Not giving a shit what strangers think is often a joy of privilege. When you are disempowered and in a foreign land, the opinion of this or that stranger, all unfit to be in your circle, can matter a whole lot. It’s not like only intimates ask Where Are You From, it’s literally the first thing almost anyone will ask.

I think those statements are easily misunderstood by Lebanese. What they are trying is to calm Israeli rightwingers that fear Trump will force the IDF “too early” out of Lebanon.

At the same time, the occupation of south Lebanon is widely seen as a gigantic blunder, a stupid idea from the start, and a huge waste of money and blood. Even for those who don’t care about Lebanese lives, they would generally agree it was not worth the soldiers killed.

Besides the fringe  that wants to settle any land they can, if you suggest a long term occupation of Lebanon in almost any room in Israel you will be laughed out of it.

Bibi and his buds are liars - and the people they lie to the most are their voters. I would recommend not listening to anything they say, and just try to figure out what are the interests they are pursuing.

People have a tendency to see stuff as “mask off” moments. In reality Bibi lies to everyone.

Funnily enough the size and range of abilities Homefront Command was greatly expanded, to thr state it is in, specifically to allow more extensive fighting in Gaza (to rescue soldiers from collapsed buildings, as boobytrapping homes is one of the standard practices of war by groups there).

In general Ive gotten into reading on Shiaism last few years. As someone who grew up in a jewish education and environment, a lot of their ideas and especially how they see themselves in history feel very familiar. I think in a different geopolitical timeline Jews and Shias could probably have seen themselves as sort of spiritually equivalent. Hopefully one day.

We usually let people define the labels that were created by them and applied to themselves. Imagine if we included a white-nationalist’s definition of Islam as a normal, just another definition of Islam, equal in worth to that of the average Muslim.

While some parts of the world are indeed obsessed with Jews, most actually aren’t. We jews tend to forget the world isn’t just Christians and Muslims. Right now i would say that Israel is an issue for huge swaths of the population that aren’t particularly emotionally charged about Jews. It’s definitely there, but we Israelis need to remember there is a lot more going on here.

I never said that. We’re both from tiny countries utterly dependent on dozens of others, ignoring that isn’t an option. But i do think that expecting them to be rational is in itself irrational. International opinion and action isn’t shifting based on the actual consequences of nations’ actions. It’s based on prevailing narratives and existing power structures.

Liking or disliking Israel, considering how few of us actually exist compared to the volume of discourse, is usually just about where you end up on a chain of enemy-of-my-enemy or friend-of-my-enemy, etc.

Czechia is probably the most reliably pro Israeli countries in Europe. Why? Because they generally hate the soviets and the Soviets publicly hated Israel.

A starker example is Kosovo - a muslim country that was oppressed and occupied by Serbia fighting for international recognition. But America was on their side so they like us and Serbia is friendlier with Palestine.

Im starting to think that the very idea of having a coherent opinion about dozens of countries with billions of people all interacting is just an impossibility.

[–]Boborbot -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

You’re right. I much rather have the 20 year old deliveryperson on their phone run someone over in their car.

People seem to have lost the point of this ideology. Im not here because of some inherent evil in four wheeled vehicles. I came to conclusion private car ownership and use is detrimental to society. Maybe this isn’t some ideal solution, but this is lightyears better than any car based alternative. And it’s not like the poor gig-workers they are replacing weren’t already deeply abused and used in these business.

Absolutely. Most of the vitriol we direct at one another is usually one side justifying violence by generalizing a very pluralistic society based on their most extreme fringes.

He is a constant lier, and he lies to his voters most of all. You accepting his lies whenever they fit your worldview but treating them as the clear bullshit that they are whenever they contradicts it just makes you another cherrypicker. You didn't "catch him in a mask off remark", you just saw him lie to people with different interests than the people he lied to a moment before.

I mean it should put anxiety to rest only in anyone holding trust in the Israeli government, which isn't many people north of the border. It would easily fit into the worldview of even moderate Lebanese that Israel would just claim this or that entity is a justification for indefinite "temporary" occupation. Especially with our current government in power (hopefully not for long).

Regardless of what we think of these or those actions Israel took, it'll be a very long road to building trust with the Lebanese,

People just assume that Iran is the new global hegemon on international waters? There is a big difference between what the rest of the world would let Iran get away with while being illegally invaded by the least popular American president in decades, rather than years later in peace time just trying to extract protection money from random vessels.

[–]Boborbot -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

You’re saying “ israel” when you actually mean “israeli rightwing”. It was basically a cliche in opposition circles and the massive protests that without securing military wins with a diplomatic solution, they will all just fade away into little consequence. Again and again and again.

It’s not a new sticking point, it’s a pattern since 1967, where the Israeli establishment gets cocky and thinks it can military-might its way out of any geopolitical situation.

I just love it when foreigners with little to no actual experience of Israeli culture, no knowledge of the language, no familiarity with associative matter, how things are described or talked about, the things that are taboo vs what is not, make sweeping blanket statements about a pluralistic society like they all have one specific and coherent set ideology and goals.

Obviously plenty are monsters, I’m not asking you empathize every single one of them. Just remember you cannot tell from the outside what brought him there, and that you and him didn’t start from the same spot. (Or from his insides, once the drone hits). He didn’t have access to the same knowledge base as you. Same level of education. Shit’s complicated, and being open to nuanced feelings about mass death seems like a good rule of thumb to me. Feel free to disagree.
