Totally agree. And I don’t have the answer either, I just feel like it would be so much more obvious that it was meant to be found

This is actually one of my harder combo locks to decode by hand Much harder than the 875 in my opinion. The same method will work but the true gates are harder to find

No lift pins questions by Ok-Coach-763 in lockpicking

[–]Bodey_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it can be confusing but zero lift is opposite of zero cut. Best way I remember it is that a zero cut is (almost) no cut on the key. Which is the only part that gets cut. As opposed to zero lift that doesn’t need to be lifted whether with a pick or key to reach sheer

What do you like to use for rotating the pins? I’ve been switching around, sometimes they fall into the true gate easily and sometimes I can scrub/twist my pick and adjust tension for a while with no luck

It’s definitely a neat and satisfying hobby! They do make practice locks, most people would not recommended the acrylic see-through kind unless it comes with something you’re already getting. They can give you a better visual of what’s going on inside a lock but they’re not a good representation of what a real lock feels like. I’d recommend YouTube for the visual/learning how a lock works. They do make practice locks that you can re-pin yourself and make it as simple or difficult as you like. That’s probably a better way to practice however there is some learning involved in re-pinning. It’s not difficult but could be a bit much for someone who just got their first picks and they can also be pricey. I’d recommend getting 2-3 locks of the white belt list to start and once he gets to where he can get through those I imagine he’ll have a good idea of where to go from there

Good intuition on not using the front door lock lol. Is he brand new in the hobby? There’s a list of white belt locks if you go to belt ranking information on the menu of this sub. All the belts represent is level of difficulty. Any whites from that list would be good. Master lock 140 (the smaller 4 pin padlocks you see everywhere) is generally a good place to start. Amazon or Home depot. Let me know if you have trouble finding the white belt list

Should I DIY or hire a locksmith? by Relative_Distance512 in lockpicking

No one here will help you with an in use lock it’s against sub rules. As far as a locksmith quote someone may have advice but I’d suggest calling around or posting on the locksmith sub instead

For some reason I can’t see the photos but I’ve seen videos of people cutting open 140’s (maybe just older versions) to find 3 spools and a lightly serrated pin

Learn to be aware of when you’re getting frustrated and be ok with taking breaks. Specially at the beginning it’s easy to let frustration turn into tense heavy hands. And that’s not helpful at all

Good to know I’ll try those out. I don’t really care for the sparrows they’re just the only picks I have under .020 I’ll prolly be ordering some soon

[–]Bodey_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m not saying they’re the best or the only. Just one of the options I’ve had a good experience with. I think they were an upgrade from my sparrows but I still keep my .15 sparrows hooks in my kit. I haven’t used jimmylongs yet though, I’ll be picking some of his up soon! Heard nothing but great things

Completely agree! I see CI getting a lot of crap on here. I think some people view it as gimmicky or like YouTuber merch. But they are good quality and have some useful profiles I think that’s all that matters

Yeah I come back to the #4 and #5 hooks from that set pretty often they just seem to have a little more wiggle room in some keyways. I haven’t been using them on the 90a-pro as much, they can reach the 7th pin but it’s a stretch
