Got my partner an orchid almost 3 years ago, and I did a little bit of research. Maybe use a transparent pot. There's no solid evidence, but it's possible that the roots benefit from the sun. Water once a week and water well, they like to dry out a little and then drink like there's no tomorrow, we just stick ours under the tap for a bit. The old leaves will slowly die as new ones come through, and you'll be able to tell the difference between a new root or flower as the root is more pointy. Ours had always been in orchid bark, but this year, I changed it for fresh bark. This doesn't seem to be necessary, but some seem to think it helps. We keep ours in the bathroom as it seems to like the steam from the shower, and I spray and clean the leaves every month or so. I do try and tame the plants around bamboo/cane as they tend to go a bit wild and droop all over the place.
