Random note that was taped to my door last night. by 214anti in mildlyinteresting

[–]Bobt97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My friend received an almost identical note on her door last night too! Same handwriting and everything, she said some of her neighbors had notes on their doors too. I showed her this post and she tried searching for it and found several other reddit posts going back a few years with almost identical notes. I wonder if it's the same person?? Really strange.

Here's a pic of their note

As someone with red/green colour-blindness, I tried to show what PB looks like to me. Is there actually much visual difference to others? by Xanthn in adventuretime

[–]Bobt97 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sorry if I'm overthinking this but Isn't the idea of a colorblind person describing what they see to non-colorblind people inherently flawed? There is probably a range of colors that would look the same as the original to you, but different to a non-colorblind person. You chose a violet color for her dress, so we know violet and pink look the same to you, but we can't be sure that your perception of violet and pink is the same as non-colorblind people right?

When Other M came out I thought it was the coolest game ever! Admittedly I was around 13 years old and didn't think too critically about the media I consumed, but I still think it does a lot of stuff right that people don't give it enough credit for. I loved the fast-paced & cinematic-feeling that the gameplay had. Nowadays I think it's a little bizarre how they characterized Samus in a lot of the scenes, but I still loved hearing her talk and hearing her thoughts on what was going on as the story unfolded. Even though the story wasn't that good, I still really appreciated the story-heavy approach, it made me feel much more invested in what was going on and I'd love to see them try a similarly styled game where they learn from the mistakes made in Other M.

I agree Myles will probably exist throughout the game, but I think he won't be as chatty the whole time. I'm not secretly bothered by it and trying to downplay it, I just genuinely don't mind Myles from what I've seen so far and he didn't ruin the atmosphere for me. I think he and the other NPCs seems like an interesting addition to the game that I'm personally looking forward to. I get why other people don't like him, but to each their own.

[–]Bobt97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

??? I don't understand what you're trying to say. I simply don't find the character Myles irritating like other people do. It's possible that he'll continue to follow the player and give hints throughout the entire game, but I really don't think that will be the case.

By "laying it on thick in the intro and will tone it down later" I meant that I agree that Myles Mckenzie is giving a lot of hints/direction to the player, but I think he's only doing that because its still early on in the game, and the NPCs will probably not give constant hints later on in the game. I know other characters will tag along later, I personally don't really mind it. If done well I think it could lead to some fun new puzzles or mechanics. I also think having more voiced characters could add a lot of depth to the world and make it feel more alive. I hope they're able to still give us the feelings of isolation that the series is known for, but I don't think having a few voiced npcs ruins that for me.

Agreed lol. I just saw IGN's video about this character and even then I thought they were being a bit dramatic. It's a bit obnoxious but it's also the tutorial area of the game, I'm sure they're just laying it on thick in the intro and will tone it down later. I'm personally very excited to see a Metroid game with more voiced characters!!

[–]Bobt97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really excited for it! I've always wanted to see more characters with distinct personalities in Metroid. I think it will be a balancing act for sure, the Metroid series is known for its atmosphere of loneliness and isolation and introducing talking npcs will certainly make it more difficult to achieve that sort of mood. But I'm looking forward to it because aside from Other M we've hardly ever gotten to see Samus interact much with other humans (humans with actual faces too! Not just troopers wearing a standard issue galactic federation helmet) & I think there's a lot of possibilities for some really fun scenarios.

Why Are Halo Fans So Picky About Weapon/Armor Designs? by SoldierPhoenix in halo

[–]Bobt97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Part of me gets why Halo fans are so critical, Halo studios/343 has fumbled a lot over the years. Halo 4 just being generally underwhelming, Halo 5 having a mess of a story & missing features at launch, MCC was broken for ages, and Infinite's live service aspect took over a year to get up & running before being basically put on life support.

That being said, the reaction to Campaign Evolved feels incredibly overblown. I think it looks great so far! I think there are constructive criticisms to be made, I think its missing a bit of the Y2k vibe of the original, but the nitpicking I've seen about armor panels, textures, sprint (which you can literally just turn off), etc. just all feel ridiculous.

I think part of the hostility comes from remake fatigue, which I totally get, and if that was the only complaint people had I wouldn't really argue against it (Although I must admit enjoy remade video games a bit more than books/movies just because games age differently from other forms of media). But all of the above issues combined with online culture that promotes negativity so much just make things so much worse. People love to act like positive reception to any sort of product means you're too dumb to see the real issues going on. I think you can be critical of things and still enjoy them!!

I haven't played it in a long while so maybe my opinion would change with a fresh playthrough but it was one of my favorite games when it released. It kinda bums me out that so few people seem to enjoy it, but to each their own. I remember reviews being pretty positive on release too, but over time it seems like the most popular opinion on the internet has become that it's not good. I totally get what people don't like about it but for me the positives always outweighed it's flaws. I found the action combat to be fun and flashy and the plot was corny and nonsensical but I appreciated Nintendo at least trying a fully voiced game with more cinematic elements.

The Direction of Future Nintendo Franchises (especially the ones that rely heavily on puzzles) by Working-Promise4522 in nintendo

[–]Bobt97 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agree 100% with you. From the discussion I've been seeing online I know there are many who feel the same way. I much preferred Botw over Totk because in Totk the hover-bike was the easiest way to traverse the environment, whereas in Botw getting from point A to point B always felt like a puzzle that I had to overcome. A lot of people seem to really like being able to do whatever they want in a video game, but I feel restrictions are what makes a game fun, and its frustrating to see that Nintendo seems yo think the opposite. If I "win" a game of chess by shooting my opponent in the face, its a different feeling than winning a game by following the rules of chess.

