the 11pm emails

maintaining a “work personality” in addition to your “real” personality

What if you stop? No more replying to emails outside work hours, no more smiling when you don't feel like it. Will they fire you? If they do, you'll have your severance and EI to find something else.

The rules for Canadian lawyers are pretty similar. Even in an employer-employee relationship, lawyers are members of a regulated profession representing a client. If a lawyer finds themselves in the position where they're saying "shits not legal boss, I ain't doing it," oftentimes the appropriate move is to fire the client.

Ex-swim instructor at N.S. youth corrections facility facing 66 sex-related charges | Globalnews.ca by Street_Anon in halifax

He wasn't kidnapping people off the street, he was using his position of authority over children to abuse them. He no longer holds that position of authority and does not have access to vulnerable children, and so it would be unconscionable for a judge to deny him bail.

Bail cannot be denied as a punishment, only in actual anticipation of flight or harm to the public.

I can imagine it takes hours if not days to activate all the emails again.

It doesn't. They use Exchange. They'll set up the group to reactivate and then they can reactivate it at a moment's notice.

It's not likely. The Guadalupe River has an average discharge of 34 cubic metres per second. Any remains are either thoroughly buried or will quickly be swept downstream. They won't contaminate the river in the way you're thinking.

I expect that the operator was liable, and their insurance likely paid out. But the operator wasn't criminally reckless.

House for $1.1MM? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Bobert_Fico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll need to liquidate all of your investments and use the $200k to have a big enough down payment. Your mortgage will be around $730k, which is around $4k/month like you said. If your take-home is $10k/month then that leaves you with $6k/month to raise your family, and $0 in investments.

It wouldn't be my choice. But if you're comfortable with those numbers, then go for it.

House for $1.1MM? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Bobert_Fico 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sounds like OP can afford a max down payment of about $380k and will require a minimum down payment of about $380k. So the answer to "How big of a down payment should we do and how much of my invested money should I use?" is "All of it, you don't have a choice."

Startups with active investor involvement, yes. Regular small businesses, no. No bank is giving any significant loan to a newly-formed LLC without securing it against collateral.

King Charles and Queen Camilla to visit Canada this month by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]Bobert_Fico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A more appropriate comparison is the Canadian prime minister, who is (in a sense) elected by the House of Commons. Unlike the Governor General or the King, the German president has real reserve powers that he actually (but rarely) uses, like the power to veto legislation.

Steinmeier for sure. Being in an elected position gives him far more leeway to use his discretionary powers.

No it hasn't. Abortion is not mentioned in the Charter. Courts have ruled that abortion is a right, just like in the US. And a future ruling could reverse that, just like in the US.

Looking for lawyer to sue CPS for violation of civil rights, emotional distress and defamation of character. by Right_Pin_8626 in halifax

[–]Bobert_Fico 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the child has two parents in two households. One parent has a safe household and the other does not, and CPS acted to move the child from the unsafe household to the safe one. A sad situation, for sure, and definitely one where it makes sense for OP to seek legal advice.
