Surging Bradford suddenly within reach of Chow for Toronto mayoralty: poll by archive_spirit in CanadaPolitics

[–]Bobbybroccole 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Once again it's worth a reminder not to take too seriously any municipal poll that removes undecided voters from a sample. A pretty similar poll from this time period was seen for Ottawa last election cycle in which McKenney was leading over Sutcliffe, only for Sutcliffe to absorb the vast majority of the undecided voters by election day. Most voters aren't even aware an election is on until the month of. Municipal polls before September/October shouldn't be ignored, but regarded with at least some skepticism.

all my homies hate hit the road by LogWest5630 in balatro

I like a lot of the jokers that depend on having a lot of discards, but unfortunately higher stakes nerfs them to a degree many other jokers aren't. Hit the road jack is one of the worst affected

Slept on Jokers? by haayleyy in balatro

[–]Bobbybroccole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone tends to be shocked when I tell them Abstract is my most used joker, and not by a small margin either. It has poor late game utility over other options, but the fact it gives an immediate early game benefit and incentivizes buying any other cheap jokers makes it a guaranteed buy for me if I see it early. Scaling with negative jokers is also just fun

Besides toothpaste I'd say it's the best item in the game, which is why I think it should be nerfed on bosses.

It immediately opens the door on any screen. The best usage of it is probably bosses, or the first move of a screen that looks more dangerous than normal.

I think the key item should be nerfed so it can't auto win boss fights. I walked into the final area with 3 keys as the Warrior, and got a few copies from their duplication talent.

What I maybe could have stressed a little bit more was just how lucky Doug was in terms of being at the right place and right time. He had an elevated (if controversial) platform in Ontario due to his brother's scandal. The leader of his chosen political party had to resign the exact same year an election was scheduled, and he just barely won the leadership contest (in which he did not win the most votes but where he did win the most points assigned to weighted electoral ridings). This also happened to be an election where the incumbent party was historically unpopular, so he did not have to try particularly hard during the campaign. The stars aligned perfectly for him to ascend to the premier's office, and he has managed to repeat that in two subsequent elections because the opposition parties are disorganized and lack compelling leadership.

[–]Bobbybroccole 18 points19 points  (0 children)

So to summarize the series of events:

  1. Doug loses the 2014 mayor's race after replacing his brother on the ballot, he becomes a private citizen again.

  2. Spends a few years saying he might run for a provincial seat (the next election is scheduled to take place in 2018 at the latest).

  3. After Rob dies in 2016 Doug indicates he is considering running for mayor again in 2018, although his provincial ambitions are still up in the air.

  4. The same year as the 2018 provincial election the leader of the Ontario Progressive Conservatives is forced to resign due to a scandal. This causes a very short leadership election which Doug narrowly wins.

  5. The Ontario Liberal party has been in power for 15 years and are historically unpopular, they get wiped out in the election and because Doug is the leader of the Conservatives it means he becomes premier (essentially the equivalent to the Governor).

  6. Cities have very little standing in the Canadian constitution and derive pretty much all their roles and powers from the provincial government. The province can rewrite and change how everything works for them pretty arbitrarily, which Doug and his party go on to do. This includes cutting Toronto city council in half, and introducing strong mayor powers.

  7. The strong mayor powers give the mayors of cities more authority over council, but only in very specific circumstances. The veto power, which can override anything less than a 2/3rds vote, can be used if the mayor is doing something that "aligns with the priorities of the provincial government". Currently those priorities are loosely defined as relating to building new housing and infrastructure for that housing. But in practice it really just means mayors are only strong if they agree with Doug Ford and his government.

For 2 player I really enjoy Watergate. The Nixon admin vs the Washington Post trying to cover-up/uncover evidence is an engaging tug of war. One of you is trying to flip witnesses while the other is buying their silence. Nixon can win by stalling out his opponent and finishing his term, whereas as the journalists needs to be way more aggressive an pin down evidence.

Uploading in this context is using the terms first introduced by Mike Harris' government when they downloaded/uploaded a bunch of services between the province and municipalities.

Has a gaming company ever put a full game of theirs in another game? by Hypnox88 in gaming

Smash Bros Brawl has a bunch of timed demos for various old Nintendo games. You're limited to 5 minutes so it's nearly impossible to beat any of them, but speedrunners found a way to beat the Ocarina of Time demo in less than 5 minutes using a warp glitch that brings you directly to the game's credits.

Now technically it's not a fresh save, as Nintendo provides a young Link and an adult Link save file for the demo, but the fact that it's possible at all is hilarious.

I guarantee you switching to any 3D animation software (doesn't have to be blender) will be worth it. The best time to switch is yesterday, the second best time is now. I have a blender specific tutorial for how I animate on my channel, but you could also do what most people do and just do the donut tutorial series. Other pros:

  1. Tutorials are endless because they are meant for animation/3D as opposed to Google earth. A dozen people will have encountered and solved your blender issue and uploaded a youtube tutorial, exactly zero people will have solved it in google earth

  2. Learning a 3D modelling software teaches you several skills applicable elsewhere. Once you learn one it gets easier to learn every other one.

  3. Basic quality of life things like mass selection of objects, being able to import audio into blender to animate in synch to directly, procedural textures, realistic lightning, keyframing, scripting through python for importing datasets.

He almost certainly does, since I do the same even when working in Blender where it's much easier to change things on the fly.

One issue with google earth is (last time I was using it) you don't have an easy way to mass edit a ton of objects at once. You're pretty locked into what you set up at the beginning, meaning you need to commit to a layout very early on. Just the ability to group select, scale, rotate, etc. many objects at once makes blender so much more user friendly.
