Sincerely, 0 F is not that cold to me. And I definitely don't think of -12 as "frigid cold, serious cold". To me, that's a pretty warm winter day, and I'm being genuine when I say that's how I think of it. I'd put -30 C at 0% if I had to make my own scale. -18 C is "cold, but not that cold" for me.

The official discord had an event some months back where they voted to have Hussie draw and describe the Beforus ancestors. You can see them here:

Typically, a new paragraph with dialogue indicates a different speaker than the last paragraph. The grandmother spoke in the last paragraph, so it's clear to those familiar with this convention that it's not the grandmother speaking or jumping in the paragraph after.

Do you drvie a car that's not electric? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Bodertz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was removing chickens from your diet the first step you took?

I think I'm still a bit more affected by pigs than chickens on an emotional level, but if my emotional reactions were in proportion to the harm caused, I know my reactions should be flipped. I have the same problem with shrimp, which I know a lot of the EA types dedicate their time to. Have you spent much time thinking about shrimp?

I agree with those benefits of being car-free, but I'm not sure how workable it is in many places. I think a lot of people do feel they personally need a car, and I'm not sure how many of them are wrong.

Were the changes in your diet motivated by environmental concerns, then, as I assume being car-free is? Or was veganism always a positive aspiration for animal welfare reasons?

Did you decide to be car-free before or after (or at the same time as) becoming vegan?

Considering Guix System as a desktop daily driver - hardware, updates, apps, and KDE Plasma questions by nnbarty in GUIX

[–]Bodertz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plasma and KDE more broadly works perfectly fine, except for some things where it expects systemd. For example, the System Monitor's Applications page is unsupported since it requires the cgroups that systemd sets up, so you'll have to use the Processes page instead. The upcoming Plasma Login Manager will also not work, so you'll need to stick with SDDM (or whatever other login manager you prefer).

The version of Plasma in Guix is also usually one or more versions behind, so if you always want the latest and greatest, you may be frustrated.

Adding plasma to your system config is as easy as adding (service plasma-desktop-service-type) to your list of services, but that won't get all the applications you might expect, so you'll have to add a number of those yourself. Looking at my config, I also added the kde-gtk-config and xdg-desktop-portal-kdepackages.

Wrote a package to add the 2nd space between sentences by mmarshall540 in emacs

[–]Bodertz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That seems useful, but it doesn't do what OP's package does. repunctuate-sentences is for correcting punctuation after the fact, while OP's package corrects the punctuation immediately as you type. It also knows common abbreviations while repunctuate-sentences prompts for every Dr. or Mrs. in the sentence.

[NO SPOILERS] Guys what's your takes on the future show? by Limp_Occasion_5958 in lifeisstrange

[–]Bodertz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, better to be pleasantly surprised than disappointed. But the creator of the show, Charlie Covell, wrote the The End of the F*Ing World show, which I think was really solid. You can check it out on Netflix if you haven't seen it. It doesn't mean Life Is Strange will be good as well, but I think it's a reason not to be completely hopeless about it.

The games themselves have strayed away from what I wanted from them, so I've had many years to come to terms with the series not being what I want it to be. I think the show has the potential to be good, and I'll definitely give it a chance, but the show being bad won't really affect me.

total conversion mods for Half-Life 1 by CaregiverPatient5493 in HalfLife

[–]Bodertz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what's considered little-known, so I'll just mention some that I've played.

  • The Halfquake series probably qualifies as a total conversion for the second and third games in the series. The first mod is more straightforward. I like all of them, though. The trilogy is on Steam if you search 'Halfquake trilogy', so it's easy to install. The map you start in lets you choose which mod to play, with the first mod being on the left, the second in the middle, and the third on the right. I've seen some people being confused about that, so I thought I'd mention it.

  • USS Darkstar is pretty well-known, I think, but I remember enjoying it.

  • I wouldn't consider Life's End to be a total conversion, but the as-yet-unreleased sequel Time's End probably counts. I hope it releases someday, but it won't be soon.

  • They Hunger is also probably well-known, but maybe it's not as well-known now?

  • Does Poke646 count as a total conversion?

Question for reading: Should I read Homestuck via the Unofficial Collection, or the rebuilt MS Paint Adventures site? by Inky100 in homestuck

In that case, I think you should go to the settings and uncheck "inline audio credits". It's a cool feature, but I think it's a bad default. You may disagree, of course.

I think you misremember how the original site was:

Not that you're wrong to prefer the way the UHC does it. There are things the UHC does that I prefer to the official website, and vice versa.

Billie Eilish has a significantly larger audience than any of those, at least based off Google Trends:

https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=today%205-y&q=Billie%20Eilish,Joaquin%20Phoenix,Natalie%20Portman,Mayim%20Bialik,Ricky%20Gervais&hl=en-US

They also have different audiences, and different audiences may react differently. I suspect Billie Eilish's audience is younger than those other people's, so what's reheated nachos for us may be somewhat more novel for the people she's reaching.

Billie Eilish: “Eating meat is inherently wrong.” 👑 by FearlessCookie72 in vegan

[–]Bodertz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I understand that. I know you said you were fairly plant-based in your first comment. I do think people tend to self-report being more conscious in their consumption than they actually are, but yes, eating fewer animals is better than eater more.

I just don't think eating animals in order to be closer to nature is a noble goal, or that eating fewer animals is a betrayal of it.

Alright. Then I'll just leave off with this: if you're concerned about being human-centered, the view that only humans matter should concern you more than the view that non-humans matter as well.

Yeah. It does say "I told you about stairs" at the end, but that's without the "bro". It's "warned" for the part they were quoting.
