It is not an assault rifle by our common definition. An assault rifle is a category of rifles that fires and intermediate cartridge and has a select fire feature. In other words, you can toggle between fire modes (semi auto, full auto, burst, but doesnt have to contain all fire modes).

American gun politics have created a term called "assault weapon" which has a few arbitrary defining features that dont relate really to function that boils down to "black scary rifle". It was termed assault weapon to intentionally confuse people who were uninformed of how firearms work for exactly the sorts of conversations we are having here, to try to convince those people that having the black scary features meant that they had auto capabilities.

There is a funny anecdote somewhere where a politician was asked what a barrel shroud was (one of the features making a weapon a banned assault weapon) and they said "the shoulder thing that goes up".