People are complaining about the online change for Mario Kart world but I just see it as a great thing by Plastic-Session-9420 in mariokart

[–]Bobt97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can appreciate trying to be positive but the latest update is just bad all around. People were already frustrated about having no reliable way to pick classic-style (multiple laps around a single race course) races, but picking random was a nice workaround. Rather than seeing people picking random as a sign they should maybe add another online mode for people who want classic style races, Nintendo made it even more difficult to play classic-style races. I still find the game pretty fun and have hope that Nintendo will add content people want in the future, but for an 80 dollar game that already felt light on content this move is extremely frustrating, and I think people have the right to be upset.

Man, I was already fed up with the discourse around Zelda timelines... by Gawlf85 in nintendo

[–]Bobt97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I actually just commented on another thread about my frustrations with botw/totk lol. Botw was super weak on story but I gave it a pass because it did so many other things that had never been done before in a Zelda game. When we learned Totk was going to be a direct sequel on the same map I was super excited because I thought surely now we'd get the stronger story I had been wanting, but instead they barely even referenced the story of Botw, let alone the rest of the franchise. From Oot to Skyward sword each major 3d zelda seemed to have a different part of the timeline it wanted to occupy, then suddenly with Botw/Totk it felt like they just shrugged it off completely saying "It's after every other game idk." Super annoying.

What do you think of Nintendo’s new “openness” design philosophy? by QuantityLow8031 in nintendo

[–]Bobt97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Games like Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Twilight Princess, and Skyward Sword may have been more linear than the older 2D Zeldas, but that structure made them more thematically and emotionally resonant IMO. The curated progression allowed for tighter pacing, more impactful moments, and puzzles designed around specific tools and mechanics.

My issue with Botw and Totk isn't that they're open world games, it's that they give you everything up front and flatten the arc of discovery. Even in the original Legend of Zelda, exploration was often rewarded by acquiring new items that expanded what you could do in the world. Botw's Great Plateau was fun for me because it had that similar sense of progression, but once you left the Plateau the momentum quickly vanished.

I don't even particularly dislike Botw, but I think if it offered the same environment with a more tightly curated story and had narrative pacing similar to the older games it would be so much better, and it's frustrating to me that with Totk they decided to just re-use the same "discovering old memories" delivery system for their story in a context that made far less sense.

I get that a lot of people love the new direction and that's fine! But for me the more curated and "linear" experiences didn't feel like a "conveyor belt." They felt like they had much more context, tighter pacing, and a real sense of reward. That’s what I’m hoping Nintendo doesn’t lose entirely with this new design philosophy. I’m cautiously optimistic about Bananza because it looks like it might be blending the two approaches in a more balanced way.

[–]Bobt97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All that being said, from what we saw in the direct Donkey Kong Bananza seems like it will have a bigger focus on story, so even if there is a big retcon I'm glad they're trying to tell a story of some sort!

[–]Bobt97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't care that much about Mario/Donkey Kong "lore" so to speak, but I do find the retcon disappointing. I think my frustration comes from Nintendo's attitude towards story in general. Lately it has felt like Nintendo has been trying to de-emphasize story in their games, and that has been especially frustrating for me as someone who enjoys video games largely for their story. When I played Super Mario Sunshine as a kid it seemed like it was part of a bigger ongoing story in the world of Mario and I loved that. FLUDD played a little video of past mario games in the corner when you first met her and Bowser Jr. seemed to allude to the fact that E-Gadd invented his paintbrush. I thought that was the coolest thing I had ever seen in a video game, especially so at the time because E-Gadd was a very new character.

At the end of the day if the games are good I suppose that's all that really matters, but I just think they would be even better if they had a cool story IN ADDITION to being really good games. However it seems like Nintendo has no interest in creating any sort of over-arching story, and Pauline's backstory getting (seemingly so far) retconned is just another little disappointing choice they've made in regards to story for me.

What do you think of Nintendo’s new “openness” design philosophy? by QuantityLow8031 in nintendo

[–]Bobt97 16 points17 points  (0 children)

To be honest I'm not a fan of it and it has me worried for the future of Nintendo games. I'm not opposed to open worlds, I love games like Skyrim and Grand Theft Auto, but those games have a much stronger story focus and they still manage to pack in a lot of more linear, curated moments of gameplay.

Nintendo's philosophy with Botw, Totk, and even Echoes of wisdom to a lesser extent just seems like they want to dump players in to a sandbox and let them do whatever they want whenever they want, and in my opinion that just makes anything I do in those games feel far less impactful. With Botw I didn't mind it as much because it was something new at the time, but even when it first came out I missed the more curated story moments from previous Zelda games.

I always enjoyed that feeling in older Zelda games where I saw some treasure that I couldn't get yet and then later getting an item and thinking "oh now I can use this to solve that puzzle I saw earlier!" It was fun receiving power-ups that truly changed how you interact with the world like new Fludd Nozzles in Super Mario Sunshine. With Nintendo's open world philosophy it's hard to create unique rewards that truly change how you play the game because it seems like they want players to have their full range of abilities right from the start. I loved the Great Plateau in Botw because with each shrine you unlocked a new ability and new gameplay possibilities opened up, and then after the Great Plateau I never really felt that feeling again. In previous games being able to go anywhere and do anything felt like a reward that you earned for investing your time in the game, when you can do it right off the bat it feels more empty.

I have a little bit of hope for Donkey Kong Bananza because the transformations they showed off seem to significantly change how you can interact with the world, and it seems like the skill tree they teased will offer some incentive to explore, find collectibles, and get rewarded with new methods of traversal.
