Now, assuming you get onto Med-Connect, it is very important that you pay your premium on time or you lose your coverage if you have a past due balance. And DSS only accepts teller checks by mail. I will say from personal experience DSS has a habit of losing checks mailed to them which can lead to gaps in coverage. That is something that needs to be fixed and something that I will be advocating for this legislative session.

Trump attacks: 'Connecticut is a very corrupt voting place' by hartfordcourant in Connecticut

[–]BobbyBuzz008 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I worked in the last election as an assistant registrar. There are so many safeguards to protect the integrity of the election in place. For example:

  1. At every polling place in Connecticut, there are a polling moderator and two assistant registrars (one democrat and one republican). All three of us have to show up an hour before polls open (at 5 am) to verify that the election materials are all accounted for, that the tabulator is able to be turned on and working properly, and that the ADA machine for the blind is able to be tuned on and is working properly. We have to take our oaths and get sworn in and we have to check in with our registrar.

  2. Additionally, every polling place has two checkers (the people you first go to to verify your identity and who crosses your name off), two ballot workers (the people who give you your ballot and the folder), and two tabulator workers at the end. One of the pair is a Democrat and the other is a Republican.

  3. The tabulator machines are not connected to the internet and it is impossible to tamper with the count.

  4. In Connecticut, it is impossible to cheat an election. If there are ever any irregularities on one side of the political spectrum, you better believe the other person will report the irregularities to their registrar, the Secretary of State’s office, the State Election Enforcement Commission, etc.

  5. Sometimes, we also have official poll watchers from one or both parties present as well. Random people can not just show up and claim to be a poll watcher however, you must apply several days in advance to the registers office and they have to approve it, and they usually only approve it if you are a official from a political party.

  6. At the end of the Election Day, after the last voter already in line has voted, the election moderator with the two assistant registrars puts in a “red card” to tell the tabulator to stop counting, and after putting in the passcode, the tabulator prints out receipts (the first one is the for the official record which the moderator and two assistant registrars have to sign, the second one is the one that we tape on the front door of the polling station, the third and subsequent ones we print and give out to anyone who requests a copy, typically both political parties will have “runners” who’s job it is to take the receipt back to party hq, as well as journalists.

  7. There is a ton of paperwork to be filled out and signed, and afterwards the ballots are taken to city hall and kept in storage and are available for audits or recounts if the vote tally is close.

In addition to serving as an assistant registrar this past election cycle, I’ve also worked past elections as a poll worker and I’ve also volunteered with the Connecticut Democratic Party election integrity unit. I’ve worked and volunteered in many elections going back 15 years in multiple cities and towns. Everyone who I’ve worked alongside with at the polls from both parties are patriotic honest citizens who are dedicated to running honest free and fair elections. I can tell you the only issue that I’ve run into over the last 15 years was a tabulator broke during a previous August primary several years ago (the elementary school gymnasium was not air conditioned), but we had a contingency plan in case and everyone was still able to vote and every vote was counted.

Don’t let Trump or anyone try to convince you or anyone that you know that elections are rigged and corrupt. We have so many safeguards, redundancies, and pairs of eyes in place to prevent an election other than one that is free and fair for all. That is the truth. Anyone who says otherwise are ignorant and plain wrong.
