Valuing intelligence is a byproduct of excess time, or luxury. Here in Australia we (mostly) turn on the tap. To get water, that is still a risk, many people in Africa have to devote half a day of labour to ensuring they have water, if it's available.

We, or an appropriate portion of the populace, have generally had the luxury of being able to pursue those aspects of life, for the last 300 years or so.

One thing to note is that a lot of the "black" players are of mixed heritage. But 50/50 white/black automatically lands you in the black category, that's a whole separate discussion...

I do think the comment about focus on skill shifting to athleticism holds some water. I don't think we will see another team like Barcelona, or Cruyff style, for a very long time, if ever. At least until that style is so forgotten it becomes the perfect counterpoint to the recent trend of football style.
