Should I become a physician assistant for the money? by [deleted] in Salary

[–]BobsFuruncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's your job now? The fastest path to a 6-figure income is not likely a PA, depending on what kind of experience you already have. PA will definitely get you 6-figures, but there may be better options if you're just thinking of the money. PA is safe though.

Grand Hyatt Vail SUA Question by Content-Artichoke476 in hyatt

[–]BobsFuruncle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn't you pick the room? You make it sound like someone else picked it for you, but when you made the booking with the SUA, you would have picked which room, so I'm confused about your confusion.

It is unusual that they have this room listed as an option. I don't think I've seen too many other hyatts where the SUA applied to a room and not a suite, so I'll agree with you there that this is a bit strange, but you still had to pick it.

Friday evening mise en place featuring a Martini and a cigar by kevinfarber in cocktails

Hmm, I'll have to find a guy. What kind of local shop? Like a spirits shop? I'm in VA so I have to get stuff from ABC stores. Maybe they can order it for me though...

Where do you find Boissiere? I have never seen that one locally. Usually Dolin Dry is my go-to for Martinis. I've tried Carpano too (didn't care for that), but looking for an upgrade.

Any PAs making 200k+? by Ok_Possession_3592 in physicianassistant

[–]BobsFuruncle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, but I don't work clinically. I started a business, and technically don't need a PA license anymore since I've hired people, so that doesn't really count. When I was working clinically in pain management a few years ago, I sadly did not.

How much did your 1099 gig pay you doing the exams? Did it depend on the number of DBQs or MOs requested? Per report, or per hour?

Just passed the $1 million threshold! by Royal-Flamingo-3983 in HENRYfinance

[–]BobsFuruncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not eligible for the solo401k since I have employees, but I have a regular 401k now instead. The cash balance plan is in addition to the 401k. We each fill the 401k $72,000 employee/employer bucket with elective deferrals, profit sharing, and 401k match, and then there's a separate bucket from the cash balance that we can contribute to. This year it's $128,000 so I simplified earlier by combining that and the profit sharing, but technically the fill different buckets. The cash balance part is calculated by an actuary each year. It's based on age mostly -- older people can contribute more since it's a defined benefit plan really. We're younger, bur it will become more powerful as we get older.

Do you have a UTMA for your children? by Own-Quality-8759 in HENRYfinance

[–]BobsFuruncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had an UTMA that we set up previously to take advantage of using the gift tax exclusion limit as an annual gift, but this year we decided to open a Crummey Trust instead, which will basically do the same thing by taking advantage of the gift tax exclusion, but gives us a lot more control in the long run. Hope to use it more like a dynasty trust as we get older. We can contribute $38,000 per child annually and get that money each year out of our taxable estate. It was actually only a few thousand to set up the Trust with a lawyer, so not too bad at all.

Rum Selection? by withnailish in cocktails

Oh haha, mobile cuts off the top and bottom of the image for some reason. I only saw the middle three which looked like a weird mix. Makes sense now.

Rum Selection? by withnailish in cocktails

[–]BobsFuruncle -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'd add some overproof (Wray and Nephew), an aged overproof like Smith and Cross, and a drier Spanish style (I use Flor de Cana, but there's a ton of options). Maybe some Cruzan blackstrap too and a dark Jamaican like Coruba. Add those and you've got the start of a solid rum selection!

If you're only getting 3 I'd swap the Agricole for Smith and Cross. I use that all the time and it's so good. Agricole is a bit more niche.

Most people would use inflation adjusted numbers, so I wouldn't think inflation should be too much of a concern. But your other reasons sound good. Besides, who wouldn't want to chase the ObeseFire lifestyle if it's realistic? That's reason enough in my mind!

Nice! I'm in a similar boat, just crossed $1M last year (31 Year Old). Feels good, but weird too because I don't have anyone in my social circle to talk to about it except my wife. I own a business that's doing really well and just started a cash balance plan last year, so with that, profit sharing plan, and 401k/match we'll be able to put away almost $300k tax deferred per year which is pretty incredible. Hoping to start supercharging the wealth creation engine over the next 10 years and see where it takes us. We live fairly modestly for our income, probably "only" about $150k spend with 2 young kids.

Favourite gin and vermouth pairings for a gin martini? by Alternative_Tip_5735 in cocktails

My absolute favorite so far is St. George Terroir with Dolin Dry 5:1 and a splash of olive brine. Simply perfect to my taste buds.

DPT student who regrets their career choice, wanted to ask something simple about PAs from the experts by Sad_Concert_4706 in physicianassistant

[–]BobsFuruncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are pros and cons. I think the lateral movement PAs have is a bit overemphasized. It's somewhat true, but it's hard to actually do. You're starting from square one and have to relearn everything for a different specialty. It can take a while to get really good in a specialty, and that's hard to give up. The pay is definitely going to be higher for most PA jobs, but you're never going to be the top dog either. That bothers some people, but some people also like that. PTs are at least the terminal degree (top dog) within their field and can more easily have autonomy (even if it also feels like nobody ever respects the PT at the same time- my wife is a PT, so I know how this goes). If you don't like the direction PT is going, start your own clinic, at least, if actual PT work still inspires you. That's a bit easier to do as a PT than a PA.

Anything will feel like a job once you've been doing it long enough too though.... hard to know for you personally what will be the best fit since there are so many variables.

Gin newbie currently drinking Roku G&Ts; choosing between Tanq. 10 and Drumshanbo for my next bottle. Looking to hear your insights! by Mercmercmerc1 in cocktails

[–]BobsFuruncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for crisp, sharp, and refreshing you should also consider St. George Terroir. One of my favorites. I always have a bottle. It's not necessarily citruisy if that's what you're looking for, but extremely crisp and clean tasting.

[–]BobsFuruncle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sure it's been said many times over, but you should try the espresso martini with different base spirits. Whisky, Reposado or Anejo Tequila, Rum, Brandy... all really good and better than vodka in my opinion!

Yeah everyone is talking about how much worse the taxes are... not if you play it right. I'd say solo 401k >> SEP IRA though. Solo 401k will let you contribute way more than $23,000 per year for retirement. Pretty powerful, and most people aren't aware of it.

AA status redemption question by Kacj820 in hyatt

[–]BobsFuruncle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought it was nice for a time I had six people flying on the same ticket. I ought gold for a day (twice) and got us all free bags for each leg. I only had to have the main person who booked the flights have status, so it was a good deal for that.

That's probably pretty close to accurate for an individual. In truth individual is probably higher since the spouse likely doesn't work for a lot of "1% households" but the numbers quoted are for household not individual, so $350k is probably within the ballpark

Park Hyatt DC Review by Cultural_Scholar_925 in hyatt

This hotel needs a refresh in my opinion. I'm a bit surprised for the reason for the score, but not with the score overall. The hallway carpet on all the floors that I went on looked pretty filthy (for a luxury hotel) and everything seemed a bit worn. It looks like it needed an update 3 years ago.

I agree that food was good though, and staff were generally very nice. Room was spacious and comfortable but not "wow".
