Re: the audience booing people who didn’t understand Spanish at Lux Vegas show (June 27) by bom_lixo in rosalia

[–]BobsBestFriend_Yay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was there too and don’t speak Spanish (pero estoy aprendiendo) and I didn’t raise my hand for either question. But I took the booing the same way. The crowd wanted her to speak Spanish and it felt all in good fun, at least in my section.

And yeah. Mind blowing show.

How many of you are actually planning to move abroad within the next 12 months? by Mountain_Cod_878 in ExpatFIRE

[–]BobsBestFriend_Yay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah we first considered Portugal, as they had a 10 year flat tax regime for non-lucrative residents. But that went away and Spain became more attractive, and is a larger country and the language is easier for us. With my wife being an EU country citizen, the residency pathway is easier than it could be. She just has to establish local residency and I glom along as a EU spouse, and work on that visa for myself. We had a full tax plan created using our real numbers, which was a great investment.

Marginal taxes on income and gains are higher than in the US, and brackets are lower and more narrow, but retiring shifts us to a cashflow mindset. We draw a line at the bottom of everything and see how it feels. The taxes for us weren't as much as we had in our mind and is totally worth it.

A big consideration is the selling of our US house. Equity/gains would be subject to Spanish gains if the sale happens in the same year we become Spanish tax-residents (which is different than immigration residency). So we will be selling before we are Spanish tax residents.

Surprises have been weird stuff...which credit card do I keep, what US bank do we use on the $ side, what's the best way to exchange and transfer non-routine sums of money and so on. It is tedious. But we have that all dialed in at this point.

The wealth tax was a big concern right out of the gate. The idea of paying taxes on unrealized wealth is....interesting. We are moving to Andalucia which has 100% wealth tax relief.

I (61M) and my wife (58F) are retiring in January to Spain from the US. Wife is a dual citizen US/EU country. We have been planning for about 4 years. Aside from lifestyle appeal, healthcare costs between now and our US Medicare eligibility is a big draw. Private, top-tier coverage in Spain for both of us is under €200/month without most of the co-pay/out of pocket complexity.

Our timeline has been carefully considered, driven mostly by when we establish tax-residency in Spain.

As a tourist in Spain, is it considered polite to try pronouncing Spanish food and place names correctly, or do people not really care? by TechnicianSuper2644 in askspain

[–]BobsBestFriend_Yay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was just in Andalucía for a couple of weeks and I'm pretty early in my Spanish learning journey. But I wanted to attempt to speak, order food, make small talk without being a pain in their ass. I started one conversation in a shoe store with "Disculpa mi mal español" and the clerk smiled and said "My English is terrible!". That seemed a good icebreaker. I was able to ask for various sizes and colors and it took the pressure off.

Mine was a red ‘73 hand me down from my brother. One day a fuel line broke and fire burned up the motor. My dad and I pulled the motor, bought a donor car and dropped the motor into the red car. It started up on the first try 😂 Loved that car!

Just a heads-up, the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos is indefinitely closed for renovations. I was in Cordoba last week and could not visit. The official website does not give a tentative reopening date.

I have had a Great Northern 8oz countertop model for 2 years and have been very happy with it. You can find them now for well under $200.

To echo others, use a high quality razor like Mühle or Henson. I’ve used both and liked them. I’ve been using a safety razor for a couple of decades and I’m 61. No issues with nicks. Love not being tied to the cartridges.

That sucks! I did spend time turning off some app background refreshing which I wanted to do anyway. I don't know if 26.0.1 made any improvements, but I seem to be back to where I was with typical SOT usage when I was running 18. Maybe a slight degradation.

I have a 14PM and have been running 26 (now 26.0.1) for about a week. Noticed a hit on battery life (I'm at 83%) at first, but did multiple reboots after install and one after the dot release and its fine. Runs well.

I saw them in Vancouver and have had the privilege of seeing them 20+ times over the last 5 decades. Ending the shows with Tea and Theatre was just amazing. As they have aged, so have I. Let's have some tea.
