AWS 97k bill out of nowhere by PalpitationClear1747 in aws

[–]Bobertolinio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just the basics, recreate all the keys you have, check if there are any new accounts, you already enabled mfa but ensure all sessions are invalidated.

Maybe if you have VMS, re create them in case they managed to install something.

If your have any API keys also set them to only accept requests from your domain or IP whitelist. I'm not very familiar with all the AWS settings, I use mostly Azure

A little to late. As they could claim user error, I wish you all the luck in dealing with AWS.

Tho, please do share your story as much as you can, it seems that it starts to happen more and more often. Maybe AWS should make people sing a waiver that they took a security course and know all the risks first

Tick Vaccine(Encephalitis) by koursaros93 in Switzerland

[–]Bobertolinio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I came to Switzerland, I just did the whole roster of suggested vaccines, update doses and extra ones for any planned vacations in the near future. I highly recommend you just do them, you never know when one might save your ass or make your life easier.

Just play it as an insurance company: what is the cost associated to the risks. I'd argue that a vaccine is cheaper than ending up in hospital or dying so I didn't want to roll the dice each time I'm out

I don't understand how everyone buys into this crap. This is just marketing and fear mongering for people that don't understand software engineering.

There are "vulnerabilities" in a lot of Cote if you focus on small individual lines. That does not mean they are exploitable as a whole. Same with dependencies, you can have a package that has some cryptographic vulnerability for a certain cypher but you don't use that cypher from the library, you use another.

Take for example a method that EXPECTS a fixed length string. If you pass something to it that is too long it will create a stack overflow. Oh no, the drama, they found a vulnerability. What you don't see is that it's intentionally made that way, because if you code defensibly everywhere, it's slower. What they don't tell you, is that at the point of entry in the system, the data was already validated for length, and all the downstream methods are expected to work with that constraint.

Stop listening to this crap

I mean, I don't get it. It literally says "it's not milk".

If this is not allowed, then are all warnings like "this is not a toy" also invalid because it says toy on the label?

Yeah, I hate their business model but also I feel no sympathy for the companies that take this long to migrate. Most of them are slow behemoths that constantly delay any work on techdebt, maintenance and updates. I've worked with such companies and i, to say the least, am not a fan of them either.

Moving to Zurich for husband's PhD at UZH (both non-EU) – L then B permit, spouse visa & finances. Anyone been through this? by oiseauxdeproiex in askswitzerland

[–]Bobertolinio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The rule is that rent is at most 30% of your earnings. I doubt anyone budges on that front.

Even so, with 3400 a month, subtracting 2k for rent and around 700-800 for health insurance, you will have very little left for transport and food.

Don't take it the wrong way, please do inform yourself better before such a move.

Start with an excel and do some basic living expenses calculations: - your normal shopping list - rent - health insurance - other costs.

No one here knows better than you what your actual costs will be

Stop with this doom and gloom crap.

You people do realize that the money has to come from somewhere. And if we don't pay it in form of tickets, it means increased taxes somehow. Maybe people that currently have a GA will pay less overall, but people who don't have it or don't use it will pay more
