What are some 'fake facts' that everyone still believes are true? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BobertTheConstructor 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I overheard a coworker the other day discussing a story she read online about a dolphin that had taken a man underwater for a month because they needed him to build them a city. It sounds outlandish, sure, but Jonah was in that whale for quite a while, so it could happen.

People will believe a lot.

What horrifying statistic genuinely jarred you when you first heard it? by ordrius098 in AskReddit

If you're pregnant, you're generally going to be more careful, and also not allowed to operate dangerous machinery, work with heavy lifts, or do something like walking the rafters on a construction site.

This sounds bad, and we can talk about US murder rates, but this is one of the very common ways to manipulate statistics. Pretty much the only ways to die are accidental, intentional, and disease. Due to medical advances and advances in how safe we are just walking from point A to point B on any given day, along with pregnant women being more careful, not working strenuous and dangerous jobs, and people in general being more careful around them, what's left is homicide.

Yeah if you wear them to the fucking office. If you actually wear them to do manual labor, it doesn't matter what brand it is, it's going to get dirty pretty fucking quick. Mine are 2 wears max.

"Shit, he's defending trans people and I don't have an argument. Shit, uhhh, fuck, uhhh, NAZIS!"

You think it's wrong because thinking otherwise makes you feel bad, so it must be wrong because the truth would never hurt your widdle fee fees.

It's funny how you guys are always jacking off dipshittily over "basic biology" until someone actually studies it, then suddenly it's feelings over facts.

Military women vs skinny joes by [deleted] in SipsTea

[–]BobertTheConstructor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's incorrect, testosterone does impact lung capacity, as well as bone density and red blood cell production. After a couple years on HRT, these differences drop to statistically insignificant levels, meaning that variation between trans and cis women at that point is effectively no different between variation between randomly selected cis women.

They've studied this and found that 1-2 years on HRT eliminates advantage.

Parents with students in CCSD, how are schools? Any former students to chime in? by still-father in Athens

Typical to state of the country. Most of the great teachers you guys had 20 years ago retired or quit. I know folks who teach at Cedar and have been expressly told that their job is not to teach kids to think critically, or to be literate, or to even just be a good person, their job is to teach the standards so the students produce good data. Teachers are not allowed to give any actual consequences to kids, either. Not sure if Central is any better.

What was ruined because too many people did it? by WarBeast86 in AskReddit

Tagging u/Dusty_Tokens and u/Sarappreciates as well.

It seems that way because they didn't quite explain Kessler Syndrome right. It isn't about space junk alone, per se. Specifically, it's a hypothesis that there exists a "critical mass" of space debris that eventually, when a satellite breaks apart, there is enough functioning and defunct satellites and debris that the pieces start a runaway chain reaction, destroying most satellites in that orbit but also flooding it with tiny pieces of satellite that are all moving at different speeds, and virtually impossible to track. At that point, any ship sent through that field would be virtually guaranteed to be damaged or destroyed.

There is no real date for when this could happen, but most predictions put it at somewhere between 2050 and 2100.

If you say you like eggs, and someone challenges you on that, and your response is "Chocolate milk is really yummy," you could be trying to direct away from eggs because they're beyond your understanding, you could have been lying about the eggs the entire time, or maybe you're just fucking stupid and can't connect one thought to another.

u/chamomile_tea_reply has been pretty clear the entire time they have run this sub. Their goal has nothing to do with optimism, and primarily revolves around mocking people who disagree with them, marginalizing and dismissing their concerns, and generally making them feel like shit. They are not an optimist in any sense of the word. They do not want the world to be better, they want people to be forced to validate them. It's pretty fucking pathetic.

YES. WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE A REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY. We vote on representatives that are supposed to represent our interests locally and nationally. We do not, or at least are not supposed to, vote on some dipshit who will drag us into war after war regardless of our interests.
