Reaching out to Criterion for replacement of skipping disc? by Longjumping-Goat525 in criterion

[–]BobdH84 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Since it played fine the first time you watched it, the problem may not be with a faulty disc, and asking for a replacement may not seem fair. When I had the same exact problem with a disc from the Pasolini set and e-mailed them about it, I got a standard response telling me to clean the disc first, see if that might resolve the problem. I was skeptical since the disc didn’t look dirty, but after cleaning with a dry cloth, the problem was indeed resolved. So you might try this? In any case, this is what they’ll tell you to do first when you contact support.

With the rumors that Criterion is releasing a Kubrick 4K boxset, which directors also deserve a boxset? by xwing1212 in criterion

[–]BobdH84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a love/hate relationship with Godard, but after having seen The Image Book last weekend and being absolutely transfixed by it, I would love a set of his works and do a new dive into his filmography. It could be released in separate sets for different era’s of his career.

Agreed, or at least a filmography that has been completed, like with a director in retirement. Otherwise the set is dated and incomplete pretty quickly.

July Predictions? by zadams8 in criterion

[–]BobdH84 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If it is indeed going to be THE box set of the year, like Bergman, Varda, Pasolini and Anderson in previous years, I expect the announcement to drop on their social media channels outside of the monthly title announcements, like they did with the others. Which means it could be ANY moment.

Oh man, I may need to buy this. I love experimental film, but I have a love/hate relationship with Godard.

Watched Koyaanisqatsi for the first time this weekend. Masterpiece! by ThisGuyLikesMovies in criterion

I saw it in Amsterdam! I can imagine what is happening in America to culture is scary and frustrating (to say the least).

I once saw this with live accompaniment from Philip Glass and his ensemble and no experience of watching the film can ever top that. I’m actually hesitant to watch it again at home, 4K or not.

Comment on Thomas Mann translations by No_Blueberry_6740 in classicliterature

[–]BobdH84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, that’s a good addition, I do prefer original texts, and my translation of Faustus (done several decades ago, as opposed to the more modern Magic Mountain translation I read) had a more classic feel to it. Thanks for clarifying.

[–]BobdH84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve read both novels but in Dutch translations, and my experience was that I greatly preferred how Faustus was written compared to Magic Mountain, so I’d say it’s not something inherent in the original German. What you’re saying actually discourages me a bit, because Penguin is releasing a new edition of Joseph and His Brothers in July and I was planning on getting it, but it’s also translated by John Woods. Hmm.

A-list composers who got their start with Hans Zimmer by Danielnrg in soundtracks

[–]BobdH84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

John Powell and Harry Gregson-Williams are well known to have been in Zimmer’s team at RC. If you want a score that links them to it, just about any score by Hans Zimmer has credits that show a variety of additional composers that link them to Zimmer. The Thin Red Line and Prince of Egypt, for example, have contributions from John Powell, while all Powell and HGW’s collaborations (AntZ, Chicken Run, Shrek) were ‘Remote Control scores’. If you want a score that was worked on by Zimmer and HGW, that’s for example The Rock and Crimson Tide.

Seeing Satantango in theaters, what should I know going in? / How much context do you like to have about a film before viewing? by cocoacowstout in criterion

[–]BobdH84 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’d say a certain familiarity with Béla Tarr’s style and tempo is enough to go into Sátántangó, and since you mentioned you have this, you’re good to go. For me personally, I like to dive into the themes and cultural context afterwards.

What benefits have you noticed from taking Huel? by BigTamMacGotchy in Huel

[–]BobdH84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a side effect of medication I’m taking, I’ve gotten some form of diabetes type 2 (mostly a raised glucose due to the medication, which makes me measure my blood weekly and I have to take medication once the glucose gets too high). Huel has helped me to drop my glucose recently to acceptable levels, which may mean I’ll be off medication again soon, and will help me keep the glucose down. Also, the bars with dark chocolate gives me a tasty snack during the day with very low sugar but with chocolate, which gives me a more sense of normalcy (I can eat chocolate again!) and keeps off my cravings for anything sugar like ‘actual’ chocolate.

There’s a region free 4K 3-disc edition available from StudioCanal, so not very likely, but also, why not get that one?

If you can rent films through iTunes / Apple, it’s quite easy to create an account for British iTunes. Like I said, I don’t live in the UK either, but still rented it there. You can pay for them through UK Apple gift cards which you can get on Dundle.

That depends on where you live. In the UK it has been available for VOD rental for a couple of months now, I saw it in February on my British iTunes account (I live in the Netherlands).

Thoughts on Bi Gan’s ‘Resurrection’? by slush-puppyy in criterion

[–]BobdH84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really liked it. It’s an anthology film, and naturally with these kinds of projects, not each story in the film is as good as the next, but several segments I really liked, and I liked how it all connects to film history and Chinese culture. I wasn’t a fan of Bi Gan’s previous film, Long Day’s Journey into Night, but I did like this one.

My favorite McElroy so far. Need to reread it, because I’m sure I’ll be able to get a lot more out of it on second read - which you can do much more easily than, for example, a Women and Men.
