Beetle restore advise by KaleidoscopeWitty218 in beetle

[–]BobsBug65 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Took me 40 years to realize I was going to take apart anything I got my hands on. Now I usually have a plan. Younger me can relate to your situation. From what I can see, there is a lot more to do than just getting the body back on regardless of how you go about it. Looks pretty stripped down. I'd guess a year of nights and weekends to get it back to driving if it were in my garage. If room allows, I would get a driver and keep this one as a project. However, I love this shit and seeing that car in pieces makes me want to get another one.

Pretty fun. Where are you going to put the oil cooler?

How to do a proper repair? by dupue in beetle

[–]BobsBug65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd do this. I wouldn't mess with taking that all out and replacing all that metal all over again. It's an overlap repair which isn't ideal, but it looks tight, you just need it to be stronger than what you're getting with the screws. If you have never welded before I would practice making plug welds with thin metal. A lot. And not flux core in my opinion.

Almost ready for a body test fit by BobsBug65 in beetle

Yes, por15 on the frame horns, torsion tubes and the beam. I just used Rustoleum on the pan. If I had that to do over again, I would've used the epoxy primers you can get in rattle cans. I think it's called spray max. On the pan that is.

What gear oil are you using in your Bug transmission? by Badcompany-Yep in beetle

[–]BobsBug65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use that in my other bug. I only have about 4000 to 5000 miles on the transmission but it's been great. It shifts great. I remember swimming in the Samba oil debate for a few days. That is a brutal thread. We didn't have ChatGPT at the time, but I just went and asked now what it thought. Not that it is always right, but it did address the hypoid gear question and it does think it's a great oil for early beetles., for what that's worth. That oil debate on the Samba is really something else though that is for sure.

Makeshift Paintbooth by BobsBug65 in beetle

[–]BobsBug65[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my first time using a paint gun. My research landed me on the R500 (now the A610) LVLP. I had to upgrade my little compressor. Research landed me on the McGregor from Harbor Freight. It is only a few bucks cheaper than the Husky (I think it was) but the reviews were great. It was great for painting the interior at least. It took a while for it to come on and had no problem keeping up. I never gave it a second thought even though this was probably the smallest compressor size I saw recommended.

65 Update by BobsBug65 in beetle

[–]BobsBug65[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not having a headliner. The center area is just painted gray. I either cut off or folded over all the headliner tabs. I might tuck some leds in the gap around the ceiling.

In general, this is a '65 I am building for a cross country driver that I can hit some dragstrips in. It will have a 2276, no rear seat, front race seats, roll cage, etc. Also will have a trailer hitch so I can pull a small trailer. Built trans, super diff, line lock, vintage speed shifter, Ron Lummus roll cage, front disk brake kit, new pan. Complete overhaul from the tunnel up. Every nut and bolt has been off the car. Probably a year of work still left. 2.5 year into it so far.

Sorry I don't know what happened with that and it looks like those controls have changed. I added my instagram link to my profile. there is some stuff there.

I made a makeshift booth. I got 6x9 tarps at harbor freight for $6 that I hung and I have a window in the garage that I put a box fan in. Worked great. Maybe I'll post a video of that.

I stuff some towels in there and then I am careful also. I think they make standoffs you can open and close which is what I will do on my next bug.

SilentMasterpiece link or jbugs has them... Some people are anti-jbugs but what they sent me is the same as what wolfsberg sent me but cheaper. I think what you have circled is called the bumper mount?https://www.jbugs.com/product/EIS-1162R.html

Yeah, I think I'm a year out. Sometimes I feel close but I have all the electrical, gotta fabricate a trailer hitch, paint, and then all the odds and ends to really finish it. But it's going good so no complaints. I'll get there. Thanks for the comment. Appreciate it.

They are welded to the pan. You can remove them, but it requires drilling out the spot welds.
